Crappy thin, fine hair. What products do you use?

That's it in the title really.

My children have ruined my hair, it's fine, falling out and thinning rapidly. There is new hair growth around my hairline so maybe there's some hope!

I'm hopeless at styling my hair and I need help please.

Is it worth buying the fabled Babyliss big hair?

What products do you use to boof things up a bit?

Thank you, style gurus :)

There are so many products, some nicer than others - e.g., I can't stand the powder.

I had some PR shots taken yesterday and I didn't have much time to prepare and as a result my hair looks flat and awful. Shiny yes, swishy yes. Stuck to my scalp yes.

I just cba to blow-dry daily with big products although as a concession I'm going out tonight and will use heated rollers to get some lift. I think it's time to bite the bullet and get it all shorn off again.

Use very little conditioner, or none.
Wear your hair as short as you feel comfortable.
Wait until your hair is nearly dry before blow-drying - the natural drying puts some volume in.
Use a small amount of product at the roots and blow dry upside down.
Batiste Dry Shampoo extra volume version is amazing, although it makes your hair much less shiny.
Take heart - I was amazed once when a colleague with thick, wavy hair said she was envious of my 'glossy hair'.!

Headmasters Big Glam Hair, shampoo, conditioner, thickening styling cream and hairspray are good and smell OR.
Samy Fat Hair, shampoo, conditioner, thickening styling cream, hairspray etc..
this one is truly amazing for big big hair but it does tend to look a little dull and can go tooo big. I have a below ear length layered bob and have had fine hair all my life and find fat hair brill and headmasters next .

sorry meant to say Headmasters smells really nice and are available at Tesco. Samy Fat Hair is in Superdrug.

I'm in the same boat after three children. I think blow-drying is key (get a really powerful, really hot one and a big, round brush) and also keeping it as short as possible. I don't know what your diet is like but I went vegetarian a few years ago and after a few months I started losing clumps of hair (despite being really conscientious about getting all the correct nutrients). I scrapped that and started focussing on more protein and iron (eggs for breakfast and making sure to eat red meat once a week etc.) and my hair is now much better. Highlights can also help make hair look thicker.

I wouldn't go to the hairdresser because my hair is fine & thin, and I hate a) sitting under the lights and seeing my scalp shining away and b) having the hairdresser comment on the thinness.
So I hadn't had a haircut in 9 months. My hair grows like a weed and it was verrrry long and straggly. Eventually last weekend I snapped and had a layered collarbone length cut done. It looks 10 times thicker because the top layers are not weighed down and bounce up a bit.
I also changed my parting to off-centre and bought a mousse.

I look much younger and feel so much better

Another vote for, first geting a good short cut, then using Kerastase Volumactive shampoo.

I also use L'oreal Tec Ni Art spray mousse before drying it, and sometimes a bit of product from one of the L'Oreal Playballs afterwards to break up/ give texture- I like the ones with bright pink and blue tops, but a good hairdresser will advise.

My hair is very fine, though not thin.

I have been reading this thread with great interest. Lots of good tips..

Sorry to hijack the thread but any advice for limp, heavy, but fine hair after water softener been re-installed after new extension finished. I was using Kerastase Bain No 1 (in pink bottle) but no longer working. Tried a different shampoo today but same problem, anyone had a similar issue?

I do wash my hair every day and blow dry it but try to let it dry naturally before styling it. Oh and short bob under ears so not a lot of hair!!!

Any ideas how I can fix it as I am feeling horrible?? Thanks

Hello all and thank God for finding a forum like this .
I have always had fine thin straggly hair ..in fact I do remember when I was a little feeling very grand when my mothers friend made the comment for the first time.."My hasn't she got fine hair" Little did I know what an absolute bane that damn thing would be .I am a little old for the forum having completed the menopause a few years ago but I'm hoping for any tips to help not only thin..but thinning hair that just about covers my head if I don't stand i the wind ...cheers :)

I have dyed blonde poker straight hair just about shoulder length, its over processed and very very fine and thin. It looked ok when it was just washed, just limp looking, but after about an hour it goes really really frizzy. I would really thank you for any help with this as it feels really pointless trying anything with it any more, apart from tying it up. Getting desperate for help .

