Did you regret getting a fringe??

bounty007 · 05/09/2012 21:58

seriously considering having a fringe cut for the first time since I was 12...
If you have taken the jump, did you regret it? Do you wish you'd had it cut sooner? Slightly too scared to do it...please tell me your stories!

I love mime.

I never had to change my wardrobe either Confused

YingTongIddleIPo · 06/09/2012 08:47

Every time I mention to my hairdresser I'm thinking of a fringe she says I'll become fed up with it in no time & she's right. I have NEVER liked having a fringe, but I do get these silly ideas!

LarkinSky · 06/09/2012 08:48

Sorry for all the typos in last post.

I just wanted to add that IME a heavier fringe is easier to manage as it falls more straight, needs less maintenance, keeps its shape all day and looks more chic. Wispy side fringes are a bit meh (on me at least) and need more maintenance/straightening.

ElectricMonk · 06/09/2012 09:18

I've had a fringe since I was 11, and still remember the vast improvement that it made to my appearance once the funny parting in the middle of it had dropped out (which took about 2 weeks, I think). It was a bit too thin to start with and consequently needed styling every morning, but once I got it thickened up it became much more flattering and very low maintenance. Now I only wake up with a gravity-defying bit if I have let it get too long (it literally pings up overnight, like a little warning that I need to go to the hairdresser).

My folks put me off getting one for years in case I regretted it, and put me off getting it thickened up for the same reason, but even they agree that I look much better with the fringe than without.

YingTongIddleIPo · 06/09/2012 09:21

And, at 40 I want to show off my unlined forehead, you never know how much longer that'll last!

singaporeswing · 06/09/2012 09:39

Oh I love, love, love my full fringe, proper Dora the Explorer-esque. Since being 18, I've had one cut in pretty much every autumn & then grown it out around Spring.

Changes your look completely, makes even simple ponytails look more interesting and if cut in the right style, makes your face look a lot more slimmer defined.

Wish I could have mine cut back in (along with my long Alexa style bob) but living in the tropics means I need longer hair that's easy to throw up!

LarkinSky · 06/09/2012 10:00

I wouldn't be put off by 'you might regret it'comments either as a fringe really is quite temporary, it's not like going from long locks to an elfin crop. If you dislike it and start growing it out immediately it'll only take a few weeks before you hairdresser can blend it into a side fringe, a few weeks more until its cheek-bone length layers, and a couple of months more to be heading down to jaw length - it'll be blending into your hair within six months or so. But chances are you'll love your fringe OP so go for it!

Pastabee · 06/09/2012 10:26

I had one for about 18 months but I just got bored with how dreadful it looked if I got caught in the rain!

It was no bother to grow out though after the first few weeks and then I had it cut into my hair style.

greenhill · 06/09/2012 10:34

Is your hair dead straight? Mine is wavy, so I grew it out ASAP.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 06/09/2012 10:40

do it! It softens my face.. I like it alot.

BlameItOnTheCuervo · 06/09/2012 10:59

I love mine. It instantly funks up a 'do. I agree that a heavy fringe looks better.

YingTongIddleIPo · 06/09/2012 11:25

Could you perhaps buy a clip in to try before you commit?

LastnightDNAruinedmylife · 06/09/2012 11:42

Re wardrobes & fringes I found a lot of outfits I'd previously loved didn't look quite right any more. It changes your proportions & looks slightly more directional in terms of style.

I speak the truth (but probably spend more time looking on the mirror than is good for me).

bounty007 · 06/09/2012 11:45

where can I buy a clip yingTong??

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 06/09/2012 11:45

Yes.

I looked like a dickhead. Really unflattering.

I have got shitty wispy hair as well, always think fringes look better on people with thick hair (a la Claudia Winkleman or Jessica Biel).

noddyholder · 06/09/2012 11:46

I hated it have done it a few times on a whim! Looked groovy for a few days and then I just hated it and got botox

bounty007 · 06/09/2012 11:47

Meant to say thanks for all tips so far....my hair goes wavy in the rain so probably a thicker fringe would be better...agghhh..now I have talked about it, the idea is in my head and I will probably take the plunge....

OP posts:
GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 06/09/2012 11:47

Yes, botox is better than a fringe. Grin

TheBirdsTheBirds · 06/09/2012 11:53

Yay go for it bounty! My hair goes wavy and ringletty in the rain, but my fringe is heavy and long enough not to be affected. If you get the hairdresser to keep the outer edges of your fringe longer than the middle, about cheekbone length, it's more flattering (usually) and works well when it goes a bit wavy (a Zooey fringe rather than a wispy or dead straight fringe).

YingTongIddleIPo · 06/09/2012 11:55

They just make me look too mumsy. Not sure where you can get the clips, I think I saw one on QVC but it was £££

noddyholder · 06/09/2012 11:56

You can get clip ons from ebay to try thats what i did last time i was tempted!About £7

NickECave · 06/09/2012 13:16

I'm tempted as I have quite a long face and thick straight hair but I'm a specs wearer. Do you think they look OK with glasses?

MaidenDevon · 06/09/2012 13:45

I did it last October. I wanted to look like Claudia Winkleman. I ended up looking like Noel Fielding. It took years off me though, I looked about 14 (I'm 37). My hair grows really quickly and I was constantly nipping away at it with the nail scissors.

I had a middle parting on my one length hair, of course my fringe had a big gap in the middle when it was cut, the hairdresser told me I'd have to "train" Hmm the fringe to close the gap - this meant wetting it and blow drying it every bloody morning. Complete PITA. I started growing it out within a month.

Only now 11 months later is it chin length. Never, ever again.

I love my fringe! Mum always said 'you can't have a fringe, your forehead is too small', but I decided to take the plunge and I'm dead chuffed with it. Ive grown it out slightly and it just skims the top of my glasses. I feel quite hippyish with it.
