Can anyone explain the difference between cool, clear, vivid and deep winter colouring please?

Some of those might be the same thing, so apologies :)

Ooh! I'd like to know this too please.

Svanhvitr · 28/02/2013 16:21

It's confusing isn't it Queef? I've been looking on the internet for colour advice/inspiration and these terms are always used. I'm a HoC winter but she didn't give me any info about what kind of winter I am (maybe HoC don't divide up the seasons in this way?), and I know that not all the colours in my palette work well for me.

I'll probably just confuse you even more but I had my colours done with color me beautiful and I'm deep, cool, clear.

Deep because I have dark hair and dark eyes and this is the dominant aspect of my coloring. then I'm also cool because I suit cool colours as opposed to warm ones. I'm also clear because I suit Sharp contrasting colours as opposed to faded ones. All the muted and melange shades are not good on me.

No idea what vivid is though but sounds the same as clear.

Does this help?

Svanhvitr · 28/02/2013 16:30

I think that helps a bit tuga...so you are deep, cool and clear all at once - I assumed you were either one or the other. My colouring sounds the same as yours - muted and melange shades, as well as small fussy prints make me look very dull. I'm very pale and cool toned in my skin, so really bright, neon colours can drain me.

LaCerbiatta · 28/02/2013 16:40

I'm not too pale, or at least not a pinkish pale, Ive got a. light olive skin tone.

Yes, for colour me beautiful you're a combination of three aspects, but there's an order or hierarchy. Some people would be a cool first (people with grey hair for ex) whereas others would be a clear - Monica from friends is a good example with the very dark hair, pale skin and blue eyes.

Svanhvitr · 28/02/2013 17:29

OK, that makes sense, I have no idea what my hierarchy would be then. I'm very white with slight pink undertones. My hairs not as dark as Monica's, more a medium-dark ash brown, with dark brown eyes.

Travel, sorry for my very slow reply, and thanks for yours. I am away at the moment and will be all week, so can't check my HoC workbook, but will be back and will let you know my double-star colours, just in case you can enlighten me further :)

A friend had her colours done at the same time as me and was told she was a Blue Autumn. She is incredibly confused by it - seems like Autumns are a bit more varied and complicated than Winters?

Hello fellow winters! I had my colours done at house of colour last week and I came out as a 'burnished winter'. No idea what this means, I think HoC is the only system that uses this terminology! Basically, like amber, I can wear mole really well, best colours are magenta, cherry red, emerald green, charcoal.
I am having a major identity crisis following the consultation: my hair is highlighted Jennifer Aniston style and I live in taupe blusher and lip gloss. The consultant told me to ditch my old 'nude' lipsticks and wear a bright, dark pink or bright red lipstick only. Both lipsticks (and the blusher I bought look incredible on me but I am feeling like a painted lady wearing red lipstick for the school run and very self conscious. I tried dabbing the lipsticks instead of applying straight from tube, but they are both very bold. In an 80s kind of way. Is anyone else having makeup issues?

AmberNectarine · 04/03/2013 19:02

I felt like this when I first had it done. Now I wear my lipstick to work every day, and I feel pale and uninteresting without it. It actually looks quite natural on my face, so not as bold or alarming as you initially feel it is at all. We're naturally resistant to change, but it will come over time as you start to see the improvement. I used to be a great wearer of orange, but I see now it does me no favours. So I have an orange watch and an orange handbag. You will adapt (if you want to!) over time, it doesn't have to be overnight!

Totally indentify with the lippie angst, was diagnosed as Paintbox Spring and told to wear super bright coral/red or pink lipstick. I felt like Barbara Cartland at first. Now I realise it makes my eyes look amazing. Top tip is to buy lip gloss in your wow colours as it feels a bit less in your face than proper lippie and breaks you in gently.

Standingonlego · 04/03/2013 20:43

Another HoC winter here...but I had mine done ages ago so all this burnished type talk has me very confused!

My top colours were bright - turquoise, emerald green (but nothing with a hint of yellow!). I was scared witless by the red lippy but it does work on me so hang in there - agree with poster who said try lip gloss as a starter option!!!

Do you think it is worth going again for a review? Had 2 kids since I had it done. I did the style thing too - soft sharp rectangle - classic gamine. Whatever that meant..

Maraki · 04/03/2013 21:04

Kids do change us in many ways but I wouldn't have thought that they change the colour of our skin and eyes ;-) so no, I don't think that you need to do it again. Not sure about style though ad our bodies do change (I haven't done the HoC style but I can see that my mummy tummy has transformed me from an hourglass to a bit of an apple).

Thanks for the lipgloss suggestions, reassuring to know that others felt the same. I shall perservere, even though I am getting strange looks from people who see me every day.

With lipsticks, I wear the strong ones without blusher. You may find that wearing your best colours mean you need to use less blusher anyway - I used to pile it on to compensate for looking crap in my worst colours.

Maraki · 05/03/2013 14:47

OK, so I am wearing my bright bold magenta lipstick today in the sun for the school run. I shall keep on thinking about the sofa story TravellinColour to feel less conscious

Just wanted to share with fellow winters that I bought two lovely jumpers in my 'double star' colours.
I got the bright blue and the red and they both look fabulous on. Only a tenner each with free delivery to my local simply food M&S store.

I'm back :) So, Travelin, my double stars at 100% are Grey (that's the medium grey, not light or charcoal), Indigo, Scarlet, Light Emerald and Pine Green. Does that say I'm a particular kind of Winter?

Thanks v much for the blue autumn advice, have passed it on to my friend. And youre so right about your best colours looking more expensive - I've had so many compliments on a £15 H&M pine green jumper I bought, even from my dour 60 yr old male boss!

Svanhvitr · 10/03/2013 18:58

Oh and thanks for the jumper link Maraki, I'm tempted :) I'm scared of my lipsticks too, I've never really worn lipstick so am easing myself in with things like the Clinique chubby sticks and lip stains in my colour. I left my HoC consultation with proper deep red on and was told I looked like Anne Hathaway (!), but I really didnt feel myself in it so haven't tried it again. Oh yeah and DH thou it made me look like the Joker!!!

No I'm dark haired :) I get a star at 100% on magenta and double star at 75 so yes that's good on me too, also on lagoon blue. Only get two ticks at 50 for Chinese blue. Electric blue is one of my best ones too. I have nothing in these colours, maybe time to go shopping! Thanks again Travelin.
