Anyone else noticed the increased no of adults with braces

Not cannon andball braces. Tooth braces.

Yes a couple of friends have had them - there are probably more than you think as there is some new type that sits behind your teeth so the brace doesn't get seen.

Not much different to having teeth whitened really I wouldn't have thought

BonnyDay · 03/09/2012 15:56

I don't know if I could be arsed. Wonder why people leave it so late.

cost?

ujjayi · 03/09/2012 16:30

I had mine so late because of a combination of very few childhood dentist visits and in adulthood due to cost. I finally got my braces at 40 and they came off a couple of months ago. Worth every second of perceived embarrassment etc and was astounded how few people noticed and how positive they were when they did.

I did, however, notice more adults wearing them during this time but probably more because I had a heightened awareness.

MaeMobley · 03/09/2012 16:31

I am 43 and really want braces. Hate my crooked teeth.

cybbo · 03/09/2012 16:43

I had a quote to have mine done. £3000 including crowns, root work whitening and a brace

Decided against it as teeth aren't really that bad

My H is getting one though. Major deal for him

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 03/09/2012 16:51

I so want them. My parents wouldn't pay for private orthodontistry although they did for my brother and the NHS treatment I had did not make at all straight as straight as my brother's

However the cost, the pain, and my age are issues now.

cybbo · 03/09/2012 16:51

Some dentists do payment plans

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/09/2012 16:52

I bloody well need braces. I also need jaw surgery.

It was first mooted at the orthodontist about 10 years ago, but I have been to scared (and equally too vain and tight).

I think I will invest in it now I am single and don't have to worry about snogging anyone with spinach in my braces.

Bunbaker · 03/09/2012 16:57

I don't understand why parents don't address their children's dental problems when they are younger. I have a small jaw so my teeth grew crooked. I had several out and a brace at 13. I felt very self conscious, but by the time it came out 18 months later I was jolly pleased my mum made me wear it.

OhChristFENTON · 03/09/2012 16:58

Rock-on, Tommy.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 03/09/2012 16:59

Because you have to pay for orthodontic treatment for kids now - it isn't free if it is classed as cosmetic. It costs about 3 grand.

LeChatRouge · 03/09/2012 17:06

Yes, I am also interested. A surgery near us has advertised 6-month-smiles recently which I am going to look into and a friend has an invisible brace, which is like a transparent rugby gum shield that fits your teeth exactly and gradually moves them. You literally can't see it at all.

My teeth have moved since I was a teenager, I feel the investment would be totally worth it. They aren't that bad, but I would still like to have some work done.

squoosh · 03/09/2012 17:09

I'm planning to look into Invisalign in the next few months.

cybbo · 03/09/2012 17:09

Bun baker, my h , who is now 50 , was never allowed ortho treatment as a kid as his Dad said he was perfect the way he was, which is sweet in one way but very limiting for my H in another.

Even now, he insists H's teeth are fine when they're awful! So he's decided it's better late than never

cybbo · 03/09/2012 17:10

There are tiny devices you wear behind your teeth for a few weeks to straighten the odd pokey out tooth too

sanityawol · 03/09/2012 17:25

GetOrf - I had braces at age of 30, followed by jaw surgery. If you want to know anything about being on the receiving end of the treatment then give me a shout.

Not too sure, but have a feeling that we may be in a similar part of the country, so may be in same nhs trust area.

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 03/09/2012 23:12

I have got the 6 month smile fixed braces on at the moment - have had them on for just over 3 months. My teeth are already looking better but I still have quite a way to go. Had a nightmare for the first 12weeks as was at the dentist almost every week for repairs but dentist has repositioned the brackets slightly now which has helped a lot.

Costing me £2500 and I get whitening when they come off included in that price. Its a bigger deal than I imagined as they are definitely more noticeable than I was led to believe, and was very uncomfy for first 3 or so weeks, plus the breakages and endless dentist visits as I already mentioned.

I hope I am pleased with the final result!

BTW I am 33. I did have an NHS brace when I was about 12-14 but it never worked that well.

scripsi · 03/09/2012 23:30

I really want braces - my older siblings did but by the time I came along apparently "D"M "couldn't be bothered": I've been self-conscious all my life and it keeps me awake at night (I know: stupid). I am thinking of the 6 month smile or the inman aligner. Not sure I will ever be able to afford it though, I do hope it all comes down in price.

scripsi · 03/09/2012 23:34

cybbo, do you know what those devices to straighten individual teeth are? On top teeth I have only one wonky tooth (bottom teeth are a nightmare though)

Startailoforangeandgold · 04/09/2012 00:02

I believe DH told his Mum precisely what he thought about the orthodontist and that his sister could have her teeth straightened if she liked, but he was a boy. He didn't care if they were wonky.

No way can I see him getting them straightened, nor would I want him to. He's a mad techy with long hair and I would say not in the least vain (but I don't think he likes the fact he's beginning to thin on top).

cybbo · 04/09/2012 20:04

Scripsi, I'll have a google and see if I can find out. My dentist had a poster about them on his wall

cybbo · 04/09/2012 20:06

Can't see brand name but I'm there next week, will have a look and let you know

FrillyMilly · 04/09/2012 20:13

I had braces on from 18-20 followed by jaw surgery. I had to wait until 18 to make sure I had stopped growing/had all my teeth bar wisdom teeth. It was all done on the NHS though. I have a friend who had the hidden braces on recently so she was 25. I think it's becoming more common because there are more options and people are more conscious of their looks. I suppose its like any other cosmetic procedure.

scripsi · 04/09/2012 23:46

Thanks cybbo that would be absolutely brilliant. I have found general stuff about lingual braces but nothing about the little individual ones.
