Best handcream?? for dry overwashed hands!

Can anyone recommend a hand cream, preferable cheap good value and one that does the job. I wash my hands regularly, unlike 38% of women apparently Shock but this leaves me with dry flaky nails and hands that resemble a 90 year old. Is there one you can't live without? If so, please share Grin. I'm going to treat myself to a full-on hand pamper later!

Neutrogena I've noticed that all the medics in the family use the unscented version and they're forever washing hands.

And another vote for The Body Shop Hemp one! It's the ONLY one that corrects my hands when I've been cleaning loads.

TapselteerieO · 16/10/2012 00:12

I agree about making sure your hands are completely dry after washing. Also give them a really good rub all over to re-stimulate the natural oils. I use suma/faith in nature hand soap - less nasties in them. (stick a beer bottle top in the base of your soap to stop it splitting when it dries out)

My hands are very dry today, and get worse through winter, so protecting them as much as you can from extreme cold/heat will probably help. I have never found a moisturiser/hand cream that works. I generally avoid washing dishes/cleaning without gloves.

Norwegian formula (unperfumed one) was the only thing that sorted out DH's chronically dry skin on hands especially around knuckles which would get sore.

therealmrsk · 16/10/2012 12:55

thanks! I might try a few of the suggestions and look forward to having lovely soft hands and nice nails! Grin I'm also on a hunt for a particular colour of nail varnish. Not beige, not nude pink, not grey, but a mixture of all three...does this exist?

I like Soap and glory's hand food. Don't think its been mentioned yet but its a good one!

AlwaysOneMissing · 16/10/2012 19:40

I have tried loads on the Market, as I suffer with dry and cracked skin on my hands.

The most effective is Neutrogena Norwegian Formula. It's actually more of a balm than a cream, and soaks in brilliantly. It's cheap too!

As an aside, handwashing should be done with hot water - cold water is not as effective.

SunshineAndSand · 16/10/2012 19:43

I've been using this Dove one.
My hands were in a terrible state, dry, peeling, then cracking! But this has been great - I keep one downstairs in the living room and one by the bedside - hands have never felt better. Cheap too.

caffinequeen · 16/10/2012 19:58

Body shop hemp here too, or Burts Bees almond (that's greasy though, so not good as an all day every day one). If you can though try & switch to a bar soap instead of liquid soap, far less drying. I use Simple or supermarket equivalent, the fewer ingredients the better. It's cheaper too!

tricot39 · 16/10/2012 23:09

Atrixo - but it must be the barrier one and NOT the one in the yellow and green tub which is not as good. The barrier one takes some finding.

Also get unscented cheap vegetable oil soap and your hands will get less dry to start with.

Another vote for Neutrogena Norwegian formula. Worked for me when I was spending all day counting haddock in refrigerated rooms on fishing vessels.

greenhill · 17/10/2012 11:54

I use the Body Shop Hemp hand cream too. A little goes a long way.

Try and use rubber gloves for housework and if your hands are very dry it is probably worth changing your liquid soap / body wash too. I find that anything by Cussons Imperial Leather dries my hands immediately and their shower gel dries my skin too, even if it claims to be moisturising, I don't believe it.

L'occitane, Clarins and the Body Shop are generally the best moisturisers.

Schmaffy · 17/10/2012 12:39

Another user of Body Shop Hemp or Neutrogena Norwegian formula here!

Fairylea · 17/10/2012 12:44

I've tried loads and worked for clinique and I still think Aldi 70p one is the absolute best !!

FireOverBabylon · 17/10/2012 12:57

Your beige / pink / grey nail polish you don't want a lot do you? Wink

Would any of these do?

Porchester Square
Pale soft toffee
OPI
Earthen

valiumredhead · 17/10/2012 13:20

Free L'Occitaine hand cream with this month's Marie Claire mag.

therealmrsk · 17/10/2012 16:24

Oooooh I love the Porchester. I know I'm greedy with my nail polish needs!

Maybe this needs a new thread, but what do you think about glittery nail art for a 39 year old?

this is my favourite for nails.

Mewsical · 17/10/2012 20:10

Hmmm..use the filter and choose the nude group for about 8 options. Nude beige is fairly greyish on my nails too.

PackItInNow · 17/10/2012 20:27

I go to Poundland and use their Derma Anti-Wrinkle night cream at night and their cracked heel cream during the day.

ceeveebee · 17/10/2012 20:39

Since I started using aqueous cream to bath my twins I haven't had to use any handcream, my hands are really soft all the time
