Is there such a thing as a stylish waterproof jacket?

I need a waterproof coat / jacket with a hood to do nursery run with pre-schooler and newborn. Is there an option that won't make me look like I'm off to climb a mountain? I have a trench coat for work, but I need to use an umbrella with this when it rains, which just isn't practical whilst grappling a pram and a 3 year old.

I was thinking perhaps a parka-type coat, but are there any other options? All suggestions gratefully received!

Ah, you'll be wanting the annual 'warm and waterproof but looks OK coat' thread.

Look at Merrel coats - I have the one that looks like a duffle coat but is totally waterproof too

Abzs · 06/09/2012 11:46

Jack Wolfskin. For an alternative to Merrell.

nicknicknick · 06/09/2012 12:11

Much derided but I love my Boden rainy day coat

snowrevolution · 06/09/2012 12:41

Thanks. Will have a look at all of these. Hadn't spotted the warm and waterproof thread before; will look this up!

Have several. Aigle Fetching for work, Danefae for SAHM life. Old pastel polka dots on black background H&M hooded raincoat for errr gardening and country life.

used2bthin · 06/09/2012 14:50

I just got one from seasalt, they have some tin cloth or just aterproof ones that look nice enough and I've been impressed ith how aterproof mine is (long rainy rainy day looking round a castle and I was dry under my coat)

I want a really arm coat no though so folloing this thread. Are the merryl wakefeild, aigle fetching or boden rainy day any good for winter does anyone know? Am guessing the aigle fetching is not meant to b a proper warm coat hich is a shame as it looks lovely and just saw its reduced.

minipie · 06/09/2012 16:11

I have looked (online only) at a fair few and can't better the Merrell Wakefield looks-wise.

Apart from this Patagonia goosedown filled beauty but it costs £400 Sad

used I believe the Merrells come in both insulated and non insulated (shell) versions, I assume the insulated ones are warm but not yet bought and tried.

DonaAna · 06/09/2012 16:18

Danefae does waterproof winter versions of their coats (meant for cold and wet Scandinavian winters).

Aigle Fetching is not a winter oat.

DonaAna · 06/09/2012 16:20

Coat, obviously Grin

trixymalixy · 06/09/2012 16:39

I also have an Aigle Fetching, as I got fed up with wet shoulders from my non seam sealed Reiss trench.

It has no insulation so not a winter coat, but great for Scottish spring/summer weather Hmm.

I ordered this last week www.barbour.com/womens-clothing/jackets-coats/lifestyle-womens/redesdale-parka-jacket. It meets all my criteria - its warm, it covers my bum, it has a hood, it's waterproof. I just can't decide whether it's too utility like, does it look like something you would pick up in your local hardware store? It wouldn't want to at that price but the fabric is a bit shiny and IRL the waist doesn't pull in like it does in the photo - it does on the inside but from the outside it doesn't look that nipped in. On the other hand, it looks good with jeans and long boots.

What does anyone else think?

Like the Jack Wolfskin Queens Parka.

oxcat1 · 06/09/2012 16:58

I bought the Merrell Wakefield when it was massively reduced earlier in the year. Only the insulated one was available so I went for it thinking I'd use it later in the year, but actually iy had plenty of wear in May/June/July. Admittedly it's been a rubbish summer, but I suppose my point is that the insulated one seems a good bet if you're even slightly inclined to feel the cold, as you can just wear less underneath during the transitional months.

Looks wise, many compliments!

UntamedShrew · 06/09/2012 17:07

Millie that will look nice with jeans I think but you'll need something else with dresses and tights as it's an awkward length IME. I have a lovely Barbour that is very fitted on the waist but it's not very warm.

DonaAna which Danafae do you have? Are they ok for warmth?

minipie · 06/09/2012 17:10

oh NO oxcat I didn't realise the price reduction was temporary - thought that was the cost! just looked and they are now much more than I thought Sad

minipie · 06/09/2012 17:12

Those who follow the Merrell, do they tend to be reduced in January sales?

(just remembered I am going to be pregnant till early Dec and pregnant shaped for a bit after that anyway so could hold off till then and make up for my failure to buy e)

minipie · 06/09/2012 17:12

e= earlier in the year

TruthSweet · 06/09/2012 20:25

I got this recently in Brighton when my mac decided to be a sieve instead of a waterproof coat! It's a really good length considering I am 5' 8" and 8m pg! It's not thick though so isn't a winter coat more a slightly chilly and very wet day coat but at £25 I'm not complaining.

DonaAna · 06/09/2012 20:52

Shrew have an older version of this - have worn it in -10C - +10. Very warm but not bulky. Was ideal for playground, tested it in huge downpours, kept me dry and warm. No need for umbrella.

Yfandes · 06/09/2012 20:56

alternatively, thisma be of use

Yfandes · 06/09/2012 20:57

this may

UntamedShrew · 06/09/2012 22:45

Ooh my, that certainly is um... a style I haven't considered before!

DonaAna thanks - was hoping you'd say that! I love those ones, it's got the DH seal of approval too Smile

TapselteerieO · 06/09/2012 22:55

Merrell haven I don't think it is a great look but better than a short style jacket, it has good coverage (just above the knee on me but I am short), is incredibly warm - have worn it in -15 on a walk home from school pick up. It is very waterproof, three years on at least now and really has been the best coat I have had for warmth and being waterproof.

Downsides - the sleeves annoy me a bit.

I have had Didriksons for my children, they do lovely coats for men and women too. I think they are great quality, but they are hard to find in uk, if you want to try them on in a shop.

WilfSell · 06/09/2012 23:02

Ah my special subject! Grin I still have my lovely boots wot a certain shop on the a beach sent me for that thread many moons ago.

This year, I shall just sit back and watch others do all the work.

WilfSell · 06/09/2012 23:04

PS snow, you don't need an umbrella. You need a rainhat, try Barbour, not all of 'em make you look like CAmilla Parker Bowles.
