Are trainers just for young people?

Who still wears trainers aside from for sport? Now I'm a proper grown-up in my late twenties, I find I don't wear them even at the weekend; more likely to wear boots.

Is this the weather or what?

I love trainers though, but having trouble finding any that don't fall apart after 5 minutes. I have a pair of PF Flyers (2nd pair after first wore out) but they are falling apart now.

Anyone care to share your trainers recommendations? I don't want to look like a hip hop dancer, but fairly smart (if that is possible in trainers)

Thoughts?

What do you think of wedge trainers? I really like them even though I don't have them.

MarshaBrady · 06/01/2013 10:18

Ash Bowie is much liked.

Gingersnap88 · 06/01/2013 10:21

Converse and the like?

AnnoyedAtWork · 06/01/2013 10:28

Thought wedge trainers were a terrible idea but I did try some on last weekend as they look quite good. However would also want some normal ones

Converse are too flimsy IMO and not waterproof. I loathe wedge trainers. I like to go walking and wear waterproof walking shoes that look like trainers. If I am going to be on my feet all day on holiday (in the UK) I will wear trainers as well unless the weather is hot. Oh, and I am 54 BTW.

AmberNectarine · 06/01/2013 11:41

I wear Superga or the aforementioned Bowies day to day.

EuroShagmore · 06/01/2013 11:45

I never wear proper trainers except for sport. If you do, you look like an American tourist.

I wear things like Converse and Sketchers, mainly in the summer though. I go for boots in winter.

christmosschops30 · 06/01/2013 11:57

I agree with euro trainers should only be worn for sport

If youre talking about converse then yes i wear them, and so does my 68 year old mother!
Theyre not supposed to be waterproof, but they look good with jeans

ToastedTeacakes · 06/01/2013 12:22

I am due to turn 39 and considering a pair of Topshop wedge trainers. My look would suit them though, so I think this type of thing depends upon your overall style and look. Just don't do head-to-toe trends, I guess?

bishboschone · 06/01/2013 12:36

I love my wedge trainers . They are comfy enough to wear in the day . Real trainers for sport only !

PoppyWearer · 06/01/2013 12:38

Agree that normal trainers are just for sport - have always thought so, even for children.

But I do wear Converse and Ash shoes for everyday. Would include Vans and Superga in this category, they are not sports shoes IMHO!

Bunbaker · 06/01/2013 13:29

I have had to google to look at Superga as I have never heard of them before. I had never heard of Converse before posting on MN either.

Basically they are just expensive plimsolls aren't they. I'm not keen on them in this weather ad have been wearing boots most of the time. I need something that I can just slip on though so can anyone recommend me anything. They need to be waterproof, no heels and not granny looking.

AnnoyedAtWork · 06/01/2013 14:06

I think my main issue with converse etc is that they seem to wear out so quickly. But maybe that is just the nature of them, you need to buy a new pair every summer.

I would never wear sport trainers unless actually doing sport, agreed!

I live in skechers, mainly shape ups. So comfortable. I am on my feet all day, and they really take the strain.
I don't care if I look like an American tourist, at least my feet aren't aching at the end of the day.

MaureenShit · 06/01/2013 14:17

i really fancy some NIke things. My sons will cringe

AnnoyedAtWork · 06/01/2013 15:01

Might look into those Skechers. Fed up of feet hurting after a day walking in (non running) trainers.

AnnoyedAtWork · 06/01/2013 15:03

Oh dear they don't look good do they?! No offence!

I still wear esp with skinnies. Those ones you linked v nice with grey skinny cords.

Charliefox · 06/01/2013 15:29

Sketchers Go Walk are fab.

Bunbaker · 06/01/2013 15:33

I tried on some Sketchers before Christmas and thought I would wait until the sales start. I don't find heels at all comfortable for doing a lot of walking so wedge trainers are out. I wish there was a comfortable, flat, slip on stylish shoe around that I can wear with jeans.

ihearsounds · 06/01/2013 16:31

Try Amazon for skechers. On sale a lot. Occasionally show up in the warehouse as well.
Have a pair of their boots as well, bit of a heel, but totally comfy. Again without the foot ache.
