Do you think there's an age (not size) beyond which a woman should not wear a bikini?

yes. and i think that's 40. i'm 35, wear a size 10, and wouldn't wear one. it just doesn't seem apropos to me anymore.

WigWamBam · 08/05/2006 12:03

Not if she feels comfortable with it, no. It's personal preference and no skin off anyone else's nose, imo.

starlover · 08/05/2006 12:03

i think it depends how good you look!

i mean, i don't much like seeing a load of wrinkly, saggy old flesh regardless of size!

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2006 12:03

I would wear one if I had the body for it, I would not care how old I was. I have seen older women looking great in bikinis.

DumbledoresGirl · 08/05/2006 12:03

Theoretically, no, a woman should feel free to wear whatever she likes, but in reality I suppose there must be. I am in my 40s and have a good figure but I wouldn't wear a skimpy bikini anymore.

Feistybird · 08/05/2006 12:04

bugger, expat I just knew someone would say 40...

FairyMum · 08/05/2006 12:04

No. I think people can wear whatever they like.

maltesers · 08/05/2006 12:07

Depends where you are and what you look like. If on deserted beach somewhere who cares what you look like . I am 47 and slim so may not wear one on Bournmouth beach but might somewhere more private. Surely there cant be a set age? Mind you if my mother wore one at 70+ might think it a bit too much !

Ledodgyherring · 08/05/2006 12:07

It depends how you look Cindy crawford is 41 and i'm sure she looks great in a bikini.

Feistybird · 08/05/2006 12:10

I think Cindy Crawford and I have similar earlobes, but that's where the similarity starts and ends.

feistybird, don't read too much into Expat's mention of 40. She said herself she is 35 and donesn't everyone thing 5 years older than they are is old? She might think differently when she is 40, especially if she still has her lovely figure!

flamesparrow · 08/05/2006 12:16

Nope - if you feel happy in it, then wear it.

Bodies are bodies are bodies.

Actually, I think people who are not trying to look 'sexy' look better with nothing on at all than in a bikini - on the beaches in Norfolk and France where no-one wears cloths at all, it ceases to mater what age or how pregnant or what size someone is.

I am - shock-horror - over the age some of you consider to be too old for a bikini, but I don't want to get out of the sea and have a soggy wet swimsuit plastered to my stomach until I dry off, and I don't care what you think, so NERRRR!

expatinscotland · 08/05/2006 12:24

I never wrote that 40 is old. I don't consider it old at all. I don't consider my 65-year-old mother old. I just think there comes a point when some things aren't as flattering to wear. I mean, Donatella Versace wears a bikini and she's 50. But to me, it doesn't look very good even though she is fit.

Just my 2p.

Obviously peeps will wear what they want.

schneebly · 08/05/2006 12:26

If that person is happy and confident enough to wear one then good for them - doesn't bother me one bit.

Chandra · 08/05/2006 12:27

I think is not age related but skin/size related. Yes, you can wear anything you like as long as you are comfortable with your choice, but how comfortable can one be once other people in the place start to comment/joke about it?

Feistybird · 08/05/2006 12:44

Ahhhh Blu - the first other to admit being over 40 and wearing a bikini.

I have not worn one I should add, for years. It's not an 'itsy bitsy' bikini (and def not polka dot), and have just bought both the bikini top (when out and about anonymously) and the tankini (blimey what a crap name)for when I'm not.

Don't have lots of saggy flesh but do need to firm up a bit - anyway, I just returned the crips to the cupboard and ate a carrot instead. So at this rate even if I don't firm up, I'll at least be healthier Grin

I blame DP - he persuaded me.

yes, wear bikini .. and i say that coz i will be wearing them on my next hols in a few weeks time :)
I haven't got a great body, but i feel lucky not to have stretchmarks .. i just don't like a full swimming costume .. i want to get a good all over tan!

lazycow · 08/05/2006 12:51

Anyway aren't one pieces the thing this season darling?

Blu · 08/05/2006 12:53

Feistybird: I won't be posting the pics in members profiles, tho' Grin

I raise an eyebrow when I see lithe 20-somethings wearing a bikini and heels in the street in some hot resort, or even going to the beach bar without a sarong - that just makes it look like 'innappropriate dress' to me, whatever the body is like. But for being on sand and enjoying water, I only care about how comfortable I feel.

DumbledoresGirl · 08/05/2006 13:10

Apologies Expat, I see your post said 40 was the age beyond which a woman should not wear a bikini. It was sad ageing 41 year old me who interpreted that as saying 40 was old! Grin

Marne · 08/05/2006 13:15

I think people should wear what they want, im 24 and i would'nt wear one as i hate my body. Its up to them if they want to show off they're flabby, saggy bits, why should it bother anyone else?

prettybird · 08/05/2006 13:18

I'm with Blu and mythumbelinas - and I'm 45.

I wear one becasue I want to get a decent tan (why should my tummy stay white?) and because I don't care what other people think. Plus I also quite aften like to sunbathe topless.

I also don't care what other people think - it's none of thier business what I choose to wear.

As it happens, my dh (and others) still thinks I have a good figure. He says I still have boobs that many 20 year olds would die for Wink And that's even after breast feeding for a year! Grin. I have to admit my boobs are still one of my best features - not quite as perky as they were in my 20s (when you don't appreciate the fact quite so much), but still pretty damn good. :)

Now my tummy, on the other hand..... :( (Actually, it's not that bad)

However I prefer not to go to a swimming pool in this country in a bikini - a costume is much more comfortable for serious swimming.
