Where can I buy this? I have heard it's brilliant for wrinkles but unsure how to get hold of any? Thanks.

Prescription from your GP or dermatologist, or some dodgy eBay site. It has been linked on S&B before and while it looks dodgy, apparently it's fine.
Sorry, don't know the link, but someone who knows might be along soon.

Mayisout · 14/01/2013 18:20

I think you have to avoid the sun whilst using it.

Walnutcakelover · 14/01/2013 18:27

I was recommended this by the clinic manager, haven't bought it yet, but will do.

OneHandFlapping · 14/01/2013 21:05

I bought it from here. It's strong stuff, and you might not want to use it every day, or you get a bit peely, but it makes a difference.

It arrived promptly and with no problems too.

Walnutcakelover · 14/01/2013 21:42

onehandflapping does that cream help with pigmentation marks, blemishes left from outbreaks?

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 14/01/2013 21:47

Sorry to gate crash, would it help with a pitted scar similar to a chicken pox scar? Does it leave the skin it's used on really red & sore?

laracroft2001 · 14/01/2013 21:49

What do u want it for?? Have you tried visionnaire by Lancôme??

Walnutcakelover · 14/01/2013 21:50

derby yes it will most likely leave the skin red, you might also get some peeling. Always use sunscreen if you are going out. I was told by the clinic manager to use it at night. I am not sure about the pitted scar.

ggirl · 14/01/2013 21:57

dodgy looking site
look under products to find the retin a
amazon one much cheaper
but is this one stronger??

delivery was trouble free and I have used cream with no problems ,

Walnutcakelover · 14/01/2013 22:15

ggirl do you know if that cream works on pigmentation marks?

lurkingaround · 14/01/2013 22:24

0.05% is what you're looking for. ggirls site says 5mg per 30g tube, it's hard to know what that means, seems very dilute. Someone correct my maths, it's 5mg per 3000mg, so a tird of the 0.05%. Am I right?

It can cause peeling and irritation, quite commonly, and takes some time to get used to. Also takes many months to work. But it does promote collagen production and collagen production = firmer and less wrinkled skin.

lurkingaround · 14/01/2013 22:25

And yes, it works for pigmentation marks. Scars? Prob a little, can't imagine a lot.

lurkingaround · 14/01/2013 22:29

And absolutely use high SPF. But if you're concerned about pigmentation and wrinkles, you'll be doing that anyway.

lurkingaround · 15/01/2013 10:06

It was late doing above maths. I might be completely wrong with those maths, but I think ggirl's one is more dilute, weaker. Anyway, wherever you get it, what you want is 0.05% concentration.

Walnutcakelover · 15/01/2013 10:25

I am currently using the famous brand 0.1% and paying quite abit for it, can i get the same strength but cheaper?

lurkingaround · 15/01/2013 10:28

No clue Walnut, but can you tolerate that strength? I've tried the 0.05% and found it nigh impossible to tolerate. And I don't have very sensitive skin. How much are you paying?

Walnutcakelover · 15/01/2013 10:31

Yes lurking I can tolerate it, it is for my legs, i got some dermal pigmentation after years of shaving. I think it is around £70

QuinnFabray · 15/01/2013 10:33

I tried retin a last year, over a period of a few months. Both gel and cream. I've been told that not everyone can tolerate it. It's about 50/50. Whilst my blackheads and breakouts did improve, my skin was constantly over dry, flakey, red and irritated, even when I diluted it with moisturiser and used it every other day. These side effects are supposed to ease after a few weeks, as your skin gets used to it, but for me, the side effects weren't worth it, and I'm not sure whether my skin would ever get used to it, so I stopped using it.

Just a warning, it's not a miracle product for everyone, but worth a try to see whether your skin can tolerate it or not.

SueFawley · 15/01/2013 11:13

I did a stepped programme working to using Retin A a few years ago. I started very gently with a retinoid first, using Avene Ystheal Cream. I then moved up to the higher strength Ystheal gel and then up to a retin a 0.05%. I stopped using it when I started to get a lot of daily sun exposure, intending to start again. I never did get round to it but may start again now as it did make a difference.
For anyone concerned about sensitivity and so on this is a good way to introduce your skin to retinol.
You absolutely MUST wear a good sun screen every day if you start on retin A.

nb I think Avene has discontinued the Ystheal Gel, but the cream is available, some Boots branches have it.

lurkingaround · 15/01/2013 11:18

I also gave up after about 2 months, I was just too flaky, but I might well give it another go. That's a good tip Sue.

ggirl · 15/01/2013 15:59

You have to make sure you leave your skin to dry for about 20mins after cleansing so the ph level adjusts to whatever it's supposed to be Confused
Irritation etc is lessened then
Also avoid the area around the mouth cos it seems to react more than other areas.

My problem is I am never organised enough to wash my face at least 30mins before I get into bed so I hardly ever use it.
I did read that it's a good idea to leave it by your bedside to apply after 20 mins. Still too lazy .
It is great for zapping zits though.

lurkingaround · 15/01/2013 17:23

Never knew that ggirl. I fear I won't be organised enough either. I will initially, but my commitment to it might wane!

Am now inspired to give it another go. Will dilute with my ordinary moisturiser, use twice a week and see what happens.

freerangeeggs · 15/01/2013 20:01

I smear the stuff on every night like it's going out of fashion. I still have frigging blackheads. My skin didn't even start peeling until I used 10% benzoyl peroxide cream too (which I understand I should not have done). I went on holiday last year and used it - my skin didn't burn at all. And I spent a lot of time trying to get a tan (which I also understand I should not have done).

My skin is like asbestos

OneHandFlapping · 16/01/2013 22:05

The Amazon one I recommended is 0.1%.

It's supposed to reduce pigmentation, not sure about acne scarring. I've not got either (fortunately), just wrinkles, so I can't comment.