Shorter and layers is the way forward with fine hair - anything too long and it starts looking like a limp helmet Sad

I like the L'Oreal Ever Riche for fine hair which is essentially the same as one of the Kerastase lines. And one of the serums, any will do - John Frieda Frizz-Ease is still great, Morrocan Oil - they all have much the same ingredients ie silicones and are great for frizz.

I've got really fine, thin hair too. I find mousse helps but having seen the recommendations from some of you ladies I've just watched the babyliss big hair tutorial on you tube and it looks amazing! I know what's on my Christmas list now Grin

Another vote for no conditioner most of the time as a good shampoo should be enough (but I do have quite short hair).

I find sea salt spray the best thing for volume and the Lee Stafford one is the best brand I've tried so far. I put it in before and after drying - but it's not for the days you want someone to run their hands through your hair and tell you how smooth and soft it is!

A little bit of occasional backcombing helps on really flat hair days, together with those volumising powders already mentioned.

Yep I have fine, thin (but shiny) hair too.
*Yes to haircut: just had about 2-3 inches of mine cut so it's barely skiffing my shoulders now, and looks a lot better volume-wise. I also had 'separated layers' put in which help add a smidge of width.
*i am lazy but when I do actually dry my hair I use bumble and bumble volumising spray.
*haha yes dry powder does feel like shit but I had some put in my hair at the hairdresser the last time I had an updo done and my hair looked SOOO thick! (There was a bit of backcombing too though!)

Marking place so I can read all the very useful comments as I have the exact same problem as hairdresser is very reluctant to cut it short as I have such poor hair growth at the front after dc

Has anyone tried Moroccan hair oil volumising mousse? Am tempted to get some but don't want to waste my money I thought it might be a softer texture than most mousse.

Get your hair cut every six weeks. The good thing about fine hair is how sharp a good cut looks.

I use mousse, volumising power and dry shampoo.

Well I've always complained that my hair is too thick, but don't worry, I'm not just here to gloat. I'm here for a reason....

My gf has got really fine hair and I know it's really getting her down. She also hates going to the hairdressers and having them point out that her hair is really thin. It's like thanks for pointing out the obvious! Anyway, was thinking about buying her the BBH for Christmas, but I'm reluctant for two reasons. 1. Because I'm worried I'll just offend her and 2. her main problem area is her scalp, as in, it's quite visible now. So not sure if a super hairdryer could fix this. Does it help with that?

She's not had any children and is only in her mid twenties. I think it was initially stress related. I've seen pictures when she was younger and her hair was really full and quite thick. Unfortunately, since all the stress happened, it never went back to normal.

I really want to be able to help her if I can. She's very much a just deal with
It and get on with things, but I don't think she realises that there are things out there that could help her a bit.

I've got fine hair (but lots of it) - colour eg highlights give it body.

Also Redken Spray Wax (the buggers have changed packaging so name may be different) is great for volume and hold.

I also swear by a mousse L'Oreal Pofessionelle Tecni Art Volume Spray Mousse - the beauty of this is you can spray it exactly where you need it.

BBH is great too.

I'd also say unless your hair needs it don't go for conditioners that weigh it down.

Ok, I have long thin fine hair which I wear pinned up all the time, I can 'push' it up to give the appearance of volume. If I have it short I have to wash it at least once every day to give the appearance of volume. Any ideas?

I have baby fine limp hair and have tried every product under the sun with very little success. I find regular trims and a scalp massage once or twice a week with caster oil help.... then last week I tried using a Babyliss mini crimper just on the roots and - tada! My hair is super bouncy and full of volume doesn't matter what products I use- truly miraculous!

Another vote here for the Aussie brands. I have fine hair that would happily just sit lank on my head if I let it. I try not to wash it more than twice a week as otherwise it's really limp, but the Aussie shampoo, conditioner and mousse work pretty well for me.

Natural products without the addition of unnecessary chemicals are the best choice to care for fine and/or thinning hair and a shampoo with the added benefits of ingredients known to fight hair loss will not only give the illusion of more fullness but will actually help restore and revitalize thinning hair. Check out these options for some great suggestions:
