Tell me your waist-hip ratio- shocked.

I've always considered myself slim as my BMI is 19.4, and I'm a size 10. But was doing some calculations yesterday and found my shape puts me inthe apple category- and at risk of heart disease, diabetes etc.

I've been battling with a few inches round my waist for some time - used to be 24 inches when i was 21, now a whopping 29. My hips are 35-35 so this makes my ratio 0.82 (Divide waist by hips.)

Evidently anything over 8 is the Shock danger zone, and 0.75 is the Marilyn Monroe desirable figure.

I am now trying to lose 3-4 lbs that will take me back to where I ought to be.

Don't worry. I just happen to have a biggish backside, but my mum did. At least the benefits for me are that it is healthier than being an apple.

This thread is old, but I seriously need to clarify.

Waist to hip ratio (WHR) determines how attractive you are to men, with .7 being ideal.

Waist to height ratio (WHtR) is a better indicator of health than BMI, with the healthy range being between .42 and .48.

So, divide your waist by your height to get the latter.

I am a size 6, 164 cm and have no idea what I weigh, I don't care.
I have always being rectangular shaped.,no waist at all, no bust, wide rib cage. I think my middle is a 27 and my hips 33

Delatron · 30/11/2018 17:48

I have very narrow hips (about 31/32 inches). I used to have a 24 inch waist (I think it’s about 26 inches now) So it’s my hips that let me down. I don’t think I could get my waist any smaller, I’m only 8 stone 8 as it is and 5ft 8. So wouldn’t be healthy to loose weight? I exercise about 5 days a week and run lots.

25 inch waist and 33 inch hips. Ratio is 0.76. I have no excess fat around my waist to grab really.

sizzledrizz · 30/11/2018 18:04

Mine is 0.69, 25"waist and 36 hips. But I'm 5ft 5 and 58 kg. I'm very muscular part from hips and thighs

Dying to do my measurements now!

This is very very old news and also it is true.

Not had time to read 5 pages.
But the guide is that your waist should not be more than half your height (in inches.)

So if you are 5 ft 2", which is 62 inches, your max waist for health should be 31 inches.

This is because fatter waists are usually a sign of visceral fat which is linked to diabetes and heart disease.

Bloody hell- just posted on a 6 year old zombie thread. Who started this again? Shock

I'm surprised at all the people saying this is rubbish. It's been known for a while that it's healthier to be a pear shaped woman than an apple shaped one. I also thought the change from pear to apple at menopause was one of the things that made older women more susceptible to certain illnesses.
It's also been said for a long time that a waist over 32" puts you at higher risk of diabetes. Last time I measured mine it was 33, which makes me high risk even though I'm safely within the healthy weight range.
My hips were 39 when I measured so that also puts me in the unhealthy ratio.
Another measure is to check whether your waist is half your height.

Apparently I'm an avocado according to this www.thecalculatorsite.com/health/whr-calculator.php
