I'd like to have my daughter's ears pierced between 6 and 9 months of age. Could anyone recommend where to go in Cental London ?

Disgusting.

DuttyWine · 10/04/2013 10:13

Missbopeep I have just text my mil who is from the 'uncivilised' st kitts and asked her opinion, she said its cruel and people should wait until children are older. Any comeback?

HappyJoyful · 10/04/2013 10:16

Do we actually have any facts on how long this 'pain' that is talked about is inflicted on the baby for? Surely it only lasts seconds?

How many of us begged our parents to get our ears pierced? I wasn't allowed to until I was 13 and now have closed up holes. Am sure when the baby grows into a child / teenager and wishes to take them out then they can do so and the hole will close probably easier and less visible than mine are?

laptopwieldingharpy · 10/04/2013 10:18

blah blah blah...usual culturally biased nonsense as quietlysuggest eloquently puts.

That said, when you do get her ears pieced OP, never ever take the earrings off? 'tis so sweet and tender at that age that the piercings will seal off within a matter of days if you do!

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 10/04/2013 10:31

Imo it looks tacky. Imo wait until the child can make an informed decision and take some responsibility for care themselves. And it doesn't look tacky. Imo at least 10.

Enough Imos for ya?

Fuckity · 10/04/2013 10:39

Does it matter how long the pain lasts? If I hand you a piercing gun and a newborn baby, would you shoot sharp metal through its flesh?

ExcuseTypos · 10/04/2013 10:41

Gosh, what a lot of hysterical nonsense.

Piercing a baby's ears is done all over rather world. Why does MN have to get so frothy about it. Makes people look very parochial.

Rosesandlemons · 10/04/2013 10:44

I think it looks very cheap. I regret getting my ears pierced as a teenager (my choice) because the holes never close up. I really can't work out the benefits of having a baby's ear pierced? It looks very dated and tacky

Absy · 10/04/2013 11:10

Ooh! It's been a while since one of these. I have MN Ear Piercing Thread Bingo!

Tacky - check
Chavvy - check
Mentions of culture/religion - check
"I don't care about culture/religious practices" - check
Completely unfair comparison to FGM - check
Comparison to circumcision - check
Comparison to innoculations - check

What do I win?

It is a common thing in many cultures and to criticise it is just plain weird.

Can we drop the 'other cultures' defence?
other cultures stone women, chop hands off for theft, don't allow women to drive, insist they cover their entire bodies and faces when out have female circumcison and more.

I like to think that we are not part of cultures who do things like that.

And belonging to a culture doesn't mean you follow that behaviour slavishly.

ExitPursuedByABear · 10/04/2013 11:30

Mmmmm Sparkly babies

Absy · 10/04/2013 12:14

Though, credit where credit's due "roll the baby in glitter" is amusing and new

TheBookofRuth · 10/04/2013 12:52

Thank you very much, I'm here all week.

JazzDalek · 10/04/2013 13:07

But what is the gain?

"The risks are small" - even a small risk is too much where there is no gain
"It only hurts for a second" - debatable, and again, a second is too long where there is no gain

Baffled.

Piemother · 10/04/2013 13:07

Ambernectarine - great post I agree.

Suggesting casual racism is the most stinking bullshit I have heard in a while.
I would like to see piercing babies made illegal and rightly so.

ExitPursuedByABear · 10/04/2013 13:11

Parochial Shock

AmberNectarine · 10/04/2013 13:14

You know what? I think I'm happy to be narrow-minded when it comes to making holes in babies... I'm old-fashioned like that.

FlowersBlown · 10/04/2013 13:15

It's not racist to say that you don't agree with piercing babies' ears. However, some of the comments have been casually racist, calling countries where it is common uncivilised or backwards. It's not bullshit to point that out.

VelvetSpoon · 10/04/2013 13:15

Parochial is the perfect word to sum up some attitudes on this thread. It's all terribly daily mail reading middle england-er faux handwringing nonsense.

noddyholder · 10/04/2013 13:18

Couldn't agree more velvet.

AmberNectarine · 10/04/2013 13:19

Oh bollocks it is, it is people saying the don't agree with pointlessly harming an infant in the name of 'beauty'. That is a perfectly normal, and dare I say, sensible attitude to have.

I don't agree with sweeping generalisations branding entire nations uncivilised, but as a custom it is bordering on revolting.
