Where do fat people buy nice clothes?

I'm afraid both Evans and Ann Harvey are no nos for me. Everyones tastes differ but 'specialist' plus size labels are almost all to be avoided IMO - too cheap looking or too frumpy.

Evans specialises in flammable tat cut to fit pillar boxes. I also question their sizing and if you have an arse (like me) then you'll wear up to 5 sizes more than normal - although I suppose it keeps their market captive by thinking they're too big to go elsewhere. Eg I usually wear an 18 - I bought some Evans knickers in 28-30 for pregnancy and they were tight around my thighs -wtf?

For nice stuff I prefer mainline shops and the odd treat or two from Anna scholz who uses amazing fabrics.

Asos curve I think must be targeted towards teens as it's so unflattering. Always bare arms and baby dolls in nylon - it's as though mama cass died in vein.

As someone who has been and loved being an 8/10 being over 12 1/2 stone and a top end 14 puts me off buying clothes at all. As I'm only 5'3" and have no waist or shape ( apart from a nice cleavage ) I tend to go for jersey dresses from Brora, Pepperberry and Autograph with V necks and a push up bra to give the distraction factor. I cover up the distraction factor with a scarf for work. If I was a better shaped fatty with a waist and womanly hips, rather than a blob I'd be buing more than is needed to coever my decency.

Right on There is some rubbish in there. I also hate anything with Betty Boop or an anchor on it.

I tend to go to ebay for clothes and get the old thing in New Look or Sainsbos. Evans were ok for a while but the stuff they have just now is awful.

I hate hate hate Simply Be. The sizes are messed up and apart from the small Joe Browns range they carry, everything else is vile. I have never seen so many sequins and sparkles as I did when I went in Simply Be around xmas time. Yes, because every larger lady wants to look like a fucking disco ball on legs.

I buy almost all my dresses from Boden - by trial and error - ie, trying and sending back - every season till I find ones that suit me. Those I eventually track down often seem to get compliments from friends, etc.

Also have lots of their tunics/long tops (not the ones with garish prints!!). And some of their knitwear.

Don't find their trousers any good on me as too baggy in the legs - mine are long and quite slim.

I'm tall as well as large, and hourglass shaped, so those have to be factored in too. Having the measurements of the clothes and the reviews on their site are both very useful for that purpose - though I still end up sending back more than I keep!

I do shop at fashion world and related sites, but it's not always easy to find nice things, that's true. You know what I hate? I hate the fact that they don't seem to realise that perhaps strappy tops and tops that end at your waist aren't really the best look for those of us who have more in common with the michelin man than with twiggy

I don't WANT straps or split or really short sleeves that display my arm flab. I want 3/4 length sleeves at least.

I don't WANT clingy fabric.

I don't WANT tops that give me the Vogon look. Make them a bit longer, ffs!

And pants. Oh, pants. Understand the body of the larger woman. Please.

Having a large chest does not mean I actually want to display it to the world. But then I don't want a crew neckline with pockets on the boobs either. Pockets on the boobs? Oh lovely, can you place the button on my nipple too?

I buy lots of tops and jumpers from La Redoute. I am an 18 but I always buy tops a couple of sizes bigger. They give the length in the desription so you can work out which ones will cover you. I send a lot back but the tops and jumpers I have got are usually reasonable quality and people have often asked where I got them. I wait until I have a good offer code or there is a sale. They have lots of tat as well but it's easy and free to send back. Never got a good pair of trousers from there though.

I think trousers are the most difficult of all. I get my jeans from NYDJ and my 'smart' trousers from Marina Rinaldi - though even theirs are often too baggy.

kalidanger Nice... I like the way the top of your bra would show and the heart would disappear under a bosem or if you've a larger tummy, perhaps its point would disappear into your navel?

I always thought the Beth Ditto range was spectacularly bad - I mean that had effort put in to it to be so bad!

I buy all over the place. Be prepared to try on or return if mail order. With mail order I will order LOTS (on credit card) knowing I will return lots of it before card needs to be paid.

DP - dresses (much to my surprise as I'm not a huge fan of Polyester Perkins)
Primark - stretchy tops & vests
Debenhams - jeans and dresses
Wrap - tops
M&S - Maralyn jeans
Damsel in a Dress- got lovely dress on sale
ASOS - haven't brought here for a while but the CURVE range is good.
BonPrix - summer dresses. Very much a case of selective shopping here but they are cheap and IME good quality.
