How can I get hold of nice, cheap, good quality clothes?

I currently live in one pair of jeans and a couple of skirts. We are skint with moving, I badly need new clothes, not least because I have just touched thigh through my one pair of jeans on my inner leg. What can I do with a budget of minus figures? Shock Smile

Charity shops, definately.

welshboris · 28/03/2006 18:23

Not sure what your "style" is or age, but New Look do quite cheap stuff, modern, or classic pieces

noddyholder · 28/03/2006 18:23

ebay charity shops car boot sales?I buy all my clothes(nearly)from these Ebay is especially good for quality things I usually enter the shop name or brand and see what comes up rather than skirt top etc as there are too many to wade through hth

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2006 18:27

Ebay is fab I agree. Just have a browse, you will certainly be able to find something you like, whatever your style is.

Flossam · 28/03/2006 18:29

Thanks. Had a feeling the answer might be ebay. Will have to wait a week though I reckon, onc4e we are moved. Smile

mazzystar · 28/03/2006 18:32

tescos?

Flossam · 28/03/2006 18:36

No Mazzy star, I don't live in tescos. Wink

I am in London till the weekend. Could get to Bethnal green quite easily - what day was market day, do you remember? Smile

I do sympathise, since we moved to our house, money has been tight too, esp since we did some building work, etc. I've really clamped down on nice and new things for myself
My dh bought me 2 pairs of jeans from a market last year, both for a fiver. I love them and am wearing them to death.
TKMaxx? H&M are cheap, practical and some nice enough stuff too.

Peacocks and Ethel Austin do cheap clothes which are OK. 'And Primark. George at Asda. Sainsburys.

Had an emergency last week and needed some cheap trousers for ds2 who had spilt milk all over him. Got some in Ethel Austin for £2 and ended up buying some cheap tshirts for ds1.

they do adult clothes too.

tipsyzebra · 28/03/2006 18:45

But charity shops are greener (back to why we need a green topic on mn).

Surfermum · 28/03/2006 18:49

I've got a couple of pairs of jeans in the past years for about £3. If you're a size 10 or 12 there will be loads to choose from. I've also got work trousers and a jacket for £1 each. Charity shops are great!

mazzystar · 28/03/2006 18:49

flos Grin i think it was tues and thurs...but it was ages ago, owuld hate you to have a wasted trip. petticoat lane and brick lane shops might be worth a go?

crazydazy · 28/03/2006 18:52

Primark is fantastic for cheap clothes, I got a lovely going out stripy top which is black and white and strappy for £3.00.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2006 18:52

Matalan is fab for trends and kids' clothes.

GDG · 28/03/2006 18:53

I think usually you get what you pay for and I have found Primark stuff nasty!!

You can get a few nice things in Tesco. Don't live near Asda so not sure about George.

NomDePlume · 28/03/2006 18:54

God, I HATE Primark.

LIZS · 28/03/2006 19:00

M and S have a sale on now, up to half price, as will most of the high street in the next week or so. Some of their basic clothing is very reasonable if unexciting.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/03/2006 19:18

I shop at Primark, Poundstretcher, New Look and (drum roll) Peacocks. I am very discerning though.... I can sort through a whole shop of crap to find the one decent thing Smile
Asda is good too.
Tesco are variable
Peacocks and New Look is where I would start

Flossam · 28/03/2006 19:19

I think the problem I have is that I have tried all these kind of places, and often find the clothes shrink. I might give ebay a go and I haven't tried tesco for a long time. Can get there easily too. Matalan, Primark and peacocks have not be worthy investments. I am getting fed up getting through my clothes at a great rate of knots! I am also not very good at charity shop hunting either. I am not sure I live in the best area Wink but worth a quick look. I've been buying my books there, but found some were trying to sell run of the mill paperbacks for 3/4 quid. Put me off again a little really.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/03/2006 19:21

nope, charity shops are NOT bargain places anymore, ime.
I don't look at clothes as investments. I get fed up after a while anyway
I have always foind New Look and Peacocks to be fairly good quality

yomellamoHelly · 28/03/2006 19:26

I would say m&s. They do some basics for silly money - and I don't feel they're going to fall apart tomorrow either (which I always worry about from other places). My trousers were £12 (bought few days ago), my shirt was £8 (bought few months ago) and tank top £10 (bought las month). I think I look quite presentable too. They do jeans for £8 at the mo too.

Flossam · 28/03/2006 19:54

Yes DP found some mens jeans at the weekend, while he was out. Told him he had to wait to buy them though!! Grin
