Diamond and ? rings. What would you want? Help me choose?

mrscumberbatch · 02/09/2012 00:02

I need to replace a ring, I have a sapphire and diamond target ring that is now too fragile to wear. Short of replacing absolutely everything about it, it's unavoidable.

So I'm going to hide it in a drawer and look at it wistfully. But it means I need a new ring.

I like having diamonds to add a bit of sparkle but like having another stone in there as well. I'm into antique settings and uber modern contemporary out there typey things too.

What would you have/choose?

I think what threw me is that it's missing from the (3rd) photo that doesn't show the stone, and seemed to always be in the same position relative to the setting. I hadn't spotted the wonky baguette though. Maybe they switched lenses/took the back photo later. I blooming hope so for the purchaser's sake - I think you would be fairly disappointed if it is on the stone

mrscumberbatch · 03/09/2012 23:43

The third photo there's no surface as shiny as the diamond for the lens to reflect on.

Or it could be a massive inclusion and somebody's going to have a shitfit Grin

Part of the reason why my website is MASSIVELY delayed is that I dont have the patience for taking photographs and making sure that I'm not inadvertantly in the photo. Presentation skills = nada!

Shitfit, love that expression! I hate listing anything on ebay for the same reason, I have an incredible ability to end up with photos showing my toes, fingers, end of the cats tail, random toys.....

I'm was oogling the window of my local on the way home today (Goodwins in Edinburgh) - I would need to sell a kidney to buy anything but they have some lovely things.

mrscumberbatch · 04/09/2012 00:00

I think one of the best bad photos that i managed to put up without noticing, was when I took a picture of a big fancy french paste necklace. Really bling.

I did it only my swishy glass table and it caught the brilliance of the pastes perfectly.

Only once it had been put on ebay did I spot that I had perfectly framed my foot under the glass table with the necklace and that I had horrible chipped pink nailpolish that I'd been meaning to get rid of for ages. How I missed it is beyond me!

Strangely enough the necklace did sell, but I'm not sure whether they were french paste enthusiasts or dodgy foot fetishists.

There's some great shops in Edinburgh but it's hard to find a bargain. I think shop rents must be extortionate through there! (On a separate note: We are taking DD to edinburgh for the first time this month to take her to the camera obscura! Also so that we can go for lunch in the city cafe as it was our old haunt when we were young and carefree!)

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 04/09/2012 00:06

I think they are extortionate - I don't think we really have many of the quirky old antique shops left, they're all quite upmarket. Joys of living in tourist central!

Can you tell I'm a city centre dweller who is fed up of practically elbowing my way past tourists to get to the office. Festival now over :)

Silibilimili · 04/09/2012 08:35

scripsi that is gorgeous. I want one now!

JustSpiro · 04/09/2012 10:13

We went to the Camera Obscura a few weeks ago - it's really good.

Statistically - it must be a pita for you living in it, but we went when The Fringe was on, just for the CA really and spent the rest of the day moseying down the Royal Mile and even that was great fun. The atmosphere was amazing.

scripsi · 04/09/2012 15:22

Silibilimili I know, I sort of need one immediately.
MrsC what have you done to me.
My only daily ring is a full eternity ring (thin diamond band). I am wondering whether I can graduate to being a big ring person. I might have to get an imitation one somewhere like QVC to see whether I get on with it before making the leap!

slug · 04/09/2012 15:54

Ohh IsMyLastOne That Barsette ruby ring is very similar to my engagement ring!! My ring has a square diamond though.

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 05/09/2012 12:58

Oooh, lovely gemstone ladies, can you help me, pretty please? Smile DD1's 18th birthday coming up. Her favourite colour is blue, sapphires are the September birthstone, so I'm thinking of something with a sapphire in it! Any ideas? Budget is around £1k. I'm in London but the only place I've ever bought any jewels is the Burlington Arcade and I know nothing of such things. I know about Hatton Garden - is it worth a visit? All advice gratefully received!!

Big thanks in advance. Thanks

mrscumberbatch · 05/09/2012 20:01

I had an evening off last night but was still twitching to see if there was any new links on this thread Grin

I was a city dweller in Glasgow Statistically, and the only thing that kept me sane was 'Oh well, at least it's not Edinburgh and chock full of tourists'. Wink

I caved though and we're suburban now.

Scripsi- if in doubt- try one out! I was mega impressed when I was buying a cocktail ring from a jeweller I use a lot and I wasn't sure if I liked it enough to buy it- he said to take it for the weekend and see how I felt about it after that!
Didn't take a deposit or anything! And of course I bloody well fell in love with it and so had to pay for it lol.

