Always remember laughing at noddyholders posts about her mum and her penchant for silver chunky jewellery and flicky hair.

what item epitomises your mum?

My mother looked like Audrey Hepburn when she was young - the thick, dark up-do with heavy fringe; small onyx drop earrings; tie-waist blouses with capri pants and flats... Envy

She's nearly eighty now and has still very much her own style - many of her clothes home-made in wonderful prints and luxurious fabrics.

She wears wide-leg trousers with buttoned 'sailor' waists; silk chiffon blouses and tunics with almost elbow-deep cuffs with self-covered buttons; boiled wool blazers. She also has a selection of Breton caps in velvet and corduroy - they look fabulous perched at a jaunty angle on her now almost white hair.

Oh - and about half a hundred-weight of lovely antique costume jewellery. I can't keep up. Sad

lurkerspeaks · 15/10/2012 22:11

My mother's clothes are eeeek. Knitwear with a big design (ie oversized argyll) is my current hate. I'm not sure if she ever had good taste but it has all got worse as she has got older. She has worn some seriously bad outfits to functions (eg. my graduation) and will need careful monitoring if she ever gets to do mother of the bride/ groom.

Her sister (my aunt) on the other hand still looks lovely - she dresses in keeping with her age (mid 60s) but in an attractive way - smart wide legged trousers, longline cardigans, nice blouses (often liberty/ laura ashley florals) sensible shoes (ecco do well out of my lot) . Her choices for formal functions (and she goes to a fair few courtesy of my Uncle's job) are always spot on....

YouOldSlag · 15/10/2012 22:12

doin- my Mum refers to herself as "Your Mother" too! (would that be third person or fourth person/)

i.e

I bet Your Mother has shocked you now. Your mother's gone and bought herself a dog/goat/new car.

or
Your mother's been run off her feet
etc etc ad nauseum

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 15/10/2012 22:23

My mum (who is 51) has great dress sense :) she has some truely amazing shoes and bags
Unfortunately, a lot of the time she wears decorating clothes, as she spends a lot of time doing various DIY...?

My MIL is not yet 50 (shocking teenage mum!) and lives in bootcut jeans and mumboots Grin

duchesse · 15/10/2012 22:26

My mum is knocking on 73, looks 60ish and lives in France. She is very active (plays competitive swin golf- a peculiar kind of golf it would take too long to explain) and dresses very stylishly, far more stylishly than me. Her mantra to me growing up was "You have to suffer to be beautiful", to which as a child I always answered "I'd rather not be beautiful then", a maxim I have stood by as an adult- if it hurts, it can go and take a running jump. My mother would rather mutilate her feet than wear non-stylish shoes despite possessing the family wide foot, I would rather never do anything to damage my feet in the first place which is why I never wear anything but comfy fitflops

IvorHughJackolantern · 15/10/2012 22:32

Talc your mum sounds gorgeous Envy I would so love to be chic

joanofarchitrave · 15/10/2012 22:34

A kilt with a white poloneck and a fag.

To be fair, this was my mum in 1968, not now. There are a lot of photos of her in this getup though.

LilQueenie · 15/10/2012 22:49

Smile shirts or tshirts with comfy bottoms but then so do I on days when Im wiped. Id kill to look like she did at my age. Skinny jeans, shocking electric pink ones or skintight black, hair done and to me perfect. didnt give a toss what anyone thought just what she felt good in. Then again it was the eighties.

doinmummy · 15/10/2012 22:52

YouOldSlag I wonder if it's a regional thing.

My Mum still says 'Give yer Mother a kiss then '

DontCallMeBaby · 15/10/2012 22:59

My mum wears nice things (including, lately, a pair of my trousers which I got too thin for, and she got thin enough for, both of us having lost weight). She has done away with overly high necklines (we are both bosomy) and replaced them with layers so no monoboob, but no crepey cleavage either. She likes a nice scarf, as do I.

She is, however, the only person in the world who looks worse in a hat than I do, poor thing.

