what will you NEVER wear because it will "make you your mum"

Always remember laughing at noddyholders posts about her mum and her penchant for silver chunky jewellery and flicky hair.

what item epitomises your mum?

OP posts:

My mum dresses beautifully - well cut tailored trousers and fine knit plain jumpers from places like Peruvian connection. I'd draw the line at roll necks too mind, oh and she has veered into dodgy 'comfort only' territory on the shoe front. That said if anyone can tell me where to find comfortable AND stylish plain black shoes we'd both be very happy!

Latara · 16/10/2012 09:38

My Mum always looks good so i'd look ok if i dressed like her (but annoyingly she's much thinner than me so i can't).

Xiaoxiong · 16/10/2012 09:55

My mum dresses in head to toe black most of the time, with the occasional "bright" jacket. From the ankles up she looks like Morticia Addams (complete with jet black pin straight long hair.

From the ankles down...ugh. her back went out a few years ago, so now she wears New Balance trainers. These ones (among others, equally hideous). It drives me insane, surely there are other shoes that are comfortable, supportive and flat that she could wear!?

Also she will not come to Bravissimo with me and get fitted. She thinks if you're above a C cup you're obese bangs head against wall

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 16/10/2012 10:00

Some of your mothers sound pretty stylish to me! Or at least decently dressed.

My 'will never wear' Mum-item is horrid crunchy acrylic jumpers.

sieglinde · 16/10/2012 10:01

My mother left me her Hermes scarf, pearls, Victorian cameos, and 30s gold clip earrings, (good) and her Oroton jewellery (eww, but I adored her anyway.) She had wonderful taste, and gave me all the style tips people seem to pay stupid slebby types for nowadays.

She was incredibly pretty when she was young, a real Size 2 with a 24-inch waist. She paid for keeping it with her life - she smoked like a chimney, and she died of lung cancer secondaries in the liver. Late in life, she gave up smoking and gained some weight, and let her dress sense go in awful cotton shifts.

dementedma · 16/10/2012 10:15

so many bitchy comments about how peoples ' mums dress - hope its all tongue in cheek and done by people who themselves have amazing dress sense.
My mum is 77. has had a bloody hard life and has earned the right to wear what she damn well likes and sod anyone who disapproves!

JennaLemon · 16/10/2012 10:23

I wouldnt' criticise my mum for her dress sense either. Most of her choices are good, but she has no interest in wearing shoes that aren't comfortable and that is her prerogative. When she was 7 she was given her older sister's shoes to wear and she had to wear them, for a year, even though her older sister was no longer bigger than her.

JennaLemon · 16/10/2012 10:25

.......... and when I look at it from the other side of the coin, i can't imagine dressing to please my daughter! if she approves well and good, but she's 32 years younger than I am and when i'm 70 i doubt i'll be looking for her approval!

WeatherWitch · 16/10/2012 10:30

I end up wearing most of my mother's clothes Confused. Every time she thinks that something in her wardrobe may be getting too young for her she hands it on to me, and it's invariably gorgeous (floaty knee length suede skirt and a v slinky print wrap dress, most recently). Hoping when I'm in my 60s I have her style - she's somehow managed to tread that line between not looking frumpy but not looking like mutton dressed as lamb. She still looks gorgeous in skinny jeans and French Sole ballet flats but also has a wardrobe full of elegant stuff.

Reading that back I think I may have a bit of a crush on my mother Blush. I've missed the point of this thread, haven't I?!

Craftyone · 16/10/2012 10:44

Bet most of our mums think we dress like slobs now. Sounds like lots of mums still take care and do the little things that they did in their heyday.

My mum still draws her eyebrows on! (70s chick)

JennaLemon · 16/10/2012 10:46

It's so true!! people my age may laugh at my mum's generation's shoes, but my mum said to me recently 'i can't believe you ate a bag of crisps walking down the street'. I said, er, i was eh hungry. no point having a stylish coat and shoes if you're going to be seen eating crisps in public.

Craftyone · 16/10/2012 10:48

yep! some still love the crisp gloves that say ' I have taken so much care with my outfit today'

internationalvulva · 16/10/2012 10:49

Fanjo, my mum copies what. Wear too....I will not be returning the compliment, she buys Clarkes shoes...

Ephiny · 16/10/2012 10:52

Yes my mum is probably at least as horrified by the way I dress as I am about her. She doesn't entirely approve of jeans on a grown woman, for one thing :)

Actually I'd never criticise her and absolutely think she should dress however she wants, as should everyone really. It's just not how I want to look, and because she's my mum and we have certain things in common when it comes to appearance and figure especially as I get older, I can see how I could end up looking like her if I wasn't careful!

Ephiny · 16/10/2012 10:53

Some of your mothers sound very elegant and well-dressed though!

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 16/10/2012 10:55

vulva my mum has just gone 40, I hope she doesnt go down the Clarks route Grin

Craftyone · 16/10/2012 11:02

Mums love Clarks! They are drawn to the padded squishyness and can spot a shop from 100 yards down the high street :)

InSPsFanjoNoOneHearsYouScream · 16/10/2012 11:15

My mums in the next pumps and trainers from JD stage. Is it Clark's next? Grin

BegoniaBigtoes · 16/10/2012 11:24

Oh god, my mum wears awful velvety bootcut trousers and wide gathered calf-length dresses, with ankle boots or "with-it" trainer-style ecco shoes.

The worst thing is she think she is some kind of style adviser to me, so I'm always getting told I should copy her latest purchase, such as hideous bootcut STRIPED PASTEL jeans from cotton traders (or similar) and once she actually, without checking first, brought her old naffola ankle boots with her on a visit and gave them to me saying "I've worn these out a bit really but you might like them now." Er thanks.

Think something with the wowser style points of these but scuffed and knackered too. Lovely!

AgathaFusty · 16/10/2012 11:27

This has made me wonder what my 21 year old dd really thinks of my clothes. She says she likes them, but who knows Hmm. I really hope she would tell me if she thought I'd got it really wrong.

PostBellumBugsy · 16/10/2012 11:31

Huge (as in really high) kidney warmer pants in pastel shades. I don't even know where you can still buy these things.

fluffiphlox · 16/10/2012 11:33

Oh dear God, I recognise quite a few of the things I wear. What do you advise for the mid-fifties older baggage who doesn't want to be ridiculous either by dressing too young or by looking like a bag woman?

SlightlyJaded · 16/10/2012 11:36

WeatherWitch that's lovely.

I plan to that exactly when I get old even though I am forty now which according to this thread is old already

I think the trick is that every morning, you have to ask yourself "What would a Parisian wear" and voila you are in skinny jeans and ballet flats with a floaty Mumsnetchiffon scarf, looking tres chic.

My mum does not apply this rule. She is a Per Una offender of the highest order.

scentednappyhag · 16/10/2012 11:38

Bootcut/very wide flare jeans.
Long checkered shirts.
Terrible 'dog walking fleeces'.
Big silver cross necklaces.
Tshirts with faces on.
Birkenstocks.
Fabulous platform shoes in gorgeous colours and styles.

I utterly adore her, and she always looks amazing to me.

PostBellumBugsy · 16/10/2012 11:41

PMSL at SlightlyJaded! Most of the women I see in skinny jeans and pumps certainly don't remind me of Parisians, they look like giant chicken drumsticks!