Returnofthesmartarse. Hatton Garden is absolutely worth a visit, but I think it's really important to make sure you get something she will like if you're spending a grand. What kind of rings does she wear at the moment, what's her personal style like?

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2012 20:15

Ha ha, I love living centrally for about 95% of the year - I have a 5 minute walk to work, everything on my doorstep. But during the festival it just drives me potty, it's the way people just stand smack in the middle of the pavement (or worse, the entrance road to my house!) - yes, I know you are on holiday but this is still a working city too so please, have some consideration!

However, on the plus side - moaning and nagging has worked, and some new bling is on order! Grin

mrscumberbatch · 05/09/2012 20:35

Oooh congratulations! Can't wait to meet your new addition Wink

To be fair, I do probably stand and gawp outside your house. I'm in deepest darkest suburbia but for some reason people seem to think my front garden is public ground. It's all turfed etc and has plants but we have no fence and an open drive. Madness!

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2012 20:41

Me either! :)

Still keeping an eye out for other exciting things though!

That sounds annoying! Here, it's when you turn off the busy main road in to the side street leading to our house. It's cobbled (always fun) and has a couple of lovely old buildings which are very visible from it - so we get people standing quite literally in the middle of the road. You turn the corner in the car and they look at you as if you have just driving in to a kids playground in a tank!

mrscumberbatch · 05/09/2012 21:01

What do you think you'll go for?

Envy living on a cobbled street.

One day.......

Nothing to add but interrupting you all to say have just read thru this thread, a fascinating read.

Fabulous links.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2012 21:11

DH ordered and hasn't told me which, although I am 95% sure it's the one I linked to from PurelyDiamonds. He has worried about me getting a huge rock which would overshadow my engagement ring - haha! But I am trawling ebay looking at necklaces /pendants and earrings. I have a hankering for something with amethyst I think. Or maybe an emerald. Just a pretty bargain!

Any joy with your search?

Cobbled streets - hmm - look lovely, not so great in heels! Or when you are learning to drive for that matter :)

mrscumberbatch · 05/09/2012 21:38

Lurking... glad you're enjoying, are you a jewellery fiend too?

Statistically- if it's that one you are one lucky gal! (Although if it's not you're still very lucky to have a DH who will buy you jewellery!)

What kind of necklace/pendants are you looking at and I'll see if I can trawl something.

My search is temporarily on hold because I had an emergency splurge yesterday. Spotted a gorgeous chinese silver bowl, I think it was a bit of a bargain. I'm going to send it over to a specialist chinese antiques auction and hope that my ring budget miraculously increases Wink

OP posts:
TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 05/09/2012 21:53

Thank you, thank you, Mrs C! I wasn't really thinking of a ring - her fingers are short and tubby rather than long and elegant. So I was thinking of earrings or a pendant instead. If I get a break on Friday, I'll head off to Hatton Garden for a nosey.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2012 21:58

I'm not entirely sure - I have a ball coming up at the end of the month, and I managed to pick up a gorgeous black floor length gown to wear. But I think it will look best with an updo and fab-u-lous earrings. Definitely dangly, and not yellow gold as it looks awful on me (I'm a proper blue-white Scottish girl!)

I love the look of these - pretty but maybe at about 10% of the price! these are lovely too. In reality I'll probably just end up with some pretty costume jewellery!

OOH, I like miraculous ring budget increases they're always fun!

mrscumberbatch · 05/09/2012 22:01

They are beautiful earrings. I am getting all wistful over them. I'm going to have a wee swatch about for drop earrings.

I am also jealous about the fact you're going to a ball. All I go to is charity galas and an evening gown would be overdoing it. wistful

Smartarse... go have a look and see what kind of style you think would suit your daughter. Then come back and tell us and we'll have a bash at finding you a decent bargain online!

OP posts:
lurkingaround · 05/09/2012 22:03

Not really a jewellery fiend mrsc but I may be after this thread!!

I adore art deco stuff (including furniture) but I don't think it suits me much. I'm more of a 'roundy' person. And I also don't get this diamond fascination the whole world seems to have, I find it vaguely irritating. Although I am going to sort of succumb and get a moissanite ring (advised by you on another thread), double standards or what?!

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/09/2012 22:06

Not sure if this will work, but this is the dress. It looks better on (although I do need to dump a bit of weight first! Blush) The ball is for work, so wont be terribly exciting I suspect, but at least I will get to eye up outfits!

mrscumberbatch · 05/09/2012 22:11

Awww I loooove these french pastes. They'd be so elegant with a black gown.
