Hey all. Won't be joining the thread but wanted to pop in to say stick with it (or, go for it, if you've yet to take the plunge) Xmas Grin

I finished 18 months of treatment 6 months ago and it is one of the best things I have done for myself, beauty wise. I had fixed braces which were tooth coloured. I switched to metal wires 9 months into treatment and wished I had had them from the start. They look cleaner and brighter than the tooth coloured version (which are noticeable anyway since your teeth are gappy/not straight). I now wear a retainer most nights and have a retainer wire behind my top 4 front teeth. The transformation has been stunning. I had a huge gap closed and front teeth uncrossed.

Good luck everyone!

I really want braces. I have my brother's wedding next summer and want my teeth to look better than they did at my own Sad.

It all looks very expensive though.

My orthodontist offered an interest free payment plan. Don't know if that's common practice?

Perhaps I'll ask my dentist about it? I'm actually due a check up this month, have felt a bit embarrassed about mentioning it before but I've always hated my teeth.

greggs your dentist might have one to show you?
If you answer the phone all day, I would recommend you get it fitted on a Friday and give yourself the weekend to get used to it. The top plate doesn't sit flush with the top of your mouth so it takes a few days to get your tongue round the words.
My dentist said if I really needed to, I could take it out, but not for more than 4 hours at a time, as teeth will move in that time and undo the past 20 hours of work. I've been wearing this for 23 hours a day, which might be why it's worked so fast.
Good luck for your consultation. Let us know how you get on.

I will do. I am expecting an operation date for a hysterectomy in February meaning 6 weeks off work. I might try and tie them both in. I reckon it will take until the middle of January for me to have braces or the inman in place with Christmas holidays anyway. Thanks for your help.

Just want to say if anyone is dithering about getting braces - just go for it. My brace was removed just over a year ago and I'm so pleased with the results.

I was treated as a teenager back in the '70s (yes I'm that old) with terrible overcrowding, had 4 teeth removed, full metal train tracks top and bottom. Trouble was after all that work I didn't wear my retainer and top teeth just moved back and looked awful.

So years later my new dentist wanted to refer me to his wife who's an orthodontist and I finally took the plunge in March 2011 with the hope of finally having straight teeth for my 50th birthday in April 2013. Ceramics just on top teeth. Had no trouble at all really just a bit sore when first on. Teeth moved really quickly and had brace off November 2011. Now got fixed retaining bar behind teeth and wear removable retainer every other night.

£1400 - best money I ever spent.

Just make sure you wear your retainer!

Mine is costing 3k but I'm paying it through the dental practice finance over 2years, though i could have spread it over 3 ...I will have lovely straight teeth before I hit 30!

After my DD was born I just thought f*ck it what have I got to lose I'm never going to regret it, I've always hated my teeth and you only live once!!

Squirted yes thanks, I have found a few though as I am rural I might have to venture into London. I am dithering as I would rather have a personal recommendation ...
Saycheeeeese I am feeling that way too - have spent too much of my life already trying to speak with my mouth closed!

Spoke to my dentist about the Inman. She has heard of it but doesn't overly recommend - they wouldn't really would they! She tells me to do the train track route for a better finish. Has concerns about my bite if I have Inman. We will see as I am having consultations with both but if mine can be sorted in a few weeks rather than months then I know what option I will take.

Best money I ever spent! 2 years of fixed braces which I had off 2 years ago. Don't know why I waited so long, 2 years went so quickly and they weren't that visible-most people never noticed! I have bonded retainers top and bottom which will stay there forever! Love my new teeth-can't believe how I used to try not to smile to hid e them! I would say that fixed braces are supposed to give better longer lasting results, and I honestly can say that they are not very obvious at all.

Woohoo! My brace is out, retaining wire behind teeth.
And they look really really good. I am delighted.

I've just started with Invisalign (well, two weeks ago, but I've been rubbish over Christmas). They are really good so far, and no-one has spotted/commented on them, not even DM, DSiS or (very unobservant) DH. My speech was a bit weird at the beginning, but seems fine now... Great to know so many others are opting for braces/straightening

themousetookastroll im very pleased with mine, no one ever notices though I have a big attachment on my eye tooth which makes my teeth look even more crowded that they are!

Do you have to have any attachments or IPR done? I had my first IPR 2 weeks ago and it wasn't as bad as I expected.

I've had my wire & elastics changed today on my 'invisible' 6month smiles fixed braces, so feel very tender at the mo! Am hoping that they will be off soon-ish, they've been on for 7.5months so far. Cant wait for it all to be over!

Getting my aligner. Just to go back for impressions and they will make it for me.

Report
scripsi · 02/01/2013 16:50

I am still on the fence, quite keen on the aligner but am hoping to find a dentist who does lots of different kinds of appliance: aligner, invisalign, 6monthsmile etc. so I make the right choice. I may have to travel to London for this. In the meantime I am saving up for them.

Report
gregssausageroll · 02/01/2013 17:27

The dentist I found would do traditional braces, aligner and Invisalign. I was under no pressure for any of them as he said he could do any of them. Totally my choice.

That's great Gregs. My dentist only does invisalign or traditional so not great for an unbiased opinion and I would prefer the aligner as it is only my front teeth which are the problem.

Report
gregssausageroll · 02/01/2013 18:56

It is only my front 3 that have a problem. It was very interesting when he showed me the computer generated drawing of my teeth and hat would happen. Shitting myself over having teeth shaved though.

Report
scripsi · 02/01/2013 19:03

I would have to have my teeth shaved also I have no doubt - a friend had to have this done and was surprised how quick, easy and painless it was!
