Best shampoo for greasy hair

Hello Smile

So I have really thick, wavy to curly hair, which I straighten a couple of times a week and it takes forever. I just don't have the time if I'm being honest, but my hair looks an absolute state if I don't do anything with it.

Up until now, dry shampoo has been really useful, but it's starting to make it even more greasy in the long run.

I just started using loreal elvive and it feel squeaky clean for the first day, but then it's really greasy by the morning, so that's going in the bin.

Can anyone reccommend a shampoo which keeps the grease away for longer?

Thanks

white, I've ordered some, but it better be bloody good! There's a £5 delivery charge! Shock So it works out at £22 for a tiny tube. I guess we'll see. Thanks for the link Smile

Oops hope it works. Let me know how you get on.

FortyFacedFuckers · 16/05/2013 22:03

I have been thinking of buying this hair primer, can you report back OP. Grin

oreoaddict · 17/05/2013 10:07

Ok, so it's finally arrived. It took long enough!

It's a decent size and it smells nice, kind of like grapefruit. It doesn't feel sticky or greasy, but I would have still thought that applying it generously like they suggest, would make it feel a bit grungy..... I guess we'll see.

white just so I'm completely clear, how much do you apply? I know it says generously, but I guess everyone has a different idea of what that is. It sounds like we have similar hair, so presumably the same would work for me. Oh and do you know if I can use a heat protective spray over the top? Before I dry it I mean. I've got quite damaged hair and so I need to use a spray really.

Whitershadeofpale · 22/05/2013 19:36

I use about a 10p size I'm nervy of using too much too. I use heat protector after too.

oreoaddict · 25/05/2013 18:40

Thanks White. I don't think I've used enough tbh. It didn't feel right putting that much on and I didn't really put it near my roots and I think I should have done now.

Ok, so I'll report back. It went on nicely and it didn't feel like I had anything on my hair, so it is weightless, like they say.

I would say that the mid to the ends of my hair feels fresher than normal at this stage. It's been 3 days, but I have had to use a bit of dry shampoo this morning because it was really quite greasy at the roots, so I was quite disappointed because it would normally be day 3 where I'd need to use that. As I said before though, I might not have put on enough. Something else I did notice though, was that I didn't have bed head in the morning. It was very smooth and I didn't really need to brush it. Even after I'd had some.......ahem, adult fun Wink it still looked like I'd just styled it.

Overall, I would probably give it 8 out of 10. I would definitely give it a 10 if next time I use it, I get to day 4 without the grease!

I'd say I'm quite impressed Smile

That's good. I noticed my hair seems to hold its style better too but I thought I might be imagining it. It took me a few goes to get the hang of it as I really thought it would weigh my hair down and make it greaser but it doesn't.

oreoaddict · 27/05/2013 14:21

Ok well on day 4 I woke up and my hair was so greasy, it looked like I'd dipped my head in a chip pan.

I've put a bit more on at the roots this time, so we'll see.

have you thought about brazilian hair straightener? there are thread on MN about it, buy off amazon. I swear it is a miricle for me. Makes my hair all smooth soft shiney and straight no need for the GHDS unless I want a perfect finish for a night out. so glad I found it my hair has never looked so good condition wise. even DH has noticed Shock check it out on amazon the reveiws on there sold it to me... i am now a convert.

oreoaddict · 27/05/2013 18:17

step, actually I was thinking about using it before and I did hear some brilliant reviews. If I'm being honest, the amount of chemicals in it put me off. I didn't like the idea of breathing it in and I know some hairdressers don't use it and use gentler alternatives. How often do you use yours? Isn't it quite complicated to use? I will have another look at some reviews. Thanks

I used it a couple of months ago and it was amazing, my hair was all shiney, straight and smooth. Its easy if you are confident with hair styling ie: able to straighten well. you wash twice with clarifying shampoo supplied. dry your hair or as I did just left it to dry while I did my housework and just finished off with the dryer. Then you apply the gunk, its a bit toxic smelling and can make your eyes water so need a well ventilated room. this is combed through and dried thoroughly. once dry you need to straighten small sections of hair running hot (ghds or similar that go to 230) straighteners over each section up to 7 times. I recommend getting a heat resistant glove (check out amazon, I got one for about £4.00) as it heats your hair and can burn your fingers as you do it as your hair gets very hot. once done you will have lovely straight smooth shiney hair BUT you cannot tie it back or clip it up or WASH it or get it wet at all for 3 full days. if you do you have to dry and straighten again asap. choose a suitable time to do it as you will look like a grease ball by day 3 then you MUST wash it only with shampoo that does not contain sodium chloride so check the small print on your products as this strips the keratin back out and defeats the object. Once done, and tbh it sounds worse than it is, you should have smooth soft and straight lovely hair. There is enough in the pot for two applications on medium length hair (mine is shoulder length bob) oh and get the refill pack rather than the starter pack, the only difference is that the starter pack comes with a comb and clips which you probably won't need or already have. tons of reviews on amazon too.it says it is formaldahyde free but there has got to be some chemical stuff or it probably would not work and it smells quite toxic. But then again so does hair dye, perm solution etc... depends on your stance really. I think I use it once every 3-4 months, probably breathe in a shed load of toxins every day, eat / drink a shed load of toxins of some sort every day so unless someone proves it will shorten my life by x number of years (like smoking would for example) then I am not losing sleep over it hth. afterwards I use sainsburys childrens shampoo in almond cherry (smells yum) and any old conditioner that has no sodium chloride in. never had such lovely hair

