Blondes. when did you go grey?

mumnosbest · 14/04/2013 01:22

I'm in my mid thirties and so far don't see any grey. Being blonde I guess it will be less noticeable. I guessed i'd gradually get lighter but actually i'm noticing my hair is looking darker/duller. Is it the start of going grey?
Not worried, just curious. All my friends and siblings are dark haired so just wondered how blondes change to grey.
Sorry if my late night ponderings seem a bit silly :)

When I was 20 Sad I hate it. I dye my hair every 6 weeks now but I do find that my hair seems a lot duller when it's nearing time to get done. I'm virtually white above my ears now. It makes me very [angry ]

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/04/2013 06:40

Late 30's but its really ramped up in the last 6 months (am 40).

I get regular hi-lights to cover it and I don't think its that noticeable really to others.

izzybobsmum · 14/04/2013 06:46

I'm 40 in a few weeks, and no grey yet, although I have a couple of random white, wiry hairs in my eyebrows!!

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/04/2013 06:53

I thought I was going blonder until close scrutiny revealed the hair was grey. However my mother went grey in her early 20's so I've done well to get so far I guess.

I don't like it though as the texture of the grey hairs is not terribly nice.

Bearandcub · 14/04/2013 06:59

Shortly after giving birth...

MrGeresHamster · 14/04/2013 07:03

I got my first grey hair late teens, now mid 30's and have a big patch at the front.

Blonde hair reflects light differently to dark hair colours and I find that the greys are different too. What you mention about duller colour could be grey coming through or it could be something else.

Luckily as blondes we don't show the grey as much but I still dye my hair.

whataboutbob · 14/04/2013 11:14

Can't really remember. I m 46 and maybe in deep denial but don t want to get on the blonde dyeing treadmill. I saw a good friend yesterday for 1 st time in 2 years, she has similar complexion and I was pleased. To see she s not dyeing either. I think it has diminishing returns, eventually the hair gets to dry and straw like.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 14/04/2013 12:00

Probably mid thirties and I'm 41 now. I have a streak at my temple which is all white, then the top of my head is about 30% grey and less underneath. I have a mixture of caramel and blonde tones put through my hair and as I get more grey I'll increase the amount of light blonde I have put in so that hopefully, I'll end up Helen Mirrenesque. Well. that's the plan!

My greys (more white tbh) were coarse initially but now they're the same texture as my other hair.

dontyouwantmebaby · 14/04/2013 12:13

first noticed a few grey hairs where the lightest blonde ones are (at side of my temples) when I was about 38 or 39. Am 44 now and its really much more noticeable throughout the rest of my hair, texture is same as tho.

Hate the feeling of hair having 'less bounce' than it used to. I still try to cover greys up with various honey & light coloured highlights as it looks better when I put it up.

Friends 6yo asked me 'why do you have grey hair?' Er ...because 'I'm OLD' I answered Grin

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 14/04/2013 12:26

I'm 35 and have no grey hairs yet
in fact I appear to be getting darker with every passing year
at this rate I'll look like morticia adams by the time I'm getting my pension

polyhymnia · 14/04/2013 15:33

Didn't notice any grey hairs until my early 40s.

catacats · 14/04/2013 15:47

I'm 45 and still no grey! Although like you I did find my hair went duller as I hit my mid thirties at the time I put it down to a lot of stress I had gone through in the year preceding. Shortly after I had a few highlights added which made me feel more like myself again (smile) and here we are ten years later and still no grey at all on saying that my Dad is 73 and still only has a few grey hairs through his hair.

MoaningYoniWhingesAgain · 14/04/2013 15:49

About 34 ish I noticed some. But then when I had a good look, I actually had quite a bit of grey that I just hadn't noticed with having blonde hair Blush

I still mostly just don't look Grin especially at the 'tache area

secretscwirrels · 14/04/2013 15:54

I am 55.
I had light blonde hair as a child which got darker as I got older. I started having blonde highlights to lighten up in my 20s. I suppose I spotted the odd grey hairs from late 40s but not obvious.
However I realised last year that I hadn't had my hair coloured for months and yet it still looked lighter. it's the grey really creeping in.
I'm not sure what to do with it now. It looks fine so far but I refuse to have a full head of grey as it really looks ageing but I don't fancy full head colour and all the root growth that goes with it.

usualsuspect · 14/04/2013 15:56

In my 40s.

I just leave them to it now. Grin

brdgrl · 14/04/2013 15:57

I have just been thinking about this. I have always been a pale blond, and since DD was born (39) my hair is rapidly turing grey. It doesn't really show that much I think - in fact, I was largely unaware of it myself until my mother helpfully pointed it out. And then my DH confirmed it.

I look much younger than my age otherwise, and always have, so I don't like the idea of being aged by my hair alone. But I also hate the idea of dying it - both the cost, and the fact that it took me many many years to learn to love my curly hair as it was - after reaching self-acceptance about that, I'm not ready to start changing its colour. I think.

I wish I had the nerve to post a photo and canvass opinions (to dye or not).

secretscwirrels · 14/04/2013 16:09

So what colour do greying blondes choose to dye?

ToastedTeacakes · 14/04/2013 16:16

I've been very pale to golden blonde all my life (bright white as a kid), but since late 30's it is coming in a nit more ash coloured. Not grey, but a prelude maybe. Most of my dad's family were whitish blonde and many of them went that lovely white-grey, but I bet I won't!

ToastedTeacakes · 14/04/2013 16:17

haha, i meant 'bit' not 'nit'.
not a freudian slip i promise:)

mumnosbest · 17/04/2013 23:37

Shock at cats dad being 73 and hardly grey!
Thanks for all your replies. I think 3 dcs and dh could explain my recent dullness :)
I also get odd white eyebrows and wirey hairs. Another sign of aging i guess. Not to worry, i'm sure we'll all go grey more gracefully than our brunette friends Grin

skandi1 · 17/04/2013 23:42

No grey until after first DC at 36. But the last couple of years before that my hair got darker/duller somehow as if the colour was about to change and then after DD it started to go grey and in the last year it's really ramped up (40 soon). Not too worried about it. I have some highlights from hairdresser to gloss
Over the grey and that's it. It's the least worst (if you can say that!) part of the ageing process!!! The rest is much worse.

mumnosbest · 17/04/2013 23:47

I'm dreading droopy eyelids more :) they run on one side of the family and i know i'm gettinv them.

OP posts:
nipersvest · 17/04/2013 23:54

i think late 30's, not totally sure as i dye it. have often thought about stopping and leaving it to go back to the natural colour but i suspect the colour i remember being, is not what i am now. was naturally a dark ash blonde.

Shodan · 17/04/2013 23:59

Not a single one yet (as confirmed by a teenage friend of mine just yesterday Grin ) and I'm 44. None in places teenage friends can't see, either. Am very lucky, I think.

But then my Dad has the same colour hair and didn't start to go grey until his 70s. Even now, at 78, he's still more blond than grey.

mumnosbest · 18/04/2013 00:10

78! Hope for us yet :)
