How do I get beautiful underarms?

MrsHelsBels74 · 22/08/2012 19:07

I see these adverts with women with smooth, hair free underarms & think, how? Even when I shave I can still see short hairs, had a wax once & they still looked 'lumpy' and the hair was growing back after a week. I tried home epilating once & it was horrendously painful & still not brilliant.

Any tips? I can't afford laser hair removal but I wish I could.

photoshop?

D0oinMeCleanin · 22/08/2012 19:08

Dove, apparently.

Grumpla · 22/08/2012 19:10

Gaffer tape your elbows to your waist?

OhBuggerandArse · 22/08/2012 19:11

Airbrush yourself before wearing sleeveless clothes.

Hairtodayandgonetomorrow · 22/08/2012 19:23

what about that invisible tights spray you can get for legs? Would that work?

LittlePandaBear · 22/08/2012 19:58

You can exfoliate them, if they aren't too sensitive! Best to do it before shaving and they are much smoother!

SuperB0F · 22/08/2012 20:08

You do realise, I hope, that nobody in the world actually gives a shiny shit what your underarms look like?

MrsHelsBels74 · 22/08/2012 20:13

Not quite Super, I care. I couldn't really give a flying hoot what others think but I really would love totally hair free, smooth underarms but it doesn't look like it will happen Sad

My area between elbow and wrist (back of arm) is always so flaky.

My 5yo grandaughter strokes it and says "Nanna why are you so crunchy?" Blush

NorbertDentressangle · 22/08/2012 20:18

I noticed the other day that my hairdresser has lovely, smooth hair free underarms and I wondered how she managed it (just didn't pluck up the courage to ask!).

I wasn't deliberately peeking obviously, its just that she had a vest top on and was cutting my hair and surrounded by mirrors.

I put it down to her being a mere youngster (23) and having not attacked her pits with shavers, razors, creams, waxes etc for years

stoooooopidpigeon · 22/08/2012 20:23

Some people are just lucky I guess. My underarms are as perfect as they could be I suppose, I just make sure I always shave with a very new razor, don't let it get at all blunt. My legs on the otherhand always look a bit like a plucked chicken, so you can't win them all. I have noticed that deodorants make a difference too. I've used a solid stick for years and years, mostly Dove, but swapped recently to a spray (forgive me, ozone). The first time I shaved I literally clogged the razor with the deodorant, it was awful. So now I always make an effort to properly scrub before I shave which I think has made a big difference. Still doesn't explain my legs being so ropey though.

Shaving foam.
I now worship at the altar of Nivea for men sensitive skin shaving foam.

coffeeinbed · 22/08/2012 20:38

And I wax the bits between the wrist and the elbow.
when I can be arsed

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/08/2012 20:41

I think most models etc will have had laser hair removal

Mine are a bit plucked chicken like too.

PretzelTime · 22/08/2012 21:14

Dove really wants us to care about this don't they. I have honestly not given much thought about mine or other women's armpits before, and I'd like to continue that way.

SunWukong · 22/08/2012 21:18

I epilate the under arms I don't think it's painful at all, guess everyones different.

Have you tried a Mach 3 (best razor in the world) followed by coconut oil?.

thekidsarealright · 22/08/2012 21:26

I care about this OP! Mine are always full of ingrown hairs, lumps, bumps and a conspicuous 5 'o' clock shadow. PLUS they are really hairy if left to grow, I've seen people with a few hairs poking through.

I do find shaving foam and a decent razor help, will definitely be exfoliating too. Watching with interest!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/08/2012 21:32

Waxing is an ongoing work in progress- I've got dark hair and pale skin so it looks a bit Five O'Clock Shadow .

Exfoliate, wax (when the hairs are a decent length so you get them all) then keep on doing.

At the moment I'm doing every 2 weeks ( regrowth quite fine now)

Couldn't put an epilator near my pits (ouch) -ok for legs.

SunWukong · 22/08/2012 21:33

Guess I'm lucky then mine do look like the adverts (shame my legs don't) I use an epilator takes about 4 weeks for anything to show wasn't much there to start with anyway and unlike my legs no bumps, no ingrowing hairs etc.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/08/2012 21:34

BTW I'm sure the adverts are touched up. My cousin used to be a photographer (in the days before photoshopping) and everything from food to models were enhanced.

TheCrackFox · 22/08/2012 21:45

Did you honestly give your armpits much thought until Dove told you to? They are not your friend, they want to make money out of you.

So long as your armpits are clean, don't smell (hairy or hair free - the choice us yours) nobody gives a stuff about the state of your armpits either.

MrsHelsBels74 · 22/08/2012 21:54

No I've always been conscious of them, not just since the Dove campaign came out.

NigellasGuest · 22/08/2012 21:55

But this is Style and Beauty, so you can probably assume that OP and others do give a stuff.

NewRowSees · 22/08/2012 22:03

A word of warning, do NOT try to epilate your underarms. I tried once and literally ripped all the skin off, most painful self-inflicted thing ever! :(

betterthannext · 22/08/2012 22:17

thekidsarealright your post describes my chin!
