Those of you that home dye, do you do the allergy test each time?

Do you?

I never used to, but have recently delayed dyeing so I do. Not sure what changed!!

I have done, but only once. I bought a dye I'd never used before and did a skin test just in case.

I didn't want to end up looking like some of the women with swollen eyes you see in the Daily Mail Blush

If it's something I've used before, I admit I don't bother.

SwedishEdith · 26/04/2013 00:36

No. I thought an allergic reaction would only happen after the first exposure so not really sure that a test would always show anything?? I do try to avoid darker dyes now though

ToothGah · 26/04/2013 00:44

You really should test every time as they can change the ingredients.

But like I say, I don't - but I believe the main risk is with very dark/black dye.

SavoyCabbage · 26/04/2013 00:48

Yes, I do.

bollockstoit · 26/04/2013 00:55

An allergic reaction is unlikely to occur after the first exposure to the allergen, usually on the 2nd or 3rd occasion. But no, I don't bother to test, I know I should though.

hangsbyathread · 26/04/2013 01:08

I am a hairdressing trainee and agree with Tooth - they do change ingredients and the reactions you can have from them can be so severe that its just not worth the risk.

PlumSykes · 26/04/2013 06:57

No, I don't, though I know I should. I always do it when there is someone else at home, though, so I don't die of vanity.

GymBagHighHeels · 26/04/2013 06:58

It can happen anytime

BunnyLebowski · 26/04/2013 06:59

Never.

I didn't think anyone bothered.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 26/04/2013 07:00

I've never done one. Blush

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/04/2013 07:11

No I can barely find to time to colour it without adding to the experience. I have been colouring it constantly (as in every 3 or 4 weeks) for 20 years and hadn't had a bad reaction yet so it can't be that common.

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 26/04/2013 07:13

The fact you haven't had a bad experience yet means nothing, it can happen to anyone at any time.

Yes you should test. Even if the exact same formula.

SwedishEdith · 26/04/2013 19:18

Yes, but the reaction won't show until you actually use it so I'm not clear what the point of the test is

ygritte · 26/04/2013 19:40

Having had an allergic reaction to the patch test of an organic dye at a salon, I always do a home patch test now.
From a tiny spot of dye behind my ear I developed a burning red rash within 24 hours that covered my ear progressing to scaling and weeping. All this was within days before my wedding.
I am so glad that they insisted on a patch test.

Hassled · 26/04/2013 19:41

No I don't and every time I tell myself off for it.

ygritte · 26/04/2013 19:43

I was cheesed off with the salon because my last colour was done over three months previously (with same product). They had protocols to observe etc. and I thought it was unnecessary at the time.

Earthworms · 26/04/2013 19:44

Yes.

Every time.

HoneyDragon · 26/04/2013 19:44

Why are you meant to do it each time with hoe dyes but they don't in salons?

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 26/04/2013 19:45

Swedish - how do you mean? If you get any itching on the patch test that is better than a full pack surely?

Ygritte - lucky they stood their ground, could have been awful.

I think people are very blasé about this.

NorbertDentressangle · 26/04/2013 19:46

I've never done a test and have dyed my hair dozens of times over the years, first time was 20+ years ago as a teenager so ingredients would've changed massively over that time.

SwishSwoshSwoosh · 26/04/2013 19:46

Honey - salons should do it, I wouldn't trust a salon that didn't tbh.

Yama · 26/04/2013 19:46

I have never done it - 24 years of administering the home kit.

blibblibs · 26/04/2013 19:48

Never Blush

And I use a dark colour and whatever dye is on offer Blush

FannyFifer · 26/04/2013 19:48

Never allergy tested in my life.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 26/04/2013 19:50

I've never done it, always been confused- so you mix the dye up, apply for the patch test, then leave the mixture for 24 hrs in the bottle and use the rest of it next day (assuming all ok )? I thought you were only meant to keep the mixture for a few hours? Someone cleverer than me pls explain!
