Good natural/organic day cream?

Tempernillo · 13/09/2012 10:02

I suffer with endometriosis and environmental toxins/chemicals may aggravate it - I have made changes to my diet and I figure in for a penny in for a pound so am also trying to phase in natural household stuff and cosmetics. May be a load of bollocks, but worth a go I figure!

So, now in need of a nice daily moisturiser that is as natural as possible, and not too expensive! I have combination skin that's quite sensitive, especially to string perfume. I use ocm at night, but need something to add a bit of moisture after my shower in the morning before I put my make up on. I use bb cream so I don't think my moisturiser would need an SPF too?

Any recommendations, or even advice on making my own?

Why not just use oil?

Tempernillo · 13/09/2012 10:29

I haven't used oil as a moisturiser as such before, I worry actually leaving it on my skin may make it greasy? I remove the residue quite thoroughly at night with the ocm, so my skin is soft but not greasy.

Although I do remember reading you could use coconut oil as a moisturiser, and I guess it will have more if a cream like consistency, maybe I'll do that! Smile

Not sure if that's best if your sensitive but plenty of other oils about you can use.

Tempernillo · 13/09/2012 10:41

What would you recommend? I just use olive oil for ocm!

THe Body Shop's aloe range is fantastic and no nasties!

SunWukong · 13/09/2012 10:55

I'm no expert, but if the olive isn't giving you any bother try that, if you feel it's not enough or too much then Google the properties of others.

I just use olive, almond and coconut for everything but then I'm spot prone and not sensitive.

Tempernillo · 13/09/2012 12:18

I'm spot prone too, but still sensitive! I have the most awkward skin in the world!Grin

Well I find coconut works, but I mix it with almond for my face.

Going to try Jojoba when I run out of whats in my little face mix bottle, because I was told its good for blotchy skin and I have red patches.

See coconut is a bit harsh and anti bac, you could give it a go, after all its cheap and can be mixed with other things, can't get any more natural then a few oils, your find the right blend eventually.

Tempernillo · 13/09/2012 18:44

How do you apply it? Very sparingly I guess? I just can't imagine putting oil on my face before make up, does it soak into the skin adequately?

Slightly off-topic but have you gotten rid of plastic kitchenware and teflon?
The plasticizers / pthalates are especially reactive when heated up and can dissolve to what you are cooking. They are quite easy to replace with chemically inert pyrex glass and steel/ cast iron.

It's very difficult to get rid of environmental pollutants at home: formaldehydes in no-iron shirts and hairspray and the fire protector chemicals on your sofa, and dioxin residues in drinking water. And yes, the spray many of us use to waterproof boots and protect bags is teflon /fluoropolymers and can actually injure your lungs.

Organic Surge do an excellent day moisturiser. No nasties and is very gentle on my sensitive skin, and it's really reasonably priced.

Housewife2010 · 13/09/2012 21:46

Have a look at Pai - www.paiskincare.com/.
Very nice products - I've tried a moisturiser & body lotion before - very natural

SuzieTee · 13/09/2012 21:52

This
www.aubreyorganicsuk.co.uk/product/90010/rosa-mosqueta-moisturiser-with-free-mask-scrub/
is the best moisturiser I've ever used and it really has no nasties at all.

racingheart · 13/09/2012 21:53

I love the Boots botanicals range. Smell great - really good range and not expensive. The rosewater spritzer is as good as ones 10 times the price, and the moisturiser is really good for sensitive skins.

Rexy · 13/09/2012 22:21

Origins skin care range is all natural and lovely too.

Tempernillo · 13/09/2012 22:52

Thanks for all the suggestions! The only one I may avoid is boots botanical, I tried some of their products in around 95/96 when they first came out, but I came out in hives and had to take them back! I know it's more than likely the ingredients are totally different now but still din't want to take the risk... But some great suggestions, will look into them! Grin

handmade naturals

These are nice. They really are chemical free - last time I tried Body Shop it was full of parabens, although that was a couple of years ago now so they may have removed them.

laptopcomputer · 13/09/2012 23:01

Trevarno, lovely stuff too

puffylovett · 13/09/2012 23:07

I love weleda rose day cream. £12 or thereabouts and lasts ages.
I also have tried spiezia and Ren products and loved them, or dr hauschka is another great brand :)

janji · 13/09/2012 23:35

Try lush? Handmade and many creams organic / natural. Love their fresh face masks and dream cream collection.

SunWukong · 14/09/2012 09:58

To answer the question i tip 1 or 2 drops on the palm dip my fingers in it and rub it round my eyes, then rub my hands together and spread the rest over my face and neck, if i have too much on i wipe it off on a towel.

And i use a bath mitt after a shower, i find i don't need a towel, i dampen the mist, put about 5 drops of coconut on it and rub it round everywhere.

SunWukong · 14/09/2012 10:04

Look at lush on the net ingredients are listed, very few are low in nastie stuff, i use their shampoo bars, there's only about 3 in the range that have nothing nasty other then sls, the seanik, shine and a red one. Only other Thing i found on there site i would use was the bubblegum lip scrub, most of there stuff has parabens in it.

Crabtree and evelyn are better as are neals yard I'm going to try that trevarno stuff wheni run out of my hand cream, currently using sanctuary spa.

laptopcomputer · 15/09/2012 08:41

Lush dream cream ingredients: "Quantitative Ingredients

Oat Milk, Rose Water, Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Cocoa Butter, Glycerine, Stearic Acid, Triethanolamine, Tincture of Benzoin, Rose Absolute, Chamomile Blue Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Lavender Oil, Cetearyl Alcohol, Geraniol, Limonene, *Linalool, Perfume, Methylparaben, Propylparaben"

Parabens and perfume, doesn't even tell you what the perfume is so you have no idea what you are putting on yourself.

ZacharyQuack · 15/09/2012 10:25

Trilogy moisturisers are organic and based on rosehip oil and are very very lovely. I use Vital Moisturising Lotion, which has SPF 15, though there is a version that is SPF-free. They also have moisturisers for dryer or oiler skin types.

Liz Earle is amazing and not too dear either.
