Several people recommended having a lesson with Bare Minerals (concession in House of Fraser) and buying their kit for £50, which I did and was reasonably happy with. The kit is only for skin (ie foundation and bronzer/blusher) so you still need to work out what to do with your eyes and lips. I had eyelash extensions and used Vaseline for my lips!

ohfunnyhoneyface · 27/01/2013 08:25

Are you having your hairdresser do your hair? Have you asked her if she'll do both?

forgottenpassword · 27/01/2013 08:57

I did mine myself not least because I am quite fair and a lot of make up makes me look like a clown so didn't trust anyone else. Went into department stores for a number of make overs to get an idea of colours and technique then bought my own stuff. A handy tip (from a contact in the make up world) is that a lot of the cheaper brands are the same as the posher ones but with a different smell. Bourgeois (more mid ranging than cheap) and Maybelline are recommended less expensive brands. Mind you I suspect you could end up spending £50 anyway but at least you could use it again.

CharlieBoo · 27/01/2013 09:49

I'm in the same boat, I get married at the end of may and have decided to do my own make up... I'm going to go to the concessions and get some make overs and an spending a bit on new make up to try out. I was a bridesmaid a few years ago and the bride has someone do her make up and hated it, I hated mine too and that has put me off having it done again by a professional.

Curtsey · 27/01/2013 09:57

Me too getting married end of May, Charlie :) will do my own maquillage for sure, I just don't trust people to not give me an orange mask.

Am going to google some bridal look for inspiration!

QuietNinjaTardis · 27/01/2013 10:02

If you're doing your own then use a primer so it all sticks. I didn't do my own but kinda wish I had as I could have done it better than she did though it did look ok. I did my mascara and used my own mascara though as hated the thought of having mascara that had been used by someone else on my eyes. Ick.

littlemissengaged · 27/01/2013 10:47

im going to my normal hairdresser but they don't do beauty.

im not sure whether to do my own now as £45 would get me some nice make up!

If you pay £45 to get your wedding make up done, without a trial first, there's a pretty good chance you won't like your make up! That would be like getting a junior in a salon to cut your hair for your wedding. Anyone with the skills, experience and expertise to give you a beautiful wedding make up that you will be proud to show off for years to come in your wedding photos will firstly have a trial with you where they find out about your personal taste and tailor the make up to your personal style, use the correct colours to flatter you and charge not less than £150.

Persuasion · 27/01/2013 11:12

Same as others, I did my own, but first went to bobbi brown counter for a makeover/lesson. They do very neutral makeup which is what I wanted for my wedding, to look like 'me' but prettier! Think it cost £30 which you could then reclaim on makeup. I bought some from them, and some from cheaper brands but in the same colours, worked really well.

Sugarbeach · 27/01/2013 11:40

I went to the Estée Lauder counter and booked in for a bridal make up consultation...I thought their double wear foundation was brilliant and lasted well, then practiced and practiced at home and did my own make up on the day.

littlemissengaged · 27/01/2013 11:52

how long did it take you to do? if i get it done professionally it will be at 8am as hairs 9-10 and leaving at 11.15 to get to the venue where ill have an hour to put my dress on

OP posts:
Havingkittens · 27/01/2013 12:08

There won't be any counters open at that time of the morning. If someone comes to you then I'd allow an hour. That's the time I usually give but it generally takes less. It's best to be generous to allow for interruptions and a nice calm environment.

Milliways · 27/01/2013 12:13

DD got married in December. The price of a trial & actual thing shocked her, so she got some Bare Minerals in Debenhams and used her own stuff. She looked gorgeous, everyone commented on the "understated" make-up, even the photographer asked who did it as she had seen so many upset brides who have been "over-done". SHe put the money saved to new ear-rings for the day.

littlemissengaged · 27/01/2013 13:21

i might have a look at doing it myself then

I think http://christanburran.com/about_bridal_makeup_christan_burran.html this has to be one of the prettiest make- up looks ever. Love the strong brows and bright skin. Le sigh.

Still planning on doing my own, though!

Curtsey · 27/01/2013 14:11

Sorry, link : this

MrsRebeccaDanvers · 27/01/2013 16:18

I would be very wary of having a make up artist do your face for the first time on your wedding day. I used a famous one based in London who cost £250 and I would have looked nicer if I'd gone to a BB counter instead. Only use a make up artist if you've had him/her before and know what sort of look you're getting.

