Are trainers just for young people?

Who still wears trainers aside from for sport? Now I'm a proper grown-up in my late twenties, I find I don't wear them even at the weekend; more likely to wear boots.

Is this the weather or what?

I love trainers though, but having trouble finding any that don't fall apart after 5 minutes. I have a pair of PF Flyers (2nd pair after first wore out) but they are falling apart now.

Anyone care to share your trainers recommendations? I don't want to look like a hip hop dancer, but fairly smart (if that is possible in trainers)

Thoughts?

I will have to try them on first. I can't buy online because, although I am a standard size 6 I have quite a low instep and most slip on shoes are too loose on me. I also find when I buy shoes that I have to try on several pairs before I find some that are comfortable. I might look for the ones online that I tried on though. Good idea.

I only have 2 pairs of the closest thing id say to trainers. I have adidas high tops and a lacoste pair.

I love them. I don't wear trainers and in 22.

AmberNectarine · 06/01/2013 19:10

Oh yeah I also have Nike high tops which are good. I'm clearly a covert trainer fanatic.

PackItInNow · 06/01/2013 19:38

I wear trainers a good 50% of the time when I'm not wearing my walking boots. Ever since I was pregnant with DS, over 8 yrs ago, I've worn heels only once and that was to my MIL's funeral.

The thing is, I cannot walk in heels for more than 10 mins now, so I'm usually in trainers and walking boots.

Of course, trainers are very fashionable. I have a few pairs of converse, wedge high tops and normal high tops. Your in your late 20's not your late 60's! FWIW I'm in my 30's.

I had some black suede trainer-style things that were quite good but DD has nicked them off me now her feet are about my size (but she's said that if she outgrows her lovely new walking boots I can have them).

I got some Karrimor shoes instead - more solid and much more waterproof and less trainerish than trainers.

Mayisout · 08/01/2013 21:29

The 80+ year olds flying long haul usually wear trainers.

Bunbaker · 09/01/2013 08:02

I got these in the end. I don't care if they aren't cool, but they are comfortable and practical.

nellyjelly · 09/01/2013 08:10

Skechers go walk are sooooooo comfy. I have a suede slip on style. Dunno id they are stylish or not but they look good to me.

Ariel21 · 09/01/2013 08:21

I pretty much wear converse (not great when it's wet) or some blue and gold reebok high tops every day. I love trainers (if these classify - its not like I would do wear them for sport) and can't imagine a day when I stop. I'm 29.

TameGaloot · 09/01/2013 08:40

Love that vans are not on the sports shoes list. Person who wrote that obviously has never tried skating.

Maureen, could be worn for playing drunk darts Grin

Annianni · 09/01/2013 09:15

I'm 36 40 and i've just bought some Ash bowies.

I also have some superga.

I wouldn't wear converse though as my 15 year old dsd lives in them.

Fab41 · 09/01/2013 09:19

I wear fit flop trainers, great for aching legs and feet

Annianni · 09/01/2013 09:29

I did however, try some Ash thelmas last week and I looked like a nob in them :o

I'm very fed up with trainers.
I have two old pairs of brown and cream flowery Sketchers.
Subtle, muted colours and comfy.

I don't do ballet pumps or anything except proper sandles without socks.
Proper trainers are great because, with long trousers you can wear socks.

Fine except they are getting old. Can I find any nice muted brown, cream, olive green replacements to go with chinos and skinny jeans in these colours.

Like fuck I can, they are sodding pink and purple!

I can find lots of nice men's ones, starting two sizes too big, but ladies no, they are pink.

I'm 45 not 5, I do not want Pink!!!

Startail · 09/01/2013 09:52

Yes I could get converse or vans in a subtle colour, but I live in the sticks and I like shoes that are upto two or three miles of walking round the lanes and across the odd field a bit of padding is nice.

florenceuk · 09/01/2013 10:49

I have Campers (posh sneakers) and have just bought a pair of Ash virgins in the sale (late adopter) - leather so better for rain than converse. And they don't get as scruffy as canvas.

dreamingofsun · 09/01/2013 12:52

i have some from clarkes (yes i know not trending) and i have used them for at least 2 years, though could be 3, walking the dog over rough gruond at least once a day. bottoms haven't worn at all, a crack is starting to come in the leather on top. i'm amazed at how well they have lasted....but prob no good for you fashion elite.

DialsMavis · 09/01/2013 13:06

I have leather converse boots in the winter and canvas Vans or skinny Converse in the warmer months

MoomieAndFreddie · 09/01/2013 16:28

i am 33

and i have the nike wedge hi tops. i love them, and get loads of compliments

but one of my friends said the other day people over 25 should not wear trainers :(
