Bra experts-Why do my straps constantly fall down?

hugoagogo · 09/09/2012 20:23

Is it

a) the straps are too long?

b) the straps are too short?

c) the whole bra doesn't fit?

d) my shoulders are all slopey?

They seem to fit; tight, but not too tight, no double busting, middle bit sits close to chest, no armpit over hang and surprisingly little back fat.

How can I combat this problem?

I have this problem cos I have no shoulders.

Avoid balcony bras cos the straps are farthest away from the neck.

No answer ..sorry

bigTillyMint · 09/09/2012 20:28

I have mahoosive shoulders but tiny boobs and the only way I can avoid it is by tightening the straps more!

Dollydowser · 09/09/2012 20:31

I think it means its too big around the body (and therefore probably too small in the cup).

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2012 20:33

can be a number of things but for me, biggest culprit is too big in the back.

Shesparkles · 09/09/2012 20:34

I've had this problem for the last few years when I've been wearing Asda bras, I've restocked with M&S bras over the summer (yes I know a lot of people have problems with how they fit but I don't) and voila, no more falling straps!

FamiliesShareGerms · 09/09/2012 20:34

Too big round the bottom and/ or the style has the straps too far apart.

bigTillyMint · 09/09/2012 20:35

ooh, that's interesting - mine did use to be worse when I wore a bigger back size.

OlderNotWiser · 09/09/2012 20:36

I have this, and all that tightening the straps seems to do is pull the bra from my boobs. It seems no win. Wierd.

JeuxDEnfants · 09/09/2012 20:39

Have you been measured?

hugoagogo · 09/09/2012 20:42

Interesting- I have moved up to a 36 in the last couple of years as the 34s were cutting me in half. So you are saying I should have gone up a cup instead?

Trouble is though, I do have slopey shoulders and have always had this problem, I wonder if there is some contraption I could buy/fashion out of household items to hold the buggers up?

OP posts:
hugoagogo · 09/09/2012 20:44

Nope. I am not getting my tits out for strangers, no matter how many they have seen before! Grin

Too big a back size??

I went proper bra shopping for the first time in years yesterday as had got rid of children for the day( I normally hoik a 36a in with the shopping).

after trying on about 40 ( not exaggerating!!) bras in 4 different shops it turns out I am actually a 32d !!!! who would have thought it!

I have only been wearing my new size for 24 hours but have had no strap slippage and my boobs are pert and where they should be :)

justasecond · 09/09/2012 20:46

I used to have the same problem all the time and put it down to my narrow slopey shoulders. Then I discovered on MN that the adding 4/5 inches to your strap measurement was wrong. My straps do still fall down but half as much as they did before. Also ggirl is right about the balcony style bras as well.

hugoagogo · 09/09/2012 20:50

If I believed the m&s method-I would be wearing a 40A!! Which frankly would be less use than a vest! Grin

It's certainly likely you needed to go up in cup size rather than back - it's very common. VERY ROUGHLY your band size should be your underbust measurement in inches, measured pretty firmly. If you are wearing much bigger than that it could very well be the source, as the straps will be further out from the centre of the bra.

Different styles makes a difference too - I have slopey shoulders but some don't budge.

Grumpla · 09/09/2012 20:55

Definitely too big a back size!

Measure yourself in the best fitting bra you own. Measure under boobs. (eg 32) Measure around nipples (eg 36). For each inch difference = roughly a cup size so the eg measurements would be a 32D.

That would be your starting point. Then when you try that on - are wires flat against your chest? You say "close to" so I suspect not! There should be no bulges of fat under your arms / over the top of cups - if there are try going up a cup size.

Best thing to do would be go somewhere like bravissimo where they can fit you properly. Most of the staff can do this just by looking at you in your clothes! You don't have to get naked unless you want to Grin

susiegrapevine · 09/09/2012 20:59

Op go and get measured you don't get your boobs out you keep your bra on and they look at you and measure underneath to find out what your size is then get different bras for you to try on to check you are wearing the correct size by looking at you in the bra. Its only like wearing a swimming costume at the pool or something.

KateShmate · 09/09/2012 21:05

Any bra experts that can help me with an online fitting?? Grin

I have the strap problem and have read on here before people being told to go down to a smaller back fitting and bigger cup size, but I genuinely don't think it would work for me! Help!

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2012 21:17

I can try :) Can you measure yourself - firmly under the bust, and then more loosely over the widest part of your bust. Either do the overbust wearing a well fitting bra, or if you don't have one, bend forward and measure with everything hanging down!

Post the measurements and I'll give you an idea where to start

What size are you wearing just now, and how does it fit ?

KateShmate · 09/09/2012 21:22

Ahh I've looked everywhere and cant find a tape measure!!

I'm wearing a 38B - straps are constantly falling down, cup fits okay but not perfectly.
Should I mention that I only buy M&S and 38B is what they measured me as..

honoraglossop · 09/09/2012 21:27

you are probably about a 34 DD or something ( only slighly joking!)

I measure 31 underbust and 37 overbust

as i said upstream I was wearing a 36a ( I did the whole add 4/5 inches that M and S recommend)

After reading stuff on here I went and tried on lots of sizes and a 32 D ( or 30d in some shops) actually fits a whole lot better.

Get a tape measure and try some on!

KateShmate · 09/09/2012 21:33

Did anyone see the thread a few days ago? There were loads of women in 38/40 A/B and actually fitted as 32/34 D's etc.
I just can't imagine that a 32/34 would even go round me - the 38 isn't exactly loose. But maybe it is and I'm just used to it being loose?
I also can't imagine that I'm bigger than a B cup!
Thanks honor will have another root tomorrow and try and measure. Wonder if I could fashion a piece of string..?

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2012 21:33

String and a ruler?! lol.

What dress size are you? And how does the back feel - if you pull it back, can you pull it away from your body?

Do your wires sit flat against your chest?

How does the cup fit - is it gaping, slightly bulge, 4 boobs?

hugoagogo · 09/09/2012 21:37

Right I have measured-35 underneath and 43 over the booby. I'm wearing a 36E.

OP posts:
HazleNutt · 09/09/2012 21:37

I actually agree, if M&S measured you as 38B then yes, you are probably more like a 34D or DD.
