Gorgeous winter coats past and present - inspire me!

I have far too many coats and I absolutely love them. I've got a ridiculous-but-glam full length black velvet one (no, it's not 'goth' at all), and a really nice 70s one my mum left me. I also have a cream one with a fur collar that I got from French Connection a couple of years back, and which I believe MN S&B told me about.

And I've just bought my first ever leather jacket, which I keep wanting to sniff because it smells so good.

What good buys have you seen recently, or what's your dream coat (maybe someone on here can find it for you). Sadly, my dream one is those long, very elegant caramel-coloured coats that were trendy a couple of years ago, that come down to about calf-length and tie with a belt at the waist. I look like a hamster in them.

Strangely, my eBay watch list is full of those camel coats with a belt. I used to have a georgeous one but the moths ate it.
I want a buttery soft, orange 1970s jacket, with a belt. Or red.

I love leather - I can't quite picture orange leather that I'd like, but I think that's because I've seen a fair few pleather coats that turn orangey with age. Would it be a sort of rust colour, or what?

Red leather is just beautiful.

When I was at school this girl had a three-quarter length coat made of dark chocolate brown suede and I was sooo envious. I like to think there's one out there for me somewhere and I will find it one day!

(And maybe even afford it!)

Aren't the names people use for colours nice? Chocolate and coffee and pumpkin.

I have a big ex-Russian Army greatcoat that I bought from Greenwich market in the early 90s. And a slouchy black wool coat with a velvet shawl collar that I bought in Bloomingdales in New York in the mid-90s. And a princess-style blue coat from Hobbs that I bought two years ago and hardly ever wear because it is 'too good'. And I just bought this but in dark green for and am wearing it every day and loving it.

That's very classy. My velvet coat is from Hobbs, too - I think they're good on coats.

Liking the sound of your ex-Russian Army greatcoat! I do like clothes with a bit of history. And I guess because coats are quite sturdy they seem to survive to second-hand quite nicely.

Tether all your coats sound lovely. I live coats. I'm an 8 to 10? Really? Under your stairs? Do you want to sell it? I do have a lot if coats although we had a big clothes cull when we moved. The one on easy is prob too long? Maybe, I'm only about 5'5"

I should get the greatcoat out from under the stairs. I used to wear it with my purple DMs with green laces. But I am hoping DH will take the hint and get me these for Christmas which would be just as good a combo. Although maybe I should check they are not 'mum boots' first in case I'm committing another S&B faux pas so soon on the heels of tunicgate.

They are very nice! I would like those and I'm not usually a DM fan.

I have to admit I bought some boots with DH recently and am having so-so feelings about them. I don't know what counts as 'mum boots' though.

I love those boots. Who cares if they're mum boots (although they're not).

I can walk in most things. I don't promise not to look like a gibbon straddling a donkey while I do it though.

That's lovely LRD! It costs more than my car was though! fantasy coat shopping is a nice way to spend a winter evening.

Oh, wow. But I think you'd need to be tall. I'd look like one of santa's elves who'd forgotten her fur-lined red cap.

What do you think of leopard print? There's a MNer who has this fabulous glam-looking leopard coat with a sort of vintage look to it, and it made me want. And I don't usually do print stuff.
