DD thinks if I wear trews to a wedding it'll make me look "old".

Is she right?

She is part of the wedding party, and as such is apparently privy to everyones outfit choice. She says the 90yo grand matriachs of the family will be wearing trousers, and I deffinately shouldn't.

I was thinking printed peg-legged trousers & platforms.

Is that ok for a size 16/18 wedding?

She is 10 ffs.
I am 32.

Trews are the way to discuss leg wear

YouCanBe · 30/11/2012 08:48

I think patterned trousers are difficult for anybody older than about 22.
I can't see any nice ones on the Next website.

Maybe I am behind the times though.

ADifferentKindOfMum · 30/11/2012 08:51

Just wanted to share my recent experience!

At my sister-in-law's wedding 2 September's ago, I wore trousers. I totally had in mind how "cool" I was going to look (even a thread on here somewhere about insouciant French-girl cool - pah!) and looking back at the photos, weeeeeel.

I bought Boden navy wool trousers, dove grey LK Bennett silk shirt, herringbone patterned jersey blazer from Top Shop and some red ballet pumps. Outfit fine by itself but by god in the photos I look like my DP's MUM. It put years on me and I looked like a schoolteacher!

This year to another Wedding, I wore an inexpensive navy silk grecian-style dress from Asos, and felt like a million bucks!

Hope that helps!

Tbh even though I'm not really a dress wearer, I've almost always gone for the default dress option for weddings just because I found it so hard to get a trouser outfit right - not too casual, or too officey, or too evening-y - so I guess a dress is the safe option.

I'm sure the stylish people here can help you find the right ones though!

5madthings · 30/11/2012 08:54

I wore wide leg trousers and jacket to a wedding with a lovely designer top, the trousers and jacket were by east? Got them.in.john lewis, i then had a dress for the evening due. It wssnt olfd, the cut was flattering and it was practical as i had four small boys to look after. It depends on the yrousers, i got numerous compliments.

Look at all the trouser beauty here

UterusUterusGhouli · 30/11/2012 09:07

I too have small people to run around after.

Ok, the ones I were considering, and were in my basket are;
These

And, if I can find them,

OP posts:
UterusUterusGhouli · 30/11/2012 09:12

these

I'd probably wear them with a bright wrap style jersey long sleeved top, peep-toe shoe boots, (to be swapped for flats later) and a fuck-off big flower in my hair, coz I'm old, like. Wink

Great link, Perry. Did I spy a spangly flare?
Do you think it will translate from those willowy goddesses to an overweight, 5'4" mum from the home counties?

I don't really like any of those for a wedding. They're nice enough for other occasions, but a bit casual for a wedding, I think.

Have you considered having a personal shopper session in somewhere like John Lewis for outfit ideas? You say you only suit wrap dresses, but I bet you suit other stuff too, maybe just not tried it yet? You needn't buy anything, but it might give you some ideas.

SavoyCabbage · 30/11/2012 09:28

Well, they certainly make a statement.

PerryCombover · 30/11/2012 09:31

What about pyjama trousers?

winkle2 · 30/11/2012 09:33

If you can pull it off I think you'll look v cool! Go for it!

DonaAna · 30/11/2012 09:47

There is a fine line to walk between looking very dreary and middle-aged (cue: black flared trousers with high polyester content) and MC Hammer wannabe (brocade pants on the wrong person).

If you really want to wear trousers, I go to quite a lot of parties and have seen quite a few flowy black silk trousers that reach to the ground covering the shoes. Pulling off this look successfully means that you still have to be a bit willowy still (I saw a 40sth wearing them successfully as a hostess but she was French), and trousers need to be made of good natural materials (static!) and comfortable moving around in them. Brocade trousers are also chic this season but to pull them of you have to flaunt slim ankles - otherwise there is a risk of looking like an overstuffed sofa. Their tapered line can also make hips look much bigger.

I would not wear trousers to a wedding, especially not to a country one. I'd pick a simple dress made from good materials.

musicalendorphins · 30/11/2012 09:47

They look very casual in my opinion, (not that I ever know what to buy)

You say you like wrap v neck dresses, why not look for a dressy wrap dress, in a nice silky fabric, without a pattern?

Ephiny · 30/11/2012 09:48

Well they certainly don't look like a 'safe option' to me Shock

DonaAna · 30/11/2012 09:51

Oh and V neck wrap style dress made out of silk or good quality jersey can be very flattering, even sexy in a subtle way. For winter I'd pick a jewel shade and try to find 3/4 sleeves. Here in Italy black sheer tights are everywhere this season, so you don't need to freeze in bare legs.

UterusUterusGhouli · 30/11/2012 10:08

That link takes me to the home page, Perry. My phone really objects to me typing pajama too!

Do you mean the china medallion ones? Coz they are lush. I fear they may just be expensive pjs.

I have a gammy leg and, as such, have always worn trousers to weddings. As long as they are smart enough, I don't see the problem. A nice trouser top combo can look a lot better than a predictable Coast dress or similar number. Some people on this thread are being a little small minded! I am 'old' though! Well, in my forties! Haven't ever worn patterned trousers. Would just accentuate the gammy-ness!
In my experience, it tends to be the younger ones who wear trousers. I have never seen anyone over the age of 50 wear trousers to a wedding!

UterusUterusGhouli · 30/11/2012 10:32

They're not that casual!

OP posts:
PerryCombover · 30/11/2012 10:47

Agree with that.
I have only ever seen stylish women in trousers at weddings.
Vast vast vast majority wear skirt/dress from 0-100

DinosaursOnAnAdventCalender · 30/11/2012 10:59

Woah those trousers are hideous will definitely stand out Shock

I couldn't wear them as they would make my already big enough backside look humongous.

PerryCombover · 30/11/2012 10:59

Did you look at these fellas?
I love them

nancerama · 30/11/2012 11:08

DM, who is 69 but puts me to shame by never looking anything less than fabulous, even when dressing down, says trousers should never be worn to a wedding. Ever.

I think she means it's ok for men to wear them though.

I think the danger is that women's trouser fashion changes a lot, so what looks fabulous today may look frankly ridiculous in the photos in 5 years time.
