Are you an hourglass shape? Come tell me what suits my shape, I'm clueless

I have a newly discovered waistline and an hourglass shape. A friend has said I have a great waistline and should dress to show off my shape but I don't really know how to. My basic look is skinny jeans with a top, typically layering a vest with a zara linen tshirt during the summer. Moving into winter I was going to keep the skinnies, add brown heeled chelsea ankle boots and switch tshirts for some knits but she said I'm just covering my hourglass shape with the sort of flowing, baggy tops that seem to go with skinny jeans. So how to I dress to show off my shape? Don't want to lose my skinny jeans.

I struggle with this too. Whilst I have a waist I also have a 3 baby belly which I obv like to hide. Therefore long flowy tips are currently my top of choice.
So will watch with interest. Smile

I am not currently hourglass but used to be

Close fitting v neck knits (cashmere?) were my fave thing to show it off.

Definitely no shirt over the top of vests, closer fitting or fitted jackets and cardies are better.

IHeartWispas · 05/09/2012 08:10

I thought the basic rule was if skinny jeans on bottom then loose on top. If bootcut or similar on bottom then tight on top?

I'm not sure I'll look ok with skinnies and a close fitting top?

Isn't the hourglass meant to be the ideal shape? I think you can probably wear most things. If I had an hourglass shape I would live in pencil skirts, fitted blouses and wiggle dresses like a vintage pinup! I'd also wear skinny jeans and figure hugging and fitted tops to accentuate my feminine curves.

I say show off your shape girl!

Alas, I have no waist and hips. Sad

Hourglass is too vague a description - get yourself over to Dressipi and put in your measurements and they will recommend clothes that will suit your shape - both generic things (e.g. "Long sleeved fitted shirt") and specifics (e.g. "this dress from this shop").

singaporeswing · 05/09/2012 11:00

They say an hourglass is the perfect shape, but when you are one and the high street only makes clothes for the more pear/apple/straight up and down body shape, it's hard to find clothes that don't just drop down from your boobs and make you look massive!

Office wear and formal wear is normally quite easy to wear for hourglass figures, but the general, casual daywear is so difficult to find!

BombusBombus · 05/09/2012 11:44

Get a good bra that fits you, and wear dresses with a belt. Casual is hard to do with an hourglass shape.

I am an hourglass. I think you can wear long tops over skinnies, as long as the tops are reasonably fitted or soft fabric so you don't lose your shape.

Make sure then that you don't buy things too big: try the smaller size on first! This is really true if you've just lost weight, and can't quite believe it Smile

Obviously, scoop style necklines more flattering than high.

You can also wear a dress more casually, with belt/waist detail, boots and a little cardi. I find them easier than jackets cos of the bust fitting issues.

IHeartWispas · 05/09/2012 13:35

That Dressipi is bloody wonderful!!

Fit and flare dresses are good, in jersey/t-shirt material, they are everywhere, very easy to wear and comfortable, wear with flat shoes or boots, they look casual enough for everyday.

Mumelie · 05/09/2012 14:38

I am an hourglass but love skinnies. I hate big floppy boxy tops on me (small shoulders bit bust - I just look matronly). I pair my skinnies with longer length shirts (dare I call them tunics) or shorter dresses and belt them (skinny belt) to show my waist. Sometimes wear a long cardi over the top but with a belt you can still see your figure.
Pencil skirts are good too, but I find only practical for the office/nights out.
The only other option is bootlegs and a fitted top and I just cant go there at the mo Wink

scampadoodle · 05/09/2012 14:49

I'm hourglass & sometimes wear a waistcoat - an old man's vintagey one - over a baggy thing to give it a bit of shape. Sometimes you just want to be comfy & not have a tight belt or whatever, however flattering. Someone also said a fitted jacket: yes, I do that - wide lapels, nipped-in waist, hip length, unbuttoned over a semi-fitted top (with me it's nearly always a stripey one: I must wean myself off them!) & a scarf. Skinny or narrow trousers. That is my smart-casual outfit of choice. (I have crap legs by the way - massive tree trunks - but am 12-14 everywhere else)

SO agree about it being hard to buy clothes though. I always have to take trousers & jeans in at the waist.