EuroShagmore · 27/01/2013 17:16

I did mine myself. I used it as an excuse to buy lots of new products and got mini lessons from the ladies at the counters (Bobbi Brown is good for bridal, as it has lots of neutral colours). Almost everyone was lovely and spent a lot of time with me when I told them it was for my wedding.

I had a trial with a make up artist. My brief was "I don't wear a lot of make up [NB I wear it every day but not heavy] so I want something natural where I will still look like me". She made me look like a hooker - smokey eyes, false eyelashes, loads of strong colours. I wouldn't have worn that much slap to a nightclub. I was quite upset as I didn't have loads of time left before the wedding. So I did it myself and was very happy with the result. I got my parents to take pictures of me on a digi camera with my eyes closed so I could make sure they were even!

One tip: in a couple of my photos I look too pale. Apparently some moisturisers and primers have SPF and other ingredients that reflect badly with a flash. I didn't know that. I had taken photos of my make up, but not with a strong flash. It's something to bear in mind. I suspect my moisturiser was to blame as that has SPF in it.

ilikecustard · 27/01/2013 18:20

Pixiewoo on YouTube do a beautiful bridal look tutorial, and tell you all the products they have used :-)

littlemissengaged · 27/01/2013 19:17

thanks euro thats really helpful.

They did offer a trial but that would be £30 which makes it £75 to get the make up done when im getting my hair washed, cut, and put up for £45 it seems alot.

I havent booked it yet as she wants a £50 deposit (covers me, mum and maid of honor) and i think i might now do my own as like you im not really a make up person, most days i just have mascara and a light eye shadow so think i too would look like a hooker :)

I had a make up artist from the beauty call franchise - I had a trial about 6 weeks before hand and then she came to me on the day. It was expensive but so worth it! My makeup looked fab all day and loads of people commented on it! It depends on your budget of course, but I would highly recommend beauty call!

littlemissengaged · 27/01/2013 19:52

i havent got the time to have someone come to my home as we have to leave for the venue by 11.15 and my hairs between 9-10, so its either do it myself in about 20 mins or go somewhere that can fit me, mum and maid of honor in 8-9.

Im gonna be rushing about like a loon!

I just lost about an hour on pixiewoo.
I know it's her bread and butter but her skin is soooo beautiful

Havingkittens · 27/01/2013 20:40

Wow, a lot of really negative comments about Make up Artists here! I feel the need to stand up for my profession. There are hundreds of thousands of make up artists, some fantastically good ones and some bloody awful ones.

The same way you would shop for your wedding dress, or anything else for your wedding, you should research what/who you are paying for and not take pot luck. And definitely have a trial beforehand. Would you choose a wedding dress off a photo on a website and then open the package on your wedding morning, having not ever tried it on, and just hope it fits and suits you?

Even the very best of us are not mind readers, so if you do get your make up done on the day, having never met or had any form of chat or consultation with the artist it's not a big surprise to end up with something you didn't quite have in mind. Many things are open to interpretation and not everyone's interpretation is the same. For example, someone may ask for a "natural" lip colour and where I would read this as something close to the colour of their lips, they may mean beige. If you were to tell a wedding dressmaker you want something long and flowing the chances are you may both have a completely different image in your minds.

Getting a Make up Artist to do your make up will not mean you get an orange face, or look like a clown, or a hooker - unless you get a shit make up artist! If you get a really good make up artist, you are more than likely to look shit hot, for the whole day until you fall into bed. You will have photos of yourself that you keep forever and feel chuffed to bits with.

If an extra £30 (which is incredibly cheap) is too unthinkable for a trial beforehand, think how gutted you would be having not had a trial and then ended up on the day with a look you don't feel good in and feel a pang of regret every time you look at the photo on your mantlepiece?

Most make up artists have a website showing their work. Look through a selection of them and ask yourself if you'd be happy to have the quality of their work on your face. If the answer is no then look at another. It's easy. If you browse in a shop and none of the stuff in there is your cup of tea, you'd go somewhere else after all.

Sorry for my long post but it breaks my heart and poses a big threat to my profession when there is a string of comments on a discussion like this pretty much saying that getting a "professional" to do your make up is going to make you look terrible. There are a lot of "so called" Make up artists out there giving us all a bad name!

TigerseyeMum · 27/01/2013 20:44

I went to the Laura Mercier counter, had a session, bought the main bits and git a talented friend to do mine. But with the session I could probably have managed it myself. Expensive but the makeup lasts ages so to me it was worth it.

And yes, get primer!!!
