How do you wear your bras?

BedHeadTigi · 25/08/2012 18:44

Do you like to wear them super tight so you know they are there and leave bra marks when you take them off, or have them at a looser more comfortable setting? Im asking this because i have realised all of my old bras are pretty super tight on me, but my new ones are so comfortable and no way as tight but i wonder if they will still support my bust the same?

I am really struggling with this new sizing concept. I measure 31/35. I wear a 36 A or B. In fact pre children I used to wear 36AA in M&S. Have been known to have gape in a B cup. Whenever I've tried to go down to a 34 band, the cups have been far too closely set - regardless of A/B/C cup size and my boobs get the double whammy of being pushed painfully and unnaturally inwards due to the wire placement towards my cleavage, and yet also failing to fill the cup properly. Fabbo. And looking at the 32 bands seems laughable; their cups when laid flat on a table might measure "x" from the outer edge of one underwire to the outer edge of the other, but my boobs are much further apart than that. Perhaps I have wide-set boobs. But I need wide, shallow cups, if that makes sense. It's like I possess two crumpet boobs but the bra makers only cater for Easter Eggs. I do not want my boobs repositioned closer together. I want them cupped where they have grown on my chest, thanks.

Am I just a freak?

I would go to Bravissimo to get measured but there is no way they will have a bra that fits me. I will exit dejected about my lack of boobage. If I am a D cup I will eat my Oldest Mothercare nursing bra.

Gah.

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2012 01:04

I sympathise - I essentially have the exact opposite problem, with boobs which are very very close together.

It sounds like something like a plunge bra would be all wrong for you, as this will be pushing your boobs together to somewhere they don't naturally belong. I suspect you need something with much higher wires which come up between your boobs, more like a balconette perhaps. You may have tried this though.

I believe panache are good for wide boobs (makes sense as they are awful on me) and Curvy Kate are also quite wide

In terms of the sizing - it's quite common to feel like a cup gapes if the back is actually too big, as the cups aren't held up properly by the back, so they kind of fall forwards. I would say at those measurements it's probably more in the region of a 30 or 32 (I measure 31 and wear a 30) and prob a D/DD on the 30, or a C/D on the 32. But that's very rough and just a start point.

And a welcome to Haunted's cleavage (waves)

verylittlecarrot · 12/09/2012 01:40

Thanks StatisticallyChallenged. Have a mental barrier with this still. I may have to try some ridiculous sizes and report back...

PerryCombover · 12/09/2012 01:45

I need help, pronto
Breast feeding has changed my breast shape (ahem)

I no longer get a bra when the middle bit lies flat. Fitters say this can often be the case?
I measure 30/31 around ribs and 39 around norks.
Norks now resemble socks with oranges in them
I am wearing a 36f

marriednotdead · 12/09/2012 06:24

Perrycombover a 36 is way too loose in the band for those measurements, that's why the wires won't sit flat against you.

I'd suggest a 32 or 30 band and at least a GG/H cup as a starting point. Panache Tango is a good basic and copes very well with the windsock effect!
(I was going to post a link but every image seems to have the wearer in at least a cup size too smallHmm)

If you can't get to a Bravissimo for a fitting, try an independent that stocks Panache as they are more likely to know what they are doing.

hungoverandembarrassed · 12/09/2012 06:54

I have your problem very. I think I look line an a/b cup, but in fact I am a 36c as my boobs are wide! I used to get on quite well with wireless bras tbh as there was no underwire to cut in at the sides , but then equally they allowed what littl e boob I had to spread around the back! Bra I have now is very comfy, but does gape a bit at the top, but bra lady says if I scoop my boobs up in to it it win't, which is true, and build up my pectoral muscles underneath?! Also if I go down a cup I get 4 boob, so it must be right! I too an going to try a balconette next time as I have a strapless bra that fits my boobs perfectly, but obviously has no support, and it is a bit annoying wearing certain low cut things as the bra is often visible when it wiuldn't be with a plunge style...

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2012 08:16

Agree with marriednotdead, a 36 is far too big for you Perry. If the back isn't tight enough you haven't a hope of getting the wires to sit flush against your chest. I'd be starting around a 30G/GG and experimenting from there.Compared to a 36 that will almost certainly feel very tight, but if you can get it done up on the loosest hook, and fit two fingers under it, then it's correct.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/09/2012 08:27

Can someone relink the breast shape thing (I'm on my phone).

That will tell you what styles will suit wide set breasts. IIRC, look for styles which have a wide triangle shaped bridge between the cups.

