Will this fit the bill. Dull but seasonal?

I am also eyeing BIWI's thread. I feel I ought to give it a go (and I certainly need to), but can I really face no carbs? And does it all pile on when you stop CV?

No BTM, the weight doesn't just pile on when you stop low-carbing, it takes weeks of dedicated festive overeating to achieve that.Grin

I find it dead easy to stick to when I'm in the usual termtime/work routine, but I need to get back on that wagon. A couple of weeks of super-strictness is what I need.

bigTillyMint · 04/01/2013 22:08

DH and I would love that ruby, but the DC have got their hearts set on another AI hotel somewhere hot... I am happy anywhere I can relax in the sun with lots of books!

Aahh CV, I could do that quite easily. The weeks of dedicated overeating, not the superstrictness!Grin

Actually, I probably could manage the lunch/dinner, but I need carbs at breakfast. I am not into fry-ups... what else could I have?

Ruby, our upstairs mouse has a downstairs friend. I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye a couple of days ago, but earlier this evening DH saw one shooting out of the utility room and into the dining room. DD2 and I had him cornered but he evaded our cardboard box and raced off.

So the humane traps have been set....

Blackduck · 05/01/2013 08:11

Whoever mentioned skiing - never have and neither has ds so don't know! Any other ideas?
I am definitely going to give this low carb thing a go. I did it for two days (before dp's birthday and the wake yesterday) and I wouldn't say I lost any weight but I was certainly less bloated.
Funeral was amazing - standing room only in the church and outside (I reckon I could only rustle up a pews worth!) lots of lovely speeches by his children and friends. Back to the local for the wake, where is youngest read a poem he had written basically saying what he wanted for Christmas was his dad (he's 17) - the room was reduced to tears. He was an amazing man.

After hearing from virtually everyone at work how they had been sick over Christmas and feeling smug that I had avoided it I have woken up this morning with a horrible sore throat....

herbaceous · 05/01/2013 09:19

BTM - re low-carbing, I did a sort of 'lite' version, cutting out pasta, potatoes, bread, cakes, and all that but still eating fruit, pulses, rice now and then, starchy veg, etc. Made life a lot easier than totally rethinking everyone's diet, and still seemed to work.

For breakfast I'd have full-fat yoghurt and fruit, or eggs and bacon.

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/01/2013 09:42

Mmm, egg and bacon...

Herbs, when do we get to see your kitchen? I have kitchen envy as mine is the size of a large cupboard (apparently it's "a good size" for Paris Hmm), and if we go back to London I will have to have ours completely redone, which doesn't fill me with joy.

I am thinking of low carbing. Can one eat quinoa while low carbing? (I eat a lot of quinoa...)

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/01/2013 09:43

I will wait till MI's visit is out of the way though, as I am going to take her to my favourite restaurant here. Grin

motherinferior · 05/01/2013 09:44

I personally am coming round to the view that only a serious dose of noro would shift my spare tyres. Sigh .

bigTillyMint · 05/01/2013 10:05

BDSad

BIWI seems to be saying no fruit and hardly any dairyConfused I love both, so not good for me!
Herbs, do you think your lite version was really just eating more sensibly?
And MrsS, that is my other problem - I know that I will have several meals out/buffet type do's etc, where low-carbing would be pretty tricky / unpleasant.

Maybe I should sign up for WW insteadSmile

I just put on a pair of jeans which really should not be quite so snug. Ahem. And I am trying to put off a much needed haircut till I get another pay cheque. Which may be some time. OTOH the Inferiorettes are hoovering my office (before playing Sylvanians in it).

Send the corked wine here, ruby - I know a couple of old gits who would probably love it.

Yes, sorry about the funeral, BD. I think it is a comfort to the bereaved to have so many people there though. When my Dad died, the crematorium was standing room only, and my Mum thought not many would come. (Hers may be a bit different though, as she has fallen out with most of her friends and relatives.)

alto1 · 05/01/2013 15:41

Afternoon all. It's taken me a week to get over the New Year bug, not helped by finding dh had forgotten our wedding anniversary again Sad.

I must be recovering because the tidying urge is creeping up on me (it won't last). Perhaps I'll take dog out and try to walk it off Grin.

CointreauVersial · 05/01/2013 15:58

BTM - the strict phase of low-carbing is designed to kickstart things and only lasts for two weeks. Thereafter you can eat fruit again.

That's how I started off, but for the last year I've been following the "relaxed" approach, just cutting out the obvious stodge. It depends what works for you.

I found WW to be utterly joyless, tbh......

bigTillyMint · 05/01/2013 18:52

Just been reading the article in the Guardian mag - trying different diets for a day... He lost 8lbs in a week! But it sounded pretty awful...

Holy cr@p - visiting child (delightful) informs us DD1's school starts at 10.50 on Monday. Fortunately DD2's lot have an inset day so I've sorted DD2 and DD1 could go there (girl in that family goes to DD1's school in any case...) but already my head is starting to spin. We also have an unspecified parents' evening on 16 Jan and I'll have to negotiate with work about going to that and they're not going to be wild especially as I'm leaving at lunchtime the following day to bog off to Paris... (I'm paid by the day, and won't be working on Fridays anyway so allegedly this shouldn't matter at all but I bet a Fuss Is Kicked Up)

herbaceous · 05/01/2013 20:06

BIWI and her bootcamp scare me to death. It all seems a little... fanatical.

I tried to make my lo-carb-lite a bit more than just 'eating sensibly', which never seems to have much effect. I guess instead of having toast with my soup, I'd have salad. And instead of having a ham salad sandwich, I'd have ham, avocado and nut salad. With mayo. Stuff like that.

I also found cutting out most wheat stopped the indigestion I've been suffering from for years, much to my annoyance. I've got a very 'stuff and nonsense' attitude to food intolerance, and was dismayed to realise I might have one!

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/01/2013 21:25

Salad with soup? But you can't spread butter nice and thickly on salad and dip it in the soup so that it goes all nice and melty. I think I am a lost cause. I was in hospital on a drip and nil by mouth for 10 days, with a nice enema every day once I was unable to er, evacuate on my own, and lost half a kilo. Even the nurse was bemused - she kept fiddling with the scales and saying "this can't be right."

MI - the DDs' school does that when they are going on a school trip - requires them to roll up an hour later or something and specifies that they are not allowed to take the school bus on that day, but must make "alternative arrangements." I get very snarly at that point.

bigTillyMint · 05/01/2013 21:31

Result, ruby!Wine

MI, my DC have a whole INSET day on Monday. They are going to be home-alone as DH and I are straight back into itHmm

I have to say, after years of thinking that fats are bad, the locarb mantra seems hard to swallowWink Plus I had it drummed into me that you have to drink lots of milk for calcium and eat lotse of fruit for vitamin C.... Infact, if I had to give any foods up, it would be eggs, red meat and fats. Not a good start!
