Best shampoo for greasy hair

Hello Smile

So I have really thick, wavy to curly hair, which I straighten a couple of times a week and it takes forever. I just don't have the time if I'm being honest, but my hair looks an absolute state if I don't do anything with it.

Up until now, dry shampoo has been really useful, but it's starting to make it even more greasy in the long run.

I just started using loreal elvive and it feel squeaky clean for the first day, but then it's really greasy by the morning, so that's going in the bin.

Can anyone reccommend a shampoo which keeps the grease away for longer?

Thanks

Have you tried going silicone-free? I got some Timotei Naturals shampoo and conditioner for greasy hair, too drying for me but might be worth a go, cheap in Superdrug.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/05/2013 19:22

Ecover washing up liquid. I kid you not.

oreoaddict · 15/05/2013 14:56

Yoni, no I haven't. Isn't the silicone good for frizz? Unfortunately, my hair is quite dry and damaged and whenever I've used anti build up shampoos, which may be the same thing, my hair is just out of control! Do you have similar hair? Just wondered as you said that the timotei one didn't work for you.

Plenty, seriously?! How did you figure that out?Grin Did someone else suggest it? Or were you just desperate? Is it not incredibly drying though?

I just got sent a sample of this. I was sceptical but it's made a massive difference, more thank any shampoo.

I will definately buy it when the sample runs out.

TheRatsTheRats · 15/05/2013 15:28

alberto balsam.... its less than a quid and the only thing that washes the roots out on my mass of hair (I think its thin hairs but there is just so many of them!) The one for greasy hair!

TequilaMockinBird · 15/05/2013 15:30

I have very similar hair and use Naked shampoo and conditioner from Boots. It doesn't stop it getting greasy but I do at least get 2 or 3 days without grease!

It's silicone-free too and actually, my hair is less frizzy!

Lush's Rehab or I Love Juicy

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 15/05/2013 19:39

It was recommended to me by a friend. It doesn't seem to dry my hair out at all, I wash it twice a week and it keeps it shiny - no conditioner. I've been using it for years. It's a lot milder than most washing up liquids though. I wouldn't fancy using Fairy on it.

There's a pic on my profile of when I did the MN haircut - have a look (ignore the split ends end - I hadn't so much as trimmed it in about 6 years)

chocolatespiders · 15/05/2013 19:40

Lush- I love juicy, quite pricey but you dont need a lot

hugoagogo · 15/05/2013 20:17

Lush I love juicy is brilliant.

Recently we have discovered something called 'Monkey brains goop out shampoo' I have only seen it at poundworld and it is (obviously) cheap smells nice and great for greasy hair. Who knew?

chocolatespiders · 15/05/2013 20:23

is the Monkey brains goop out shampoo poundland or pound world we only have poundland. It is on amazon if anyone wants to see what they are looking for!

Vosene.

hugoagogo · 15/05/2013 20:53

Grin That's the stuff I'm pretty sure it's poundworld, but it's worth a look elsewhere I suppose.

I only bought it the first time because dd liked the bottle, now I have to stock up when I go to Leeds.

oreoaddict · 16/05/2013 09:07

white I read about this stuff the other day. So is it not a shampoo? It sounds as though it's something you use after shampooing. It's got quite a hefty price tag, but then I suppose if it works it's worth it. Really hope it works. My hair ideally needs washing every other day, but because it's so thick, it takes about half an hour to dry and then enough 20 minutes to straighten and I don't have that kind of time. If I could just have another couple of days without needing to wash it, this would be a god send!

Sounds like there are a lot of bargains out there too. Will keep my eye out for this monkey stuff Smile

Tequilla, I've never heard of this. Is it's a boots own brand then? Is your hair naturally frizzy and dry? I could probably handle a no silicone shampoo, but I would have thought my hair would get really bushy and dry looking if I didn't use a more moisturisng conditioner

I've never even been into lush tbh. I usually get a headache just walking past it, it smells so strong Grin I might brave it if this stuff works though

Thanks everyone!

The adolescent boys in our house had quite greasy hair, even 24 hours after washing it. They now use cheap, own-brand supermarket shampoo and their hair is fine. The apple one from Sainsburys definitely helps.

Whitershadeofpale · 16/05/2013 09:14

Your hair sounds just like mine. I'm on day 3 today. You use it after you wash your hair like a serum. you can then use any other products you like on top.

oreoaddict · 16/05/2013 09:18

Three it's starting to sound like the cheaper ones are better for greasy hair, probably because they contain less ingredients, which we probably don't need. I remember my mum always used to say that in her day they used bog standard shampoo or even soap and their hair lasted for ages adn looked really healthy. I always used to roll my eyes at her, but starting to think she had a point and maybe we've all been conned a bit.

OP posts:
oreoaddict · 16/05/2013 09:22

White that sounds great! So before using this, would your hair be greasy by day 3? Does it not feel greasy at all now? I have a really bad habit or touching my hair, which I know is really bad, cos it stimulates your hairs natural oils. Do you know if it repels these kind of oils too? Was about to order some, but was wondering if there was anywhere else I could buy it cheaper. Where did you get your free sample from?

I just wanted to say as someone with boring straight hair, the best thing for you might be to find a really good hairdresser who knows how to cut wavy hair and then maybe you can leave your hair to dry naturally while you do other things and just embrace it.

I have short, dryish, straight hair and I still need to wash it every couple of days.

Whitershadeofpale · 16/05/2013 13:15

Usually I'd use dry shampoo on day 2 and wash on day 3. It feels a tad greasy at the roots today but i'm wearing it up and it looks fine. I've not used dry shampoo, I'll wash it tomorrow as I'm going out after work but it would probably be Ok if I batisted it.

I don't know about those oils sorry but i would have thought so. I got my sample with a Space NK order, maybe give them a call, I suppose it's worth a shot.

teacher123 · 16/05/2013 13:49

After using all sorts of expensive shampoos etc I now use the Alberto Balsam green one for greasy hair, it's in a green bottle and was dirt cheap. I think it was £1.80 for the shampoo and conditioner in Tesco. I now can get away with washing my hair every three or sometimes even four days, which was unheard of before.

hangsbyathread · 16/05/2013 14:05

Don't rub too hard when you lather your shampoo - this stimulates sebum glands.
Don't rinse your hair in hot water - tepid is best.
Only condition mid lengths and ends.

I am currently doing an VRQ in hairdressing. My advice would be to look at your hair washing method as well as products.

Hope this helps.

oreoaddict · 16/05/2013 14:54

Hugo, I would love to just embrace my natural curls, but my hair really does look terrible when I leave it. Top part is straightish, some of it's wavy, some of it's curly, some of it's frizzy and straight. It's just not a good look Grin It would have to be a miracle worker to help my hair, but if you know of any let me know!

White, that sounds good. I would be very happy just to get another day or two. I'll try my luck with Space NK. So would you be happy to pay £17 for it then? I guess it depends on how long it lasts.

teacher, thanks. I think I tried that brand before, but probably not for greasy hair. I don't think I was that impressed with it, but that's cos I didn't like the smell. It was a really false and sweet, strawberry I think.

hangs, I actually deliberately don't massage hard at the roots when I'm washing as I've heard this before. I haven't tried washing it out with tepid water, so I'll give that a go, thanks!

Aussie mega shampoo. My hair is mega greasy and I can even use their leave in conditioner

Whitershadeofpale · 16/05/2013 17:09

Yes I would, but I wouldn't have if I hadn't had a sample first. I don't know how big the bottle is as I've never seen one but the tester has lasted 4 washes so far and there's more left.