Try debehams own brand. That seemed wide set to me (was one of the things I don't like about it). I have also had very wide tesco bras in the past although that was coupled with large back sizes.

PerryCombover · 12/09/2012 09:48

Mmmm
Thanks.
Bra is in no way tight. I never ever understood when people spoke about underwires being uncomfortable....Ffs
I never understood why my backsize was so large compared with friends ( no, not magic mirror) but thought that you added 5 or 6 inches and imagined they had caved in ribcages or some such.
stories would say La Price was a 36 DD or whatever and then I'd be ?

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2012 09:57

Yup, press is full of utter bollocks when it comes to celeb bra sizes, I have seen claims that KP was a 34d/dd etc - ahahahahaha. She is almost certainly more like a 28, probably even a 26 if you could buy them cos she is tiny. But probably a massive cup size - although I have also spotted that she almost always wears bras that are way too small with a lot of quad boob.

My measurements aren't that far away from yours - roughly 31/42, and I wear a 30HH (ish)

PerryCombover · 12/09/2012 10:16

Have just watched the bra putting on demonstration.
Lolling at my current bra.

The shame.
I have shuddered at Octo tit/back combos before not realising my bras were more window dressing than anything else

hungoverandembarrassed · 12/09/2012 11:04

How do you avoid back fat overhang with tight band? I suspect mine is too big, but want to avoid the back fat. Also, I really hate it that all bras in smaller cup sizes have such narrow flimsy bands that will always cut in whatever, they assume that us with small boobs are all skinny (I'm not, but then again not that fat either, size 12). I miss the massive wide bands you get with maternity/nursing bras, but they don't do them with any c cup bras that have a bit of padding. Sad

StatisticallyChallenged · 12/09/2012 11:06

Lots of scooping - I scoop from really quite far back and pull it all forward which largely eliminates the back fat. I do also where bras with 3 hooks which helps hugely.

Have you considered a longerline bra - freya do some which start at a C?

I think mine has got better - I naturally carry some tissue there so I doubt it will all migrate back, but there is definitely less of a lump under my arms

God that makes me sound so attractive!

SorrelForbes · 12/09/2012 14:01

Yep, scooping has definitely made a difference to my back/under arm bulges Grin

HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/09/2012 22:44

I actually asked for the link for VerylittleCarrot to look at styles that suit wide set breasts.

I am soooo comfy in my BraQueen 34C so measuring wasn't wrong - just the style and cut of the debenhams bra I bought - although I have to say that this is tighter in the band than the Debs 34.

I am also enjoying (in a non pervy way, and only on the presence of my own company Hmm) looking down my top at my crevice :o.

goodtimesarecoming · 12/09/2012 22:51

Right so i am 30" underneath and 37" around widest part, and I have always worn 36dd, all my bras are that size and comfortable, what should I be??

SorrelForbes · 12/09/2012 22:57

goodtimes - I would start with a 30"F. A 36 band is much too big and can't be doing the job is should be doing, supporting your boobs! An F cup sounds big I know but the volume of an F cup on a 30" back is the same as the volume of the cup on a 32E, a 34D, a 36DD.

You may need to try a FF and even a G. Be brave. Try on a 30" back to front first. If it feels tight (and yes, it will leave marks) but bearable then that is almost definitely the correct band size. Do it up the right way round and then keep going up through the cup sizes until you find one that contains everything (after scooping of course!).

Different styles and brands will feel differently so be prepared to go through this process again and again!

goodtimesarecoming · 12/09/2012 22:59

wow, well I will try, a 36 is tight though, i don't understand how 36dd's fit so well though

SorrelForbes · 12/09/2012 23:05

A 36 will feel tight at the moment as your boobs are using up all the band and cup space. Can you fit more than two fingers under the band? Have you got any back or underarm bulges? If you lean forward when wearing a 36DD and scoop all your back and underarm flesh into the cup and then stand up, do you have quadraboob?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/09/2012 23:57

I was comfortable in my 36A. I resisted SorrelForbes and Statistically challenged and others.

Resistance was futile.

I am now wearing an equally comfortable, but more shapely 34C/32D :)

HazleNutt · 13/09/2012 09:02

I though my 36DD bras fitted as well. Sure, the middle part was never fully against my breast bone and I could only wear full cups, otherwise I had to stuff the escaping boobs back all the time. But I thought this was just normal when you're a DD.

Well, it's not and I'm really a 32FF.
