How do I get beautiful underarms?

I see these adverts with women with smooth, hair free underarms & think, how? Even when I shave I can still see short hairs, had a wax once & they still looked 'lumpy' and the hair was growing back after a week. I tried home epilating once & it was horrendously painful & still not brilliant.

Any tips? I can't afford laser hair removal but I wish I could.

I worry about my underarms constantly. I suffer from recurrent spots (worse than shaving rash and enough to fuel any pus porn threads on MN!) and nothing seems to help. I've tried shaving, not shaving, all commercially available deodorants, natural deodorants/anti-perspirants.

Dove did not give me beautiful underarms. Nothing has. I just tuck my arms in to hide it and hope no-one notices.

Coconut oil!

I epliate my underarms, have done so for years, never any problems. Was a little painful at first but not at all any more. Shaving left me with lovely 5-o'clock shadow, epilator keeps them totally smooth for a week or so.

I am a beauty therapist & definitely don't recommend that you exfoliate that area as it's too sensitive & there are lymph glands under the arms. I would recommend waxing or shaving using a shave oil & a men's razor like Mach 3. You can also get deodorant that his hair minimising. Laser would be the only permanent solution though you do need to have top ups as they can only guarantee a permanent reduction in the hair growth.
Hair removal cream would dissolve the hair further down towards the root but it's messy & time consuming. Also the underarm area is sensitive so it may irritate the area.

Philips lumea is worth considering! I have smooth underarms since getting it a few months back.

I epilate mine. It hurts the first time, but if you do it regularly it's fine. I exfoliate them (gently) to prevent ingrowing hairs.

Shaving underarms is no good for me, as it's difficult to get a close enough shave without nicking the skin, and the stubble looks and feels horrible.

Waxing is good too, but I find it impossible to do myself in that area.

I haven't seen these adverts, but surely most of the photos in 'beauty' advertising are airbrushed/touched up a bit, if you saw the models in real life they might not be quite so 100% flawless :)

I always shaved but decided I would wax to try and get the perfect under arm!

What a fool I was. The waxologist (I can't think of the right title just now) really hurt me and I ended up bleeding and sore. Despite being vigilant I have now ended up with an infection in my lymph nodes and on antibiotics. My doc does not approved of waxing underarms!

I did think about letting the salon at John Lewis know about how the procedure was carried out - I have my legs waxed for a long time, so I am used to waxing - but I didn't. I think I should have now!

I'm back to shaving for good now.

I used to shave since I was about 12. I had razor bumps, dark shadow, irritated skin and of course coarse dark hair. At 27 I went for laser removal (it took about 8 sessions, the first 6 in the space of a year (every 2 months) and then just once yearly before summer and my armpits are smooth and lovely looking since, and not a single hair in sight! I am afraid this is the only way to achieve what you want. Costs a lot but totally worth it. I did my bikini line too...

Epilating works for me - I have a tendency to 5 'o' clock shadow under my arms, & epilating leaves them smooth for a few days, then the hair comes in fine.

I suspect it may be very individual though - epilating anywhere else has been dreadful for me, ingrown hairs, the lot. But for some reason under my arms it's worked fine Confused.

valiumredhead · 24/08/2012 14:28

The models you see with perfectly smooth underarms haven't even got perfectly smooth underarms - they are air brushed within an inch of their lives!

It's just another thing to make us feel inadequate about - 5 years ago no one would have even be talking about underarms.

wellwisher · 24/08/2012 14:31

I have received several compliments on my picture-perfect pits Confused - only thing I can suggest is not to shave them every day as shaving irritates the skin, and always to use a new razor and some sort of lubricating shaving stuff.

Could you cope with letting them go au naturel over the winter when you're in sleeved tops? You might find that even a few weeks' break from shaving calms the skin down.

Krumbum · 24/08/2012 16:04

They are photoshopped. Rl armpits look like yours.

googietheegg · 24/08/2012 16:38

Not read thread so sorry if repeating ...

I had the same issue - I didn't shave for a few days (plan carefully Blush) and put a good layer of bepanthen cream on at night. I now put the cream on every week or two overnight and use a new razor regularly and I have peachy pits! Grin