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 27/05/2013 18:58

oops all that and I never said... it lasted about 2- 3 months first time would probably have been a bit more but I did it a second time as we are off on hols soon or I would have waited a bit longer.

oreoaddict · 28/05/2013 10:37

Step, wow! Thanks for all that info. Appreciate it Smile

It sounds great and I'm definitely tempted. I get what you're saying about chemicals being everywhere, but then on the other hand, I have a dd who suffers from asthma, so I'd probably have to do it somewhere else. Not sure I'd feel right about using it here. Maybe I'm thinking about something else, but a few years a go when this was first around, exclusive to hairdressers though, there was this woman who tried it and she was really pleased cos yeah, her hair was straight, but she looked like a scarecrow. It really did look like poker straight straw. Almost wig like. That was a while a go and that's obviously not what you have Grin Also, I don't really want absolutely pump water straight hair. I'd like to keep a bit of movement through the ends if I can cos I think it looks more natural and healthy. Does it look really flat when you first do it, cos I really really don't suit flat straight hair. I need a bit of body. How would it go if you were to put a few curls in it? Oh and do you find your hair lasts longer between washes?

Thanks again

Head and shoulders means I can skip a day of washing my name, it lathers well, smells nice (I use the apple one) and is cheap.

SundaySimmons · 28/05/2013 11:11

My mane not my name!

oreoaddict · 28/05/2013 11:30

sunday really? This is what I was using before, but the classic clean one. Would you say the apple one is better?

OP posts:
SundaySimmons · 28/05/2013 11:39

Yes, I prefer the apple scented Head & Shoulders. It does all of the following

Stops dandruff

Cleans hair so I can skip a day of washing, easily.

Leaves hair very shiny.

Doesn't fade my hair colour

Smells divine, not a synthetic scent at all. Smells of fresh apples but not overpowering to interfere with your perfume.

Inexpensive

OnFoot · 28/05/2013 14:00

I alternate dandruff shampoo with ordinary as I don't like using dandruff shampoo all the time as it's quite harsh. I'd agree that the H&S Apple is best for greasy hair - better than their "for greasy hair" one!

I also like Alberto Balsam. I use the pomegranate one. Smells lovely and can usually be bought for £1! These two are now my standard routine and have really improved my atrociously greasy hair and not dried out my scalp.

Morebiscuitsplease · 28/05/2013 19:55

Where do you buy your shampoo Onfoot, my dd aged 8 suffers with greasy hair and dandruff...have to wash every other day. :(

OnFoot · 28/05/2013 20:16

biscuits - it's a pain, isn't it! They are both available pretty much everywhere up here (Yorks) - I usually buy from Sainsburys, Superdrug or Boots. The Alberto is only £1 in Boots and H&S I always buy when it's on special offer as I know I'll use it. I've tried all the dandruff shampoos over the years but for me H&S is the most effective and I only need to use it every 3rd wash to keep flakes at bay.

trinity0097 · 28/05/2013 20:17

My hair is always less greasy when I change my pillowcases often!

oreoaddict · 29/05/2013 10:57

trinity I heard that your hair is less static and isn't as greasy when you use silk pillow cases.

So I'm on day 3 for the second time using the hair primer. My hair is just as greasy tbh as it would have been beforehand. Well it feels as greasy, if not a little greasier, but it doesn't look as greasy if that makes any sense. I am still very impressed with the style though. I don't have a complicated style, just very long and straight(ish) but I've been caught in the rain a couple of times and it's still just like it was when I first washed and styled it. So for me, it's good for making your style last longer, but that's it.

Think I may just have to accept that I need to wash my hair every other day, but I'm glad I've found this stuff anyway.
