FOUNDATION BRUSHES- YES OR NO?

Missbopeep · 14/12/2012 09:09

Are they a waste of money? And do they waste a lot of foundation? I suppose I am tempted but can't quite see how they do the job better than warm fingers to blend in all the crevices!

If you are a convert which brands would you suggest?

I use a MAC one and I love it. I think the end results are much better than when I use just my fingers. I watched a couple of videos in youtube to learn how to use it properly and now I am totally converted. Plus I never find foundation stuck to my finger nails any more half way through a meeting :-)

Tweet2tweet · 14/12/2012 09:21

I am a convert as of 2 weeks ago. Went to Clinique and they used one to apply the tinted moisturiser I was buying. I wasn't convinced but had a Bobbi Brown one at home I received as part of a gift. Tried one day applying with fingers, then next with brush. Much better coverage with brush and less used! The only thing you have to be careful of is that it is blended well in corners of nose and around eye area.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 14/12/2012 09:22

I have a Body Shop brush and it is great. I use it when I am going out as it gives a better coverage and finish. For everyday I use my fingers.

LaTrucha · 14/12/2012 09:26

For me, no. I bought a very expensive one and I never use it. I just use my finngers. I've never looked at anythig to tell me how to use it properly though.

MissNJE · 14/12/2012 09:58

If I do my make up during the week I usually use my fingers. However for evening make up etc. i use a foundation brush. Either one from MAC or my current favourite is the stippling brush by realtechniques.

AppleOgies · 14/12/2012 10:03

I find that using a brush gives me more coverage, as I don't really need much coverage for day to day I often use my fingers.

The guest make up artist on lisaeldridge (YouTube) said she thinks they're pointless and unhygienic and often dirty so she uses her fingers (even on clients).

iloveeverton · 14/12/2012 10:09

I use a body shop one to spread evenly then bland with my fingers. Thanks Lisa Eldridge on youtube!

MissNJE · 14/12/2012 10:54

applegies

Doesn't she know that you need to clean them after every use?

squoosh · 14/12/2012 10:57

A big YES to foundation brushes. I use the Mac 187 stippling brush but hear great things about Real Techniques too which are much cheaper but apparently just as good.

A brush gives a lovely polished application of foundation.

QuinnFabray · 14/12/2012 11:32

Clean them after every use? Sod that! I clean mine about once a week.

QuinnFabray · 14/12/2012 11:36

I like to apply foundation with my fingers and then buff over it with a brush. I like the Sigma kabuki brushes (F80, F82) best of all. It just gives the foundation a really nice finish. Real Technique brushes are very good too.

Hopefully · 14/12/2012 12:16

Brush way better than fingers, better coverage for less product, much more natural looking too IMO. Damp sponge also good, but it uses up quite a lot of product.

Hopefully · 14/12/2012 12:16

I have a Mac one, BTW.

41notTrendy · 14/12/2012 12:21

Yes. I have a really old (regularly cleaned Grin) Estée Lauder one. Good coverage and I find my foundation goes further/ lasts longer.

AppleOgies · 14/12/2012 12:42

I don't know... I imagine she does (she's a top make up artist).

But she said she finds them pointless and unhygienic. Maybe she said unhygienic because generally people do not clean their make up brushes everyday!

DolomitesDonkey · 14/12/2012 14:01

I have a MAC one - bought from a MAC counter and the handle keeps falling off... nonetheless the brush is lovely.

Right, to the point:

Yes they're brilliant with expensive foundation.

No they're shit with high street stuff.

This is my conclusion after using a brush on and off for a decade. Stuff in pots sold as foundation which requires a blow torch to blend it in to an approximation of skin coverage will look like the work of a 2 year old with acryllics if you use a brush. Otoh, a beautiful fluid foundation will blend in to nothing with a good brush.

So my conclusion is that no brush on earth can save you from bad foundation!

Missbopeep · 14/12/2012 15:21

Do they uuse up lots of foundation though? I tried my DDs brush once and seemed to use 3x as much foundation as I do with my hands because it sank into the brush. ie one pump from a bottle almost does my face but with a brush I need 3 pumps to even dip the brush in and spread.

If you want to try it out without "committing" to buying a pricey brush, I use this L'Oreal one for my going out make-up (i.e. when I've applied copious amounts of fake tan). I like it, pretty good and gives you good coverage.

Honesttodog · 14/12/2012 15:35

I'd say go and have a makeover and watch someone apply it.

I bought foundation for the first time in years earlier this yr, and bought a brush for it while I was in the states.

When I bought the foundation, the make up guy explained that the small tub wd last about a year given I don't wear it every day, and he said using a brush would mean less wastage (a certain amount will get absorbed by yr fingers). I used the brush for the first time last week and I found it v easy to use. I dabbed a small amount on the back of my hand then dipped the brush into this - only the very tip, and was able to smooth on a very sheer layer. I was really pleased with the effect.

I use chantecaille foundation and it was expensive but I am confident that it was worth it. I had a bobby brown make over before that and their foundation was far too heavy and the make up lady applied way too much.

Overall, YES to a brush. I think it will give you the best even coverage, which is what you want, right?

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 14/12/2012 18:39

YES! I use the No.7 one and it's good.

swooosh · 14/12/2012 18:43

yes mac 187, love it!

chipstick10 · 14/12/2012 18:52

I use mac 187 brush. It's a big mineral brush and it gives a really air brushed finish. It's fabulous and I wouldn't be without it.

squoosh · 14/12/2012 19:31

swoosh we're practically twins with our names and our Mac 187 brushes!

PastaDee · 14/12/2012 20:24

Love mine. In order to stop dirt getting in the bottle / using too much foundation I use a cotton bud to dab the foundation on before blending in with the brush.

Jammygal · 14/12/2012 20:30

I love a brush!!! You'll find your foundation lasts longer as you don't use as much and don't waste it all covering your fingers :)
