Is it really worth paying alot for a tinted moisturiser?

Hi
I am looking haggard after nine months of broken sleep with baby and chasing after a very lively five yr old!

My face is dry so I want a tinted moisturiser just to make me look a bit healthier, add some colour and make me feel good as currently feeling rubbish about my looks.

I am always wasting money buying things in Boots that I think are nice but after a few days I think the colour's not right for me or it doesn't look that good. So today I went to HofF and tested out TM's from Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown. The LM I did think looked nice on me, very subtle but glowing but I was staggered at the price of £33! I mean, really why do they cost so much?!!The BB one was not as nice, looked a bit cakey on me and still £28!

So my question is, is it worth me paying out for the LM and hopefully getting it right and looking half decent or should I keep working my way through the cheaper ones hoping to get it right at some point? It's annoying that in Boots you can't test them on your whole face to get a more realistic look.

Any advice would be very welcome thanks.

my sister uses the no.7 one from boots and it looks fab on her, gives a lovely glow. I can't use it as I need a bit more coverage than a tinted moisturiser can give.

Pinkflipflop · 06/01/2013 18:46

The liz Earle one is fab!!

CornyClam · 06/01/2013 18:49

I don't like the liz Earle one
I bought a sample of the dr Haushka one from amazon ( it's on offer) but it's given me spots. At my age!
Back to laura mercier I think.

Jemster · 06/01/2013 18:55

CornyClam so you would recommend the Laura Mercier then and think it's worth the money? I worry that the colour will have been ok in the shop and then look wrong back at home. That would be an expensive mistake for me!

I like my mac one that I use with smashbox primer first- great colour match and lovely and light. Skin is so much better with it too.

Turquoiseblue · 06/01/2013 19:24

I love the LM tinted mosituriser but this winter have used double wear light as felt I needed a bit more coverage, however once summer comes in again will revert to LM - I find it does last really well, and tends to give the best coverage without beig too heavy, and not melting away like some of the Tm s can. Also it lasts yonks. Expensive yea but well worth it. HTH

boodles · 06/01/2013 19:41

I find the no7 one great and I am quite fussy.

YoungJoseph · 06/01/2013 21:47

A good budget one is Nivea, was recommended to me on here, it's the one in the white tube with an SPF of 8. I've not tried the more expensive ones because of price but I have been very happy with the Nivea one. I do have dry skin btw and it's a perfectly adequate moisturiser. My only reservation is with the SPF but you could always wear a decent sun block underneath it.

CornyClam · 07/01/2013 09:03

jemster - I really like the laura mercier
I was trying to find a cheaper replacement but couldn't.
It does last yonks as well as turquoise says. (haven't used that word for ages Grin)

CornyClam · 07/01/2013 09:05

jemster - put it on your face at the LM counter - it will last till you get home for sure. Definitely check the shade.

polyhymnia · 07/01/2013 12:49

I really think the LM one is better in all respects and would not think of using a cheaper brand.

Also I use very little at a time so find the tube lasts for ages, so it seems a reasonable investment.

When getting new makeup of any kind - even lipshine - I always get them to apply it in the shop at least twice before committing, and then look at how the colour looks in the daylight, at home, etc. Only if I'm happy do I go back and buy.

I've used Clarins TM for years and loved it but am currently using Aldi or Aveeno moisturiser (depending which bathroom I'm in!) followed by Bourjois Healthy Mix serum foundation.
Have never used foundation before (age 38 Shock) and this goes on really easily, doesn't feel much different to TM and whilst it's light coverage my skin looks so much better.
I'm a convert and would highly recommend (and it's £6.99 in Boots ATM)Smile

bootsycollins · 07/01/2013 13:05

Not a tinted moisturiser but Garniers BB cream is fab for after moisturising, only need a teeny weeny amount and it's fabulous.

thefarmerhasawife · 07/01/2013 15:52

Another vote here for the LM one. I've got the oil free one and find it fantastic on days where I don't want to wear a full face of make up. Definitely worth the money imo as a little goes a long way!

cornyclam · 07/01/2013 16:28

ginvera bb creamhere is really nice if you want to try something slightly less expensive
It's similar quality to LM tinted moisturiser IMO. The colour I thought was very similar to the LM nude. It's good value as they do it in a large size and I think they offer your money back if you don't like it. I used all mine up though!

LM are doing a double size primer for the same price as the regular primer by the way. Saw it today.

LillianGish · 07/01/2013 16:35

Have you tried the Boots No 7 where they test the colour of your face to find you the perfect match? You can then opt for the lightest coverage - I have a tinted moisturiser and a various other products all in the same colour (depending on how made up I want to look). I think the key is to get a good colour match and their system seems to work well for me.

ifancyashandy · 07/01/2013 19:45

LM every time. I have two - the 'normal' and the Illuminating. It has a high pigment so a little goes a long way so it lasts for ages. In fact, it's one of those products where I cut the end off the tube to get the very last remains! I wear (mostly illuminating) at least three times a week (sometimes want a heavier coverage in winter) and I'd say a tube lasts me a year.

If you're unsure about the colour, ask them to decant some into a tester bottle. They should do so no problem.

Trills · 07/01/2013 19:50

Charging alot

EllenParsons · 07/01/2013 21:37

corny where did you see the double sized primer, do you know if they have it at space nk?

OP, I have a Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser that is a bit too dark for me, so neary full cause I cant use it. What colour are you after? I think mine is the second palest but I would have to check. If you wanted and it's the right colour I could send it to you for a few quid to cover postage.

Also I really like Clinique moisture surge tinted moisturiser which is a bit cheaper than the Laura Mercier. Think it's about £21 or £22.

BCBG · 07/01/2013 21:45

Estee Lauder Daywear sheer tint release - fantastic tinted moisturiser that adjusts to your own skin tone and gives a perfect healthy glow all year round. Ive used it for years and Im 52 now - it still works perfectly. The BB creams are mostly best on skin that doesn't need much moisture. I also use the Bobbie brown tinted moisture balm but the estee Lauder is my have. The LM ones make my skin claggy and horribly shiny, even the ordinary one.

Jemster · 07/01/2013 22:11

Thanks everyone, I am glad to hear the LM lasts a long time. I may just treat myself as if it lasts that long the price doesn't seem as shocking.
Ellen, the one I was matched with was nude. I am pretty pasty pale at the moment!
I have used EL before and liked the look but I couldn't bear the smell, I could just smell it all day on me.
Those who use LM, do you apply with a brush or fingers? She used a brush on me but can't see that ever getting really clean. Also do you use powder too to set it? I have some nice clinique loose powder so would use that up first.

The large size primer was at the LM John Lewis counter. I looked online when I got back and they had them in stock.

ifancyashandy · 08/01/2013 09:03

I apply with my fingertips. And only a very light dusting of translucent powder across the t-zone (brushed on).

cloudpuff · 08/01/2013 09:22

you can also make you own by mixing a little foundation with foundation, I bought a shade of foundation way to dark by accident, I just mix it with my moisturiser and use it up that way. One plus of doing this you get a shade that best suited to you and you get to use up two products.