Lovewearingjeans · 05/09/2012 15:54

I'm an hourglass and live in skinnies too. I tend to wear them with an interesting blouse at the weekends or for really casual a jersey long sleeved top. A trick I use is to pin open kimono style tops or cardigans with a brooch to show of my waistline. V neck tops or jumpers work well to. Vicky jersey dresses from Monsoon are super flattering and not too low cut.

minipie · 05/09/2012 17:33

Envy at all these hourglasses who wear skinnies. I'm an hourglass and skinnies look terrible as I have largeish bottom and thighs (so skinnies give the carrot legged effect).

IMO true hourglasses look best in dresses or skirts in 50s styles - so, either wiggle dresses/pencil skirt with tucked in top, or prom/fit and flare shaped dresses and skirts.

Trousers tend to be best in a bootleg or straight leg shape with a fitted top that shows the waist.

If you have both a nipped in waist and slim legs, you are very lucky, and rare IME!

IHeartWispas · 05/09/2012 18:18

Mini I don't think I have particularly slim legs, though they are pretty toned and a bit muscular, not fat. I had a lot of compliments about my skinny jeans when I started wearing them and I bought a new pair and had lots of compliments the other day when I wore them for the first time so think I must look ok in them! I have slim ankles and the skinnies and ballet flat combo seems to really work well for my ankles.

I don't really do dresses, I'm a SAHM so pencil skirts wouldn't really work for me and if I wear a dress I always have tights and they just get snagged when I'm playing on the floor with my preschoolers.

minipie · 05/09/2012 18:51

Ah ok, makes sense. Maybe I should be braver! (but then my legs aren't that toned Smile)

Agree pencil skirts are not practical. Would even thick tights (60+ denier) snag?

If you want to stay in skinnies I'd say probably a hip length top but with something round the waist to nip it in - so wrap tops would work well as would belted tops - or a slim fitting under layer with a looser/waterfall type layer over the top. I think a slim fitting waist length top on its own with skinnies would look a bit too "tight all over", and a boxy/loose top would hide your waist.

singaporeswing · 06/09/2012 08:51

Have you tried a peplum top with skinnys? They seem to be everywhere at the moment & would look good with skinny trousers. Defines the waist but is not too "skinny-skinny" all over IYSWIM.

I don't think I suit them, as I reckon I'm more of a vase (stretched out hourglass acc. to Trinny & Susannah) and my torso's too long, but it's an idea.

scampadoodle · 06/09/2012 11:40

I know skinny fashion mavens spout the mantra that you can't wear skinnies unless you've got thin legs, but I think I quite suit mine [misguided emoticon] as although my legs are big, they do go in & out and the calves are big as well as the thighs so they're balanced and I'm pretty sure I avoid the 'carrot'. I make sure mine have loads of lycra & the fabric isn't too flimsy - ones I love at the moment are Uniqlo jeggings (I know, 'jeggings' are a ghastly concept, but these are great). I just make sure all the interesting stuff is going on around my top half.
Love that Mad men look but I work from home all day & also cycle as means of transport so really not practical, even if I did suit pencil skirts which I don't due to aforementioned large calves. I wear frocks though, especially in winter when I can wear them with tights & chunky boots.

IDismyname · 06/09/2012 11:50

I'm an hourglass shape, big boobs, smaller waist but big hips. I really struggle.

So much stuff out there is cut on an empire line, so enhances boobs and skims over the rest .... NOoooooooH! Boden seem particularly bad at recognising this. I even tried out their new dressing system where I put in my measurements and it STILL suggested empire line dresses and tunics!

Longish, drapey but not clinging. I'd go for a tighter t shirt with a boyfreind cardi over the top? Show your curves but keep overall effect long?

I forgot to add I'm quite tall, which probably helps.

ScottOfTheArseAntics · 06/09/2012 12:08

I am hourglass-ish 34F/29/33. I am 42. Over the last year I have been wearing more and more dresses. Jersey dresses in particular I find flatter my shape far more than wearing two pieces which tend to make me look top heavy.

Dressipi is an excellent site. Definitely use that if you haven't already.

ScottOfTheArseAntics · 06/09/2012 12:12

this isn't me in the pic but it sums up my 'look'.
