Second hand would you?

I'm going to a friends wedding in June and fancied a new 'posh' dress to wear. I could probably afford to pay up to £120, but it seems a bit daft to pay that much for something I might only wear twice. So I went on ebay and bought an Austin Reed silk dress listed as excellent used condition.

Well it arrived and its gorgeous, fab quality and looks brand new. Best of all it only cost £18.15 including postage! However when I told a friend that it was second hand she was horrified as if I might catch something from it. So what do you think would you wear second hand clothes from someone you don't know?

Not only would I, but my wedding dress was 2nd hand off ebay...£200 and sold on after for £150. Why pay the £1000 price of a new one?

I like second hand, especialy ebay stuff, as I can uaually find exactly (am very fussy) what I want without having to trawl around the shops.

Ask your snotty friend how she manages on holiday as it must be awful having to sleep in a bed that hundreds of people have already slept in.....

Many celebrities wear second hand clothes, especially vintage designs.

Dress agencies are a great source of little worn clothing and are great to take your own stuff to and get them to sell on your behalf.

Yes - some of my favourite things are from Ebay.

I got a beautiful Amanda Wakeley 3 piece suit for work which was brand new, still in the Harvey Nicks bag for £50 which cost about £1000 new.

AKissIsNotAContract · 19/05/2013 18:18

I usually hire outfits for weddings, same thing really.

OneLittleLady · 19/05/2013 18:19

I have no problem buying or wearing second hand. Charity shops steam clean items before they go out onto the shop floor anyway and if I'm in any doubt, I wash them myself. It's just snobby to turn your nose up at second hand items

sue52 · 19/05/2013 18:54

I would. Your friend was very rude to suggest the dress might carry some contagious disease.

CelticPromise · 19/05/2013 19:06

Yes for sure. I bought a smart dress for a wedding last summer in a charity shop. I love it and it was £7. I am a committed bargain hunter and rummager though. Smile

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 19/05/2013 19:09

Do you:

Sleep in hotels?
Sit down in the doctor's waiting room?
Travel on public transport?
Use public loos?
Borrow books from the library?

Your friend is being silly. Enjoy the wedding!

perplexedpirate · 19/05/2013 19:10

Of course! I prefer 'pre-loved' clothes. You can be confident you aren't going to run into anyone dressed the same as you.

Allthingspretty · 19/05/2013 19:12

Why not. Sounds like you have nabbed a great bargain. Well done you

MisForMumNotMaid · 19/05/2013 19:14

Your friends attitude is exactly why you could get the bargain you did.

I prefer buying clothes online as I'm a long way from shops and Ebay is by far the biggest clothes store for choice in every size and style.

BackforGood · 19/05/2013 19:22

Of course, and indeed do all the time.

nkf · 19/05/2013 19:26

I would. That said, I have never bought second hand shoes. Not sure why that feels different. So, I guess I feel like the anti second handers but only around one thing.

heronsfly · 19/05/2013 19:27

I went to a close family members wedding last year in a beautiful Monsoon dress that I bought off ebay for about a fiver, its the nicest dress I've ever had Grin

Ragwort · 19/05/2013 19:28

All the time - I only shop at charity shops Grin.

Khaleese · 19/05/2013 20:08

Yes, nothing wrong with it. I'm wearing a bora dress i picked up for £3. ( new £150.)It's absolutely lovely. Looks like new and i've worn it and washed it many times.

Always buy SH now. I only buy very good stuff though.

Tigerstripes · 19/05/2013 22:59

I love buying second hand off eBay. I was thrilled and told everyone that my river island dress I wore for my birthday cost me a fiver!

Kikithecat · 20/05/2013 09:15

Stoopid friend.

ThePortlyPinUp · 20/05/2013 09:18

I buy almost all my clothes second hand via eBay or Facebook selling pages.

MorrisZapp · 20/05/2013 09:20

You have a friend who thinks that you might catch something from a dress bought on eBay? For real? And you think she might be right?

justasecond · 20/05/2013 10:04

I would and do. Recently got a Goat Library cardi for £20 cost £4.50 to get it dry cleaned, good as new now, but like some others not shoes.

TeaAddict235 · 20/05/2013 11:08

I often buy my best buys from SH shops. I donate also. Ebay is a great platform for those of us who don't particularly like going into stores. Sure, there are loads of people I know who don't like SH stuff or won't go into SH shops, but I have no problem with it. It helps me to stretch my money and I still can look presentable for work or for gatherings. Don't worry about your friend, just keep putting your savings to the side and keep the secret to yourself.

Hopefully · 20/05/2013 11:13

I wear secondhand all the time. Unless you happen to buy a dress from a plaque victim, I fail to see quite what could happen...

Ragwort · 20/05/2013 11:16

I am just going out on a shoppring 'spree' which will involved going to my local town and trawling round eight different charity shops. I wouldn't dream of paying 'full price' for clothing, including shoes Grin !

OwlLady · 20/05/2013 11:20

please tell me what she thinks you will catch from it?
second hand dress syndrome?
silkyitis
ebaypox
cheesles
