If you suffer badly with the cold in winter, how do you dress to keep warm and still look put together and stylish?

I really suffer with the cold in the winter, I have Raynauds and regularly lose all feeling in my hands and feet (and nose!). I love the summer months, I can dress for style rather than for warmth but then winter comes around and I look like a bag lady again.
How do you dress to be warm and look decent? Today, I have on Ugg boots, woolly socks, knee high socks, jeans, long sleeve t-shirt and 2 hoodies. Its only September and I'm dreading another freezing winter.

If you are in Primark check out their fleece-lined tights. They look like normal opaques on the outside, but so cosy inside. M&S have them too but Primark's are half the price and just as good.

Themumsnot · 22/09/2012 17:00

Posted too soon. Also, I got all my thermal base layers on Amazon and Ebay, much cheaper than in the shops.

TapselteerieO · 22/09/2012 17:02

Uniqlo have good woolly stuff, merino cardigans £29 aprox. They also did thermal jeans which I bought in the sale, they are very generously cut, just look like ordinary dark denim jeans, but so much warmer than jeans, and you don't have to wear thermals under them. I will buy them again in another style if they have them.

I have a silk Cardigan from Zara, I bought in the sale, which is great for warmth without bulk
Living in N.E Scotland, I decide I would rather be warm than glam & miserable!

dexter73 · 22/09/2012 19:44

I have just bought some of the heattech jeans from Uniqlo. I also live in the heattech tops and their lambswool and merino jumpers. Heattech socks too!

Mydogsleepsonthebed · 22/09/2012 19:49

Oh I didn't know you could get fleece lined tights. DD suffers a lot with the cold in the winter - would they look enough like black opaques to be ok for school?

Themumsnot · 22/09/2012 19:52

Yes, they look just like black opaques on the outside. Very toasty.

anniewoo · 22/09/2012 19:59

Yay to fleece lined tights - pretty polly do them. Where do you get the silk underwear please?

bonzo77 · 22/09/2012 20:10

Definitely agree with natural fibres. I have some ancient silk + wool mix thermals from m&s. DH has bought me some ugg kensingtons for my birthday, so much warmer and less sweaty than my old rocket dogs which are synthetic fleece. Cashmere wrist warmers (got them in the sale at Brora for £10 instead of £35). Sheepskin insoles + ski socks with wellies when wet. North face down filled parka coat. My mum has a useful tip, to change into fresh socks and slippers when You get in from the cold.

I'm now 25 weeks pregnant and the coat and some of my knitwear won't fit for much longer which is annoying.

fengirl1 · 22/09/2012 20:29

Ooh my first post in S&B! Don't know if I'm repeating anything already said, but knee length boots allow you to wear leggings instead of tights. I also wear proper wooly socks if I know I'm going to be outside (my mum knits them) and if I'm travelling in the car and am then going to be outside I don't have the heating on in the car.

accessorizequeen · 22/09/2012 21:42

Patra do silk thermals, belladinotte do silk & wool ones which are machine washable and fab

QueenCadbury · 22/09/2012 21:47

iheart what gloves do you wear? I too have raynauds and despite silk liners and north face ski gloves I'm still nearly in tears with how painful my fingers get.

CMOTDibbler · 23/09/2012 08:45

Queen, can I recommend these - they are the warmest things I have ever known. A MN friend also made me some fleece mittens with handwarmer sachet pockets so I get active warmth which are brill. If you don't want to do disposable handwarmers, the hot rox electrically charges and can be turned on and off.

teta · 23/09/2012 09:04

Brora thermal t shirts feel wonderful on-even though it is a synthetic mix.I hated the feel of the heattech tops -too synthetic.Tk Maxx at sale time often have cashmere vest/t's for a couple of pounds that can be worn as a base layer.I love the cashmere beanies/gloves that M&S do.Thermal socks are brilliant over tights and under boots.

ujjayi · 23/09/2012 09:46

You have my total empathy OP. Am also a reynauds sufferer. There are times in the winter months where my hands are so numb I cannot drive :(. And my fingers are regularly bright white due to lack of blood supply.

Wholeheartedly agree with all advice already given. TK Maxx is an excellent source of merino knits - they always have loads of Dean & White merino and cashmere which I have always found to be excellent quality. They also will start to have a good supply of Icebreaker merino ski layers which are usually v expensive (approx £80 for a long sleeve tee) but will be less than 20 quid per item. Check out the men's range too because they are pretty much unisex.

Make sure your layers are long enough. I tuck my tees into my tights/leggings and it makes a big difference - and just ignore the fact I feel about 5 years old!

accessorizequeen · 23/09/2012 10:08

Someone mentioned gloves which will fit a handwarmer. I couldn't find them on the Raynauds website, is there anywhere else to buy them? Ideal gift for my dm who suffers with it.

MWB22 · 23/09/2012 10:40

I bought quite a few thermal vests in Primark last year. Lots of good colours so they looked OK layering and varied neck lines. Some of the long sleeved ones had thumb holes to keep them down the wrist, which was great when I'm outside or at home - not so glamorous at work! They were cheap as well. I also saw some good ones in M&S. For basic colours I bought a set the year before at an outdoors shop in the ski section, but they were pricy.

I have a Landsend down coat that is SO warm and snuggly - trendy no, but I love it for to and from work, school run, walking the dog, etc. when comfort is more important than style to me.

chardom · 23/09/2012 10:42

I'm a teaching assistant and I dread being on playground duty in the winter because I can never get warm again all day. I also suffer from kidney infections if I get a draught on my back so I'm definitely ordering a Haramaki, just waiting for the site to load now! Have never heard of them before but I will be telling everyone at school about them too.

MWB22 · 23/09/2012 10:51

How do the sizes come up with a Haramaki? I'm a size 14 so will I need S/M or M/L?

chardom · 23/09/2012 11:07

I have just this minute ordered a large haramaki, MWB22 from Ukiyo-go and it says that is a Uk size 14. Hope that helps!

MWB22 · 23/09/2012 11:21

Many thanks... of to order one now. How I hate the cold winters, my back aches all the time.

MWB22 · 23/09/2012 11:22

off not of

chardom · 23/09/2012 11:24

My back is the same MWB22! Let's hope these haramaki things work1

BanoffeeSplitz · 23/09/2012 11:57

Every now & again, Lidl do an angora kidney warmer, plus other thermal underwear - decent quality (much more so than their 'fashion' clothing).

BrianButterfield · 23/09/2012 12:03

Look for running/skiing base layers at places like TK Maxx, too. I know they have them in Aldi sometimes as well. Tesco do thermal underwear now.

CMOTDibbler · 23/09/2012 14:32

Accesorise - they are here. Cheapest handwarmers ime are these. LandsEnd do gloves with handwarmer pockets too
