Curly hair cut short?

HumphreyCobbler · 31/08/2012 19:41

I am looking for advice about how to have my hair cut. I have a round face and thick, curly hair. It is currently growing out a rather unfortunate hair cut and looks dreadful. It is chin length, with a couple of layers. The last hairdresser thinned it out thoroughly which I thought was a good idea at the time, but basically after two weeks it started looking very strange. It is just below chin length and is only what could be described as BIG.

I normally use frizz-ease to tame it and then let it dry naturally. I like it curly. (I know, I know).

How would you describe your lovely hair cut?

by my face it is jaw length but heavily thinned out
at the back it is two inches longer. The back is v curly and thick, the front is wispier with a few layers.

I may need to have a sort of maintenance cut to sort it out.

I can see it could be a better shape if much shorter at the back

You can have it cut in at the back and longer at the front. This will instantly make the front look thicker anyway. Did she go crazy with thinning scissors or slice it?

I have curly hair and had it cut too short 2 years ago - it was a disaster! I have brought it back under control gradually. After washing I separate it into small sections and twist it using Morroccanoil to smooth it out, then leave to dry. I also tie curly hair up into a loose pineapple on top of my head overnight so the curls don't get crushed. My hair is below shoulder length and has lots of layers. Quite simple hairstyle really but I think that's the best way for curly hair!

Btw I use Barefoot Botanicals shampoo and conditioner as apparently curly hair needs lots of moisture.

HumphreyCobbler · 31/08/2012 21:51

she sliced it. It was me that asked her to thin it out, but she was very enthusiastic.

Thanks BookFairy. How short was too short? I will try twisting it in sections tomorrow and see what happens.

I think curious mamas suggestion is good, a short bob that goes up at the back, and don't let anyone near your hair with those thinning scissors again! It always looks ok when it's done but they seem to wreck the hair ( maybe because curly hair is quite dry and fragile anyway)

HumphreyCobbler · 31/08/2012 21:54

Brilliant. I have a plan! Thank you so much.

I will be on here next week planning my new slim Autumn Wardrobe. Happy Days.

Slicing can be good if done properly but not if there's less hair left on the head than on the floor! Shock

I love mumsnet. I have been getting my arse out about my crap hair for ages Blush

You might find this link useful- lots of advice about curly hair.

I have binned the frizz ease and now use the curly girl method instead ( no shampoo or low sulphate shampoos, wash with conditioner, use gel or a fantastic product like Umberto Giannini Flirty curls scrunching Jelly and dry in a tshirt rather than a towel)

A lot of hair to work with then Grin

Is it quite soft then or coarse? Or in between?

Mumlar · 31/08/2012 22:01

I too am a curly girly and find that as I am getting older, my hair seems to be getting finer and stragglier. Looks terrible today actually, but I have recently had bit of a radical cut; shorter at the back and longer at the front. The cut has given it real shape,( always difficult with curls), and it has given my curls real spring again.

I use Label M shampoos and conditioners plus the leave in conditioner and Curl Cream. I love Morrocan Oil but find on my hair it makes the curl droop so that stays in the cupboard along with the twenty other bottles of experimental products.

CuriousMama · 31/08/2012 22:02

Where do you live Humphrey? I'm itching to cut your hair Grin

nancy75 · 31/08/2012 22:03

Mumlar, you sound just like me, I have got so many bottles of hair stuff I could open a shop!

HumphreyCobbler · 31/08/2012 22:06

it is not that long. Just that ugly.

it is in good condition, quite soft rather than coarse but has got dramatically less curly since this last cut. Exactly as Mumlar describes.

I am much more hopeful now.

Aww shame, although you are near my friend Sallystrawberry (also a mumsnetter and also has curly hair) I did her hair once when we went to Liverpool to sight see get hammered. I could kill 2 birds and visit her too then dsd on the way home at Bristol Grin Sadly I'm a zillion miles away near Hartlepool.

HumphreyCobbler · 31/08/2012 22:15

Ah, well feel free to pop in one day and inspect my hair Grin
thanks for the advice, really appreciate it
