mosschops30 · 10/10/2012 21:09

I want this one

but recently went up north and a lot of young 'less than classy' girls wearing barbour.

Whats the general feeling? I dont want to spend £170 on a trashy coat

I personally don't like the ladies ones - still buy beauforts. Have a green and a brown one and I live and die in them.
But, I didn't buy them because they look nice - they are functional for what I do and last, although not as long as they used to, them and Mascot - who were another good make have now gone downhill in quality.
As long as you don't buy one that has a big label saying 'Barbour' on the front it doesn't matter I don't think.

Worley · 11/10/2012 07:03

where are these chavs buying them then? the only place to me local is the equestrian shops or John Lewis.. unless I guess they're getting them online.. I thought chavs just brought cheap fake designer ones anyway. how has Barbour become fashionable!!

poppy283 · 11/10/2012 07:07

They're worn by Jack Wills people. I wouldn't say chavvy is the right word, more like the kids who idolise public schools, made in Chelsea etc - conspicuously aspirational perhaps?

Worley · 11/10/2012 07:33

arh yes that's more like it probably.. at least I don't own a jack wills hoody then.. I had no idea what they were all on about seeing them in those jumpers till I saw the shop. I though they were advertising their fave member of a boy band !

chipstick10 · 11/10/2012 08:05

conor. I have the same jacket. As i have stated on several threads i look like Camilla in it. It looks big and the shoulders sort of slope on it. I cant carry it off in any shape or form. Its been worn twice and i dont know if i should cut my loses or embrace it and buy a hood for it for when i go dog walking.

Inneedofbrandy · 11/10/2012 08:12

Hunter wellies are becoming chavvy as well. They are everywhere.

chipstick10 · 11/10/2012 08:17

True re Hunters but they are great for this time of year for walking my dog. I got mine years ago, so i dont care.

beancurd · 11/10/2012 08:18

Yup oop north, very much the preserve of the over made up, under dressed blingy folk.

seeker · 11/10/2012 08:29

God, I'm old! The thought of Barbour being chavvy just makes the world shift beneath my feet!

I am still reeling from discovering that wearing your shirt collar turned up is now "chavvy"!

Je suis le Chav then,Grin I've got red hunter wellies too

DowagersHump · 11/10/2012 08:44

I have a very battered one - I only wear it when it's really windy, cold and wet. It's most definitely not stylish :o

dexter73 · 11/10/2012 09:06

I think that a lot of people don't know what chav means.

MissBoPeep · 11/10/2012 09:11

They've suddenly become ubiquitous amongst people who think if they wear one they will be part of the upper classes or even the aristocracy.

Unless you own a country pile and need a 4x4 to get out of your house, then I'd steer clear.

I don't have one because I am chavvy, aspirational, over dressed, blingy, idolise public school or any other of the phrases used above. I have one because it is a nice colour, flattering, warm, good quality and I still love it after 3 years so has been a good jacket to buy based on cost per wear. People really can attach an awful lot of labels to a fairly ordinary jacket!

trixymalixy · 11/10/2012 09:23

I have a wax one with a peacock liberty lining it is lovely. I think as long as you don't buy the ones that have the label in massive gold letters on the front they're fine.

I also have hunter wellies Blush.

MissBoPeep · 11/10/2012 09:57

The problem though Dexter is that you know you aren't any of those things- but does everyone else who sees you wearing it?

IMO it's a bit like someone wearing a tiara and thinking it makes her like the Queen- then when everyone does it you can't tell who the real queen is anymore.

I have one and it's my most regretted buy in my life ever. It's black, waxed. It's also too thin to be warm, and stops at a very unflattering point on my hips. However I still wear it because it cost a bloody fortune. I was hammered into buying it by my friend and a salesperson Blush, wish I'd taken it back straight away because I regretted it as soon as I was out of the shop. Also, they are ubiquitous so I feel a bit 'uniformed' in the playground etc, everyone seems to have one.

Having said that I used to have the green waxed ones when I was doing horsey things in my youth and liked them then.

Stevie77 · 11/10/2012 10:38

"Up north"?

Because everyone in the south is so classy!

gazing into space, pondering the wonders of Essex and TOWIE

dexter73 · 11/10/2012 11:35

MissBoPeep - the thing is I don't give a shit what judgements people make about the clothes I wear.

SeveredEdMcDunnough · 11/10/2012 11:44

Get one in the sale or on ebay.

I got one half price online and the other one hardly worn from ebay.

I really like them especially the very thick, brushed flannel lined one with a furry collar.

It depends how you wear it - loads of orange makeup, posh jeans and heeled boots and you might look a bit wrong.

They are a genuinely nice item though. I don't like the quilty ones for some reason - remind me of old ladies.
