Probably done to death...but I need a warm knee length down coat with hood

The shorter ones that are everywhere just look wrong on me. I am 5ft 7. I have a lovely looking one from Mango last year that is warm but useless really as the zip is faulty and it won't do up and the feathers keep leaking out of it! I love the look of the aigle cuckmere but don't want to spend that much. I am thinking more the £100 mark Grin
I tried this Zara one on in store which is knee length on me but it just didn't seem very warm, does anyone have it?
zara down coat
can anyone help?

I love that agile one .. Have you tried it on? I have a Zara one from 2 years ago which is beautifully soft and comfy but its too big now .. I tried on this years offerings and they are hard .. I would stretch to the agile one if you can.

CMOTDibbler · 13/12/2012 14:43

Lands End - super warm and reasonable pricing

Missbopeep · 13/12/2012 14:46

Uniqlo?

eggsfloursugarbutter · 13/12/2012 14:52

Have you tried Timberland? IME the really good long warm ones ie The North Face etc are all around the £250 mark. It is a lot but if it were to last you for years the cost per wear would be low Grin.

justasecond · 13/12/2012 14:54

Thanks all.

Have not tried on the Aigle but it looks like it might be knee length one me. Does anyone have it? I wonder if they ever go in the sale...
Missbopeep Uniqlo ones are never long enough on me...

Get a Didriksons.... I have the Taylor, they are quite brilliant, long (I am 6'), waterproof and warm. Plus they are not down so your conscience will be clear!

suebfg · 13/12/2012 17:30

I have ordered several, including one from Zara. The best one I tried in that budget was from monsoon in olive and a furry collar. I liked it till the aigle cuckmere was delivered. The aigle was far superior in terms of warmth and quality. It was £240 from John Lewis. I kept the cuckmere

suebfg · 13/12/2012 17:30

I would say the aigle is just below the knee. It is a lovely coat

suebfg · 13/12/2012 17:31

I am 5 ft 6 ish

I got a really nice and super duper warm one from TK Maxx - bargain reduced from £220 to £80 (Fenn Wright Manson one). It's right down to my knees and I'm 5'7", keeps my bum warm.

On another thread about down coats recently, another poster mentioned that there is animal cruelty involved in obtaining the down. Some birds are plucked whilst alive and this causes them pain and distress. If that is the sort of thing that would concern you, you might want to look into it further.

I am on the fence about it as I have been cold every winter until I bought this coat, and whilst I do think it is wrong that birds should be put through such pain when it appears to be avoidable (not all down is produced in this way, but from what I can gather the complexity of the industry is such that it's pretty much impossible to source cruelty-free down and be sure that no birds have suffered from its production) I am really appreciating being warm this year. Also I have goose down duvets which I love. I have no plans to bin either the duvets or the coat, so I guess that makes me a hypocrite Blush.

I will think carefully and do more research before I buy any more down products though.

Drywhiteplease · 13/12/2012 22:46

I'm waiting for Lands End to do a discount on coats then I'm getting one of their down filled long coats

LadyofWinterfell · 13/12/2012 22:56

I'm allergic to down, does anywhere do something similar in a non allergenic filling?

I love the look of the down coats!

suebfg · 14/12/2012 13:01

Note that the Aigle coat does come with a real fur trim (unless you buy via John Lewis as they have a strict no fur policy). It is detachable though.

QuinnFabray · 14/12/2012 13:13

Everywhere's out of bloody stock.

Imlostwithoutahope · 14/12/2012 13:44

2nd a landsend coat. Really warm, varying lengths and colours/designs

bishboschone · 14/12/2012 14:08

sUE...do they put a fake fur hood on the same coat? I don't want real fur but I love that coat.

Tweet2tweet · 14/12/2012 14:17

I got this in TK Maxx for £39.99:

www.brodiecountryfare.com/item/Brand_JackMurphyFernIIIPaddedCoatBlack_0_0_3840_1.html?ref=froogle

It's very warm and although not waterproof it is shower proof. I'm 5foot 8" and it comes mid calf (covering my bum!). Am a 10 and bought 14 as am expecting at the mo.

justasecond · 14/12/2012 14:43

Thats interesting Suefg. I didn't realise the fur was real, I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing anything real fur. Although I suppose that is completely hypocritical given the reality of the down industry.

I know this is heresy on a S&B thread but have you looked on eBay? There's a white Land's End coat currently for £12 including P&P. I'm tempted to get one of the ones from China for 61p just for the hell of it.

Can't believe one poster spent £240 on a coat. Different worlds and all that.

suebfg · 14/12/2012 15:17

Lol, guess that was me then. In my defence, I did order much cheaper coats to compare it with and the cuckmere was far warmer and practical. Sometimes it is worth paying more if you can afford it.

The fur trim is real so if you get it from John Lewis, it comes without the fur. There isn't an option for fake fur.

Honesttodog · 14/12/2012 15:45

I'm happy with my one from Benetton, v warm and a nice fitted waist.

not sure if it is an ethical coat or not.

QueenofWhatever · 14/12/2012 15:50

suebfg it wasn't a criticism! Thinking about it though, even if I could afford it I'm not sure I could bring myself to spend that much on a coat.

abitcoldupnorth · 14/12/2012 15:53

3rd/4th for Lands End. I'm also 5'7''.

akaemmafrost · 14/12/2012 16:06

If you can afford it, North Face. I bought one from there two years ago, so its my third winter with it. Its still immaculate, still looks up to date and I honestly can't see myself replacing it for another three years. It was £190 but if I have it for even five years then it will have only cost me £38 a year. Pretty good I think and its toasty!

Ds also got one from there at the same time and this will be his last year with it (also third winter) but only because it will be too small for him next year. I will ebay it, thats how good condition it is still in.

sparkle12mar08 · 14/12/2012 16:09

I agree, it's a different world. My £35 winter coat has had to last me four years now, and I won't be replacing it this year either. There's no way I could spend £40-50 every year on a new coat, let alone nearly £300 in one go - that's my family's food budget for an entire month!
