Tell me your waist-hip ratio- shocked.

I've always considered myself slim as my BMI is 19.4, and I'm a size 10. But was doing some calculations yesterday and found my shape puts me inthe apple category- and at risk of heart disease, diabetes etc.

I've been battling with a few inches round my waist for some time - used to be 24 inches when i was 21, now a whopping 29. My hips are 35-35 so this makes my ratio 0.82 (Divide waist by hips.)

Evidently anything over 8 is the Shock danger zone, and 0.75 is the Marilyn Monroe desirable figure.

I am now trying to lose 3-4 lbs that will take me back to where I ought to be.

I always thought "waist" was the smallest circumference place, too. Confused

Smallest = 27" about 3-4" above my belly button.

1" above belly button = 30" for me (best I can measure with whinging 4yo underfoot). So quite a difference.

If Hips isn't the fattest place around your bottom then what is it? Where the bones protrude?

Ephiny · 09/11/2012 21:31

An inch above my belly button is pretty much touching my ribs.

Surely your waist is normally smaller than your ribcage (mine is, anyway) so 'smallest circumference' should work?

Themilkybarisonme · 09/11/2012 22:14

Wow, this thread eliminates the unnecessary Stealth from the phrase Stealth Boast Grin

Like anything there have to be exceptions. Trained singers often have over developed intercostal muscles which lead to a much bigger waist.
Not me, by the way.

Bunbaker · 09/11/2012 22:22

My waist to height ratio is 40%.

B1ueberryFields · 10/11/2012 09:39

wow. you must be thin? mine is 47. something. I think that my waist is thick.

MissBoPeep · 10/11/2012 10:01

3 inches above your belly button? That's madness :)

I've read quite a bit about this and most drs say an inch above / or in line with your belly button.

lljkk · 10/11/2012 10:11

6" from my belly button to rib cage.
8" from belly button to fattest part of my bottom.
But only 3" from belly button to the circumference that runs thru my hips.

I mean if "waist" has to be 1" above belly button then "hips" must be some rigidly prescribed distance below the belly button too, right? What is it?

Assume it's 3" below belly button. Then my measurements are 29" waist & 32" hips. I'll never buy jeans that fit on that basis, though DH might.

Maybe that 1" above belly button thing is FOR MEN?

MissBoPeep · 10/11/2012 10:29

When I measure my hips I measure round the fattest bit- for me that is very low down- lower part of my bum joining onto my thighs. I don't have big hips and measuring the widest part gives me 35 inches.

almapudden · 10/11/2012 10:49

Mine's 0.7. I have a narrow waist and, ahem, child-bearing hips (actual measurements: 27" waist, 39" hips. I'm 5'11").

almapudden · 10/11/2012 10:57

I eat a lot of cheese and fatty meat, though, so I probably have too much internal fat :(

LtheWife · 10/11/2012 12:37

Wikipedia of all places shows where to measure. If you're an hourglass or pear type figure it's the narrowest point of the natural waist and the widest point across the buttocks. For those with a more apple shape it's approx 1 inch above the navel and at the greater trochanters (the bit of bone that sticks out at the top of the femur).

MissBoPeep · 10/11/2012 12:52

Surely it's where most trousers and skirt waist bands sit? No one wears their trousers mid way between navel and bust unless you are wearing trousers with braces to keep them up? Obviously there are " belwo the waist" jeans etc which sit below the belly button, but you are kidding yourself if you think your waist is just under the bottom line of your bra.

VolumeOfACone · 10/11/2012 13:13

Mine is .86.

I am pregnant though.

GobblersSparklyExplodingKnob · 10/11/2012 13:31

Fabby waist to height calculator here

You turn the dial to make yourself fatter ot thinner Grin

MissBoPeep · 10/11/2012 13:49

haha like it. But shouldn't they differentiate between men and women?

lljkk · 10/11/2012 14:05

"Surely it's where most trousers and skirt waist bands sit?"

That's 3" below my belly button on most jeans (not supposed to be low rise ones). I measure ~33" circumference there.

I just dug out my "Sexy high rise" recent purchase jeans from Next. They come up to 1.5-2" below navel. 31-32" circumference.

If I wore ordinary low rise jeans I guess it would be ... 33-35" circumf?

I am aware my measurements aren't matching up on this thread from one measure to another. Probably a pre-post meal thing.

SufferingLampreys · 10/11/2012 14:16

Mine are 30 waist 44 hip
The 30 waist sounds bigger than a lot of people but throw in that I'm tall and my stomach is flat enough it's just another example of how we are all different shapes regardless of fat

SufferingLampreys · 10/11/2012 14:17

I prefer people look at me in profileGrin

MissBoPeep · 10/11/2012 14:32

If jeans are too complicated then make it where your skirt waistband sits- that can't be 3 inches below your navel.

LtheWife · 10/11/2012 15:22

But clothing waistbands change with that years fashions don't they? It's not all that many years ago that waistbands were so high they did sit at the natural waist.

I'd have thought that as the whole point of the waist hip ratio was to indicate the amount of fat surrounding the organs in the peritoneal cavity, the waist measurement would need to be fairly high up so as to avoid the pelvis but not so high as to be measuring around the ribcage.

From what I can see from looking at various medical papers though, even they can't agree on where exactly to measure. Which kind of makes the whole process pointless doesn't it?

lljkk · 10/11/2012 16:05

I think waist:hip best used as statistical screening tool, just a starting point.

Skirts are something I try to avoid. They can sit high or low, too. I just grabbed 2 out of wardrobe, 28" to 33" waist. Anywhere between 3" above or below navel. Elastic, you see.

bishboschone · 10/11/2012 17:22

My waist is 26 inches and my hips 34 . I have always had a ten inch difference between the two when thinner and fatter ( post pregnancy ) . Will try and work out ratio.

bishboschone · 10/11/2012 17:23

0.76... Hhmm

Bunbaker · 10/11/2012 17:35

"wow. you must be thin? mine is 47. something. I think that my waist is thick."

Slim not thin. I am 5'7" and have a 27 in waist. My waist is about 1" above my navel.

scripsi · 10/11/2012 17:46

am slightly perturbed that I am a size 8 but apparently I have an unhealthy waist to hip ratio (I have very narrow hips). Hmmm, wonder if I have issues with internal fat
