Skinny jeans when size 14 with massive thighs - is this ever ok?

I really like how skinny jeans look on other people. Not necessarily all skinny people, sometimes I even think short and sort of slightly bigger women look really lovely in them. So the aesthetically pleasing thing, for me, doesn't seem to be about size as such, perhaps proportions, I don't know.

I am quite tall (5'10 ish) and hover between a 12 and 14, and have tried on countless pairs of skinny jeans, but they never look right. I know bootcut should be the answer, but the ones I have just look so massive with lots of fabric swishing around my feet, and I thought skinny jeans would just look less mumsy. I got some Topshop Baxters in the sale, and while they fit (as in, I can squeeze myself into them fine and do the button up comfortably), I just can't decide if they look ok. My thighs are quite big, as is my bum, and they sort of blend together with an extra roll of flab at the top of my thighs (blergh).

Is it time to give up on the skinnies?

Saw colored skinny jeans on two extremely pear shaped women over the weekend and it was not a pretty sight. You can be too large or too thin for skinnies.

Not sure why skinny jeans are such a must here. Every teenager wears them and just saw an ad in my mother's AARP mag advertising skinnies for grannies. That's writing on the wall people... You don't have to be a late adopter of a trend. Wear what suits and flatters your shape, not what someone tells you to.

Personally, I wear bootcuts and straight legs and flares a lot. If you keep the rest of the outfit in proportion, they look fresh and good. Lighter and higher shoes work well with bootcuts.

I'm a 16-18 (new 16, hooray :)) and I wear skinnies. I wore skinnies when I was a 20 too, and I look/looked good in them. I do stay away from pale coloured skinnies though, they do me no favours. Grin

How about a baby boot like these www.mih-jeans.com/womens-jeans/the-london-christie.html#home

Hudson also do a very flattering baby boot but they are a bit low rise for me

Try m and s 5 pocket jeggings . They are not mega straight and so comfy . I have the navy blue colour and they are very flattering .cheap too .. I am hourglass and short if that makes a difference .

Also pay attention to different washes. Strategic ones create optic illusions - whiskering details in the upper thigh area for example. If you want your thighs to appear narrower, choose jeans that have a vertical whitewashed highlighting effect on the thigh area. Try on lots of jeans with a friend and only choose the most flattering ones.

I have a few pairs of MiH and love them.

Sheila · 21/08/2012 09:56

Do you have the London MiH jeans Dona, or another cut?

Mumelie · 21/08/2012 14:48

I'm a size 14 on the bottom half with a big bum and thighs and I love my skinnies. Ok, I wouldnt wear pale blue ones like poor Natalie Cassidy. But dark indigo or colours are fine. I pair them with flat sandals or boots. Top wise it has to balance my figure out as I'm a size smaller, so something lose and longish.

I also have these straight leg jeans from Next which are great on fat days Grin

Well, I have returned the Topshop skinnies now as I don't think I would have worn them and they kept sliding down and giving me saggy bum.
Think I'll save up for a pair of Gap jeans as they usually fit me best.

Thanks for the positive responses everyone, I really wasn't expecting that.

The Gap High Rise Skinnies (which should be coming back into store in the Autumn) are very flattering, as are the Gap Real Straight jeans. A size 32 should be fine in the High Rise for a size 12/14. I'm a 10/12 and wear a 30.

pookey · 21/08/2012 23:32

It's funny I used to think straight legged jeans looked frumpy and boot cut was so flattering but now the reverse. A saleswoman convinced me boot cut were back recently so I bought some but somehow they don't work for me anymore - probably because I cannot be arsed wearing high heeled boots and need to cover my thigs with long cardi's!

exterminateexterminate · 23/08/2012 14:27

I can just about get away with skinnies/leggings/jeggings if they're tucked into mid-calf length boots and wear a bum-covering top. The boots seem to help with the inverted triangle appearance and balance things up a bit more. I think the best thing is to try lots on in places that have rear-view mirrors, go for dark colours and see how you look/feel.

ToastedTeacakes · 23/08/2012 16:05

I'm small, but the thing about skinnies is how revealing they are, and i think this goes for every type of figure. I've stood in the mirror, sometimes trying to squint round and see my backside, and complained about feeling 'fat', yet I am far from it. What i think this means is that the jeans cling in a pretty intimate way, and starkly reveal your every curve and contour. The shape of my thighs where they meet my arse had never occurred to me prior to wearing skinnies, and even though i am fine with this part of my body, i still feel somewhat odd about it. They leave very little to the imagination in terms of your silhouette.

My conclusion?
Just sod it and wear them. If you like the style, just do your best to enhance what you've got (or not got, as the case may be), and go with the flow. I am fairly evenly proportioned and still feel nekkid in these damn things! And personally I haven't thought body size makes much difference with skinnies, it's more about how you wear them, style them, etc.
Not sure I can relate to people who insist that larger ladies shouldn't wear them - why care so much about another woman's shape? There are people who even go so far as to 'find it offensive', which boggles my mind.

ToastedTeacakes · 23/08/2012 16:10

Oh and many of the most stylish wearers of skinnies which have struck me have been worn by women over 30. Emmanuelle Alt for one. The idea of having to be under 18 to wear them is rather bizarre.

What a horrible, repressed way to live.

mamalovebird · 23/08/2012 16:12

You're 5'10" and a 12-14 - that doesn't sounds like you're carrying that much weight to me.

I'm 5'6" and the same size and live in skinny jeans and think I look alright (although maybe in fact, everyone is laughing at me but I don't really care). H&M works for me with regard to the cut as they have two waist heights if you're worried about muffin tops.

I'm sure you don't look half as bad as you think you do.

wildfig · 23/08/2012 16:22

I'm 5'7" and a size 12 but with the chunky thighs of a giant toddler. Skinny jeans make me want to weep. However, I was talked into a pair of Gap Sexy Boot jeans by a determined salesperson and actually they are a genius optical illusion - they're tight around the knees and calves which gives the impression you're wearing skinnies but then they sort of flare out enough to balance your legs from a distance. Definitely worth a go.
