PUFFA coats- are they really "nice"?

They seem to be all over- but when I had one about 10 years ago DH hated it and said I looked as if I were wearing a duvet. I gave it to a charity shop.

No, they look scruffy and awful.

FrightRunScream · 28/10/2012 16:43

But a proper down one is so warm.

BedHog · 28/10/2012 16:48

They do look a lot like the insulation jacket from a hot water tank. Not the most flattering of garments.

SilentMammoth · 28/10/2012 16:48

That's as may be (channels mrs patmore). Theres no excuse for letting yourself go though dear.

dreamingofsun · 28/10/2012 16:49

you'd look a right prat standing shivering beside a football/rugby pitch or walking your dog in a pure wool high end fashion jacket, dry clean only thing though.

SilentMammoth · 28/10/2012 16:55

I'd look naice though.

HellonHeels · 28/10/2012 16:58

I've been pondering a down coat for a while. It's the casual coat thing I haven't managed to negotiate. dreaming you have nutshelled the issue for me. I've got a lovely long fine wool coat but no warm casual coat, only hiking jackets.

Someone linked to the Boden down coat a few days ago. Am tempted.

dreamingofsun · 28/10/2012 17:06

hellon - suggest looking on landsend website, who this morning had some really cheap down coats in the outlet section. i have a range of coats for different purposes. if you don't pay much for it you won't care if you only use it ocassionally when conditions necessitate.

i also have a 25% off code FF25PC

Beamur · 28/10/2012 17:12

I have a down Rab. Suspect I look like a black Michelin man in it - but when it's cold I really don't care.
You can buy some better shaped ones though that are less puffy. No good in the wet though.

Annianni · 28/10/2012 17:26

I have a chocolate brown long gap one, had it years. It only gets worn on cold snowy days.

I don't care about looking like a michelin man either, I want to be warm.

suburbandream · 28/10/2012 17:31

They are hideous, but they are soooo warm! I have one and also look like a Michelin man, only wear it when I'm too cold to care Grin

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 28/10/2012 17:36

I have one of the ultra light down jackets from Uniqlo, which is ver' stylish Wink

ninah · 28/10/2012 17:38

warm yes
nice, no

snowmummy · 28/10/2012 17:44

I swore I'd never get one, but I do have one now. Its warm, light, fitted and ok, not what I'd choose to wear on a night out but for tramping around the woods in freezing weather with small kids, its great.

dexter73 · 28/10/2012 18:47

Stood by the rugby pitch this afternoon - I love my puffer coat! It was cold and wet but I was warm.

TellMeLater · 28/10/2012 19:14

They look awful but jeez their warmth will win me over every time, I call it my duvet coat and I love it beyond all that is stylish and I comfort my self by thinking that looking freezing and hunched over isn't that attractive either.
I will venture outside looking like the back end of a bus for now and I will unveil in spring time looking all slim and stylish and people will gasp at my beauty! Smile

Alltheflowers · 28/10/2012 19:20

I just bought this one

www.zara.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/uk/en/zara-neu-W2012/269183/827340/PUFFER%20JACKET%20WITH%20FUR%20HOOD

It's lovely and surprisingly flattering

cornybeefhash · 28/10/2012 19:24

I bought a nice one from whistles

HellonHeels · 28/10/2012 19:42

Thanks for that Lands End link dreaming and the discount code. I like a couple of those coats, there's one with a belt that looks a bit more shapely than some.

ProPerformer · 28/10/2012 19:47

I have a lovely designer puffa from about 10 years ago.... It l

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 28/10/2012 19:49

I also have a RAB. Not the most flattering item but I wear it every and all winter and am toasty warm. (Rabs are mountain jackets , expensive but really do keep you warm no matter what)

Combined with wellies and a naff wooly hat I suspect I am never going to be a fashion icon... Grin

ProPerformer · 28/10/2012 19:49

I have a lovely designer puffa from about 10 years ago.... It looks passable and is sooo warm!! Only wear it in the snow or for fireworks etc.... Still looks as good as new and has detachable arms so can also use it as a body warmer. Cost me (well my parents) about £80 at the time (reduced from £200 as was in a spring sale) worth every penny!

SomethingOnce · 28/10/2012 20:44

The polyester ones are static-y as hell.

FrightRunScream · 29/10/2012 18:50

I have a Rab that is over 15 yrs old and has had hard service! Still more than serviceable. Never going to be stylish, but fabulously warm. Used more for hanging out in playgrounds than climbing mountains these days. But it does date from the days when Rabs were made by Rab (Carrington ) himself in a lock up in Sheffield and not mass produced in China.
