Skinny jeans when size 14 with massive thighs - is this ever ok?

UnbridledPositivity · 20/08/2012 21:32

I really like how skinny jeans look on other people. Not necessarily all skinny people, sometimes I even think short and sort of slightly bigger women look really lovely in them. So the aesthetically pleasing thing, for me, doesn't seem to be about size as such, perhaps proportions, I don't know.

I am quite tall (5'10 ish) and hover between a 12 and 14, and have tried on countless pairs of skinny jeans, but they never look right. I know bootcut should be the answer, but the ones I have just look so massive with lots of fabric swishing around my feet, and I thought skinny jeans would just look less mumsy. I got some Topshop Baxters in the sale, and while they fit (as in, I can squeeze myself into them fine and do the button up comfortably), I just can't decide if they look ok. My thighs are quite big, as is my bum, and they sort of blend together with an extra roll of flab at the top of my thighs (blergh).

Is it time to give up on the skinnies?

Yes.... just wear a longish top, rather than a crop top.

iloveberries · 20/08/2012 21:35

Probably

You need to feel comfortable in what you're wearing and skinnies don't seem like they're doing it for you. It's a bugger though - I have the same problem with certain items and have now given up trying as I always feel shit in them!

Have you got a pair of jeans which you look and feel fantastic in? Just a few more pairs in different colours?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 20/08/2012 21:35

IMHO (and do bear in mind I am an advocate of the Mum Boot :)) Skinny jeans are never OK on anyone over a size 8. Unless tucked into riding boots with a tunic/long jumper, which is probably another Mum fashion!

Quodlibet · 20/08/2012 21:39

NO! I think everyone feels a bit like their shape is exposed in skinny jeans at any size, but personally I think skinnies have the potential to look good on lots of different body shapes - they aren't just for skinnies. At the risk of sounding like a wanker I think it's about the whole body silhouette you create, and you can balance skinny jeans with lots of interestingly-cut tops.. I bet once you've worn them a few times you'll get used to them

I can't believe someone wrote an article about that

Poor nataliecassidy

flibbertigibbert · 20/08/2012 21:42

Straight leg jeans may be the answer - speaking as a size 14 with huge thighs and big bum. More flattering than skinny or BC jeans. I like Gap Real Straight, or H&M's though they can be difficult to find

bushymcbush · 20/08/2012 21:43

I'm probably going against the grain here, but I think good quality skinnies look nice on all sizes. I agree that a looser top is more flattering for people over a size 12ish, but I think most women's legs look shapely in them. (By shapely I don't mean thin - I mean shaped like a woman.) They do need to be decent quality jeans though, and a good fit / length.

miomio · 20/08/2012 21:43

Try straight leg instead. I think you need slim thighs for skinnies. It isn't about being a 10/12/14 imo

LittlePandaBear · 20/08/2012 21:44

I've never managed the skinny jean thing either, although I feel like I should! I have big thighs and they're just emphasised in skinnies and make me look shorter and stumpier.

I also wonder about the point of wearing them with long boots and a long tunic/jumper - surely you can then just see a bit of knee? Grin

UnbridledPositivity · 20/08/2012 21:45

Hmm, I thought the replies would be harsher than this, phew!

I really don't feel comfortable in them as they're so much tighter than my other jeans. My most comfortable pair are Gap Curvy bootcut jeans, but they are about 2 inches too long as the girl in the shop was on a hard-sell mission and I thought I could just shorten them myself, but it's such a hassle working out how to make them the same length and still show the bottom seam that I still haven't done it.

And after recently seeing a photo of myself in the Gap jeans, my bum seem bigger than I thought it was and sticks out a lot more. Plus my legs are are really annoying shape - it's as if everyone else's legs are perfectly even so that their calves are a straight continuation from their thighs, whereas my calves and thighs don't really seem to match and look all wonky, if that makes sense.

hermioneweasley · 20/08/2012 21:48

I had been wondering this myself, being thunderous of thigh but also aware that I am looking very frumpy in my boot cuts. Babs, your link has decided it for me - better frumpy than ridiculous!

ellangirl · 20/08/2012 21:48

Looking at the hm catalogue the other day, I was struck by the plus size model looking so much better in skinny jeans than the boot cut. Have a look and see if you agree boot cut jeans are much further down

UnbridledPositivity · 20/08/2012 21:49

Ah yes, my knees are fine, so perhaps hiding the rest of me is the answer! Grin

Indeed, poor Natalie Cassidy that someone wrote that article, but that's probably how my legs look too, except my bum isn't quite so ... flat and I wouldn't wear pastels. (Not criticising NC, she probably didn't get much choice over her wardrobe, and I think she's lovely.)

In those pics of Natalie Cassidy, the top doesn't really compliment the jeans, and the jeans themselves are a bit too light coloured, and not heavy enough denim. She could look good in the right pair IMHO.

pookey · 20/08/2012 21:54

Don't give up just try on lots of pairs. Wear tops and footwear that are flattering when you go shopping so you can see them at their best. I am a size 16 and love these, ok jeggings have a bad press but these are great in black Dorothy Perkins ultra soft jeggings I usually wear with a top and long cardi maybe a scarf - less good in summer though when you can't disguise the roll of flab! . Good with flip flops or flats or trainers. Have had compliments such as you look glamerous/ trendy if teamed with good hair and make up :) They come up a little big though so if in between sizes go for the smaller size

cheaperthantherapy · 20/08/2012 21:55

This is exactly my body shape too and I personally wouldn't do the skinny, sorry. Those gap straight leg ones look brilliant though - am going shopping tomorrow now! Thanks flibber.

Kaloobear · 20/08/2012 21:56

Topshop's Kristen jeans are much more flattering than their Baxters in my opinion-they're higher waisted and the fabric is better. I think anyone can wear skinny jeans, it's just a matter of what you wear with them and being confident Smile

UnbridledPositivity · 20/08/2012 22:02

The Gap real straight leg ones are looking good... might have to go and try them on... shame they only do the tiny sizes online.

OP posts:
Zipitydooda · 20/08/2012 22:20

Also look at Gap curvy skinny fit online they are less skinny and have a v flattering wide waistband. I wear them with long tops or short dresses and find a sillouette that goes in at the waist looks more flattering than all over bagginess on top.

They never seem to have the sizes in stock though; v frustrating.

midori1999 · 20/08/2012 22:30

I am a size 14/16 and have big thighs/calves compared to my waist size and I find straight leg jeans look much better on me than skinny jeans and in fact they look like skinnies do on a lot of people.

I am certainly no fashionista though!

mup4john · 21/08/2012 00:41

There are a couple of looks you could try. If you could find a pair with a lighter shader running down the centre of the leg it gives the illusion of slimmer thighs. You could also try Levi's curve id slim leg which is a little more than a skinny but less than a straight. With denim though the premium denim ranges really work but do avoid pastels as that shows up imperfections. You are better off paying more for one pair of a good fitting jean in a quality denim fabric you will wear time and time again rather than loads of cheap pairs in poorer quality that will sit in your wardrobe. There are some great patters out for Autumn. Try online at www.karaboclothing.co.uk a great denim shop will so much to choose from. If all else fails go for nydj jeans - they have some great skinnies in so many designs.

PuffPants · 21/08/2012 01:22

I can't wait for bootcuts to make a come back. They just look so good in a nice dark shade with boots - why am I the only one left who can see it? Well, ok, me, Jennifer Anistin and Katie Holmes Wink

Skinny jeans are the emperor's new clothes.?

VegansTasteBetter · 21/08/2012 01:25

No, to skinny jeans on anyone over 18 regardless of size