MIL though ... she must have been about 52 when I first met her, dressed like an old lady then, and unsurprisingly still does, and not in a good way either.

BigWitchLegsInWailyTights · 15/10/2012 23:26

Joan Mine too! Grin A bouffant hairdo...mini kilt and polo neck and fag! Love it.

TiddlyZomZomZombie · 15/10/2012 23:31

Oh wow, my list could go on for weeks, but her greatest hits are:

Dressing all in one colour, usually red trousers, red jumper, red shoes and socks. There are green and purple versions too.

Anything with 'contrast' stitching

Tapered trousers in bright colours

She's gone through many phases of bad dressing which are generally led by her partners taste/attitude; quite stylish when she was with my dad, 'jazzy' ethnic tat and primary colours with first stepdad, basically dressed like a bloke with second stepdad (not a happy time), and now finally liking clothes again with her new DP but his taste runs to the tartier end of the spectrum so she has a depressingly large collection of patterned lace tights and low denier stockings (which do nothing for her skinny legs).

I recently got her to try on my dark indigo skinny jeans which she loved. She returned from her subsequent shopping trip with emerald green jeggings... Hmm

gallifrey · 16/10/2012 00:14

My Mum always looks like she is going to a posh wedding!

FrothyDragon · 16/10/2012 00:32

Pashminas. Only at family gatherings though.

Oh. And padded shoulders. She wore them up until the turn of the millenium, IIRC.

LeFreak · 16/10/2012 00:39

A dog collar

dinkystinky · 16/10/2012 00:43

Chanel no 5, m&s button down cardis, sensible mid sized heels and maggie thatcher handbags are my mums things I'd never wear. She also wears a sari at almost all times (even when iceskating) but since retiring and joining a gym has been persuaded into a pink velour tracksuit and the whitest trainers known to man. I rarely wear saris but can rock the look when I do so not ruling those out - the pink trackie and blinding trainers are nother matter entirely....

OhDearSpareHeadTwo · 16/10/2012 00:47

I would be overjoyed at looking like my Mum. She looks much better put together than I do, dresses a lot younger than her 68 years and is a size 10 compared to my 18/20 !!

When I was a lot thinner and lived at home we used to share clothes regularly - so we have a very similar style. Some of her favourite clothes are things I've bought her :)

cynister · 16/10/2012 01:03

My darling mum lives for Christmas so she can pull out all her " holiday" themed jumpers..with matching earrings.

Feckbox · 16/10/2012 01:08

My lovely mum died last year. I wear lots of her old clothes because they make me smile ( some of them are very funny ) and make me feel close to her.

cynister · 16/10/2012 01:09

I am so sorry Feckbox..I will probably do the same..

Feckbox · 16/10/2012 01:16

Thanks Cynister .I hope I have not killed the thread! My mum's fashion sense was pretty conservative but in latter years she did buy a couple of somewhat flamboyant items. I get a real kick out of wearing them. believe me, I am no fashion guru Smile

JustSpidero · 16/10/2012 01:29

Clothes-wise my mum has pretty good taste.

She's 73 and a couple of years ago bought a New Look dress and Monsoon cardi from eBay for my best mate's wedding. When she couldn't make it I ended up borrowing them and wearing them instead.

I have also managed to purloin the cream suit she wore for my wedding!

I guess I should add a Blush on the end but they are all very nice.

The American tan tights, turquoise eyeshadow, bright coral lipstick and taste in footwear leave a bit to be desired though Grin.

Pennybubbly · 16/10/2012 03:41

Am actually crying with laughter at doinmummy's mum, especially the Next conversation.

[doesn't have anything humorous to add about her own DMs fashion sense]
[thinks desperately]

VintageRainBoots · 16/10/2012 03:55

I'm now feeling exceedingly self-conscious about my attire...

valiumredhead · 16/10/2012 09:09

I'd love to look like my mum, and dress like her too - she's fab and wears lovely clothes!
