Sea salt spray for tousled hair...tips and advice please

I'm intrigued by the idea of using a sea salt spray on my (layered shoulder length slightly wavy) hair for a natural, tousled look.
I've heard mixed opinions on it though, from some saying it is great and others saying it is drying or leaves hair sticky.

So anyone got any experiences with using sea salt spray, good or bad? And what brand, or do you make your own?

Ta muchly.

I used to use this one until they discontinued it It was brilliant. Smelled of coconuts, gave gorgeous shiney waves to my shoulder length slightly wavy hair.

JOHN FRIEDA IF YOU'RE LISTENING PLEASE START MAKING THIS STUFF AGAIN

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/08/2012 19:46

I used to use that too... ((wistful))

headfairy · 09/08/2012 19:46

that probably doesn't help you much. All other brands I've tried have left me with crunchy hair :(

bluebump · 09/08/2012 19:46

Oh headfairy I feel your pain, I used to use that entire range and then they discontinued it without warning. Best hair range EVER.

PestoSandalissimos · 09/08/2012 19:48

I sometimes use

Bumble & Bumble surf spray

T'is good, but does also make hair a little 'crispy'. So it's good for a one off, but the next day I find I have to wash my hair as it's no good for consecutive days Grin

Rachog · 09/08/2012 19:48

I use the lee stafford one, it's alright, smells nice but if I overdo it, it makes my hair a bit crunchy.

headfairy · 09/08/2012 19:50

I tried the B&B one and the crispy-ness ruined it for me. The John Frieda one left hair really soft and silky.

I'm harping on about it a lot aren't I?

John Frieda, what were you thinking discontinuing it?

kirstos · 09/08/2012 19:51

Fudge Salt Spray is brilliant - smells all coconut-y and not sticky/drying at all: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B002E4ZPZK

Selks · 09/08/2012 19:52

Hmmm, crispy hair doesn't sound so nice. Typical that the best sounding one is discontinued! Grin

If you spray it on and then blast your hair with the hair dryer it gives you that beach look.

Selks · 09/08/2012 19:54

That Fudge one sounds good. Like the idea of coconuttyness too. I can pretend that I'm on holiday (while commuting to work around the M62) Smile

I obviously dont belong on the S and B board, because I don't know what this is - even having looked at the links!

What does it do? (And is it only for young stylish people with swishy hair?)

dreamingbohemian · 09/08/2012 20:05

Ooooh can you make your own? I live in sea salt land, would be cheap Smile

SchrodingersMew · 09/08/2012 20:06

I just add a load of sea salt to hot water in a spray bottle and shake...

Selks · 09/08/2012 20:08

"What does it do? " ......that's a good question....I'm not so sure either! More body / texture / 'tousleyness'?

OP posts:
Selks · 09/08/2012 20:09

How much sea salt to water, Schrodinger?

OP posts:
SchrodingersMew · 09/08/2012 20:16

It makes you're hair wavy, think surfer chick look.

I don't really know, I just pour some in out of the bag and hope I've not put in too much! Blush Then I put it in towel dried hair and twirl my hair up with my fingers...

Selks · 09/08/2012 20:22

And then just let it dry naturally, or hair dry it?

headfairy · 09/08/2012 20:26

AP do you like the way your hair looks when you've spent the day on the beach or the seaside - quite a few people would answer no to that I realise. However, mine looks really nice. Even if I've been swimming in the sea and not washed it. It dries all curly and - I'm not sure if this is the right word - clumpy. I'm not describing it properly.

Sea salt sprays are designed to mimic that surfer chick look. Mind you, my mum has told me at 42 I'm too old to have "rat tails in my hair" and I should blow dry and style properly. But then I'm an old hippy at heart and would happily spend the rest of my life barefoot, with wavy clumpy bleach blonde hair, living in a beach hut and painting pebbles all day long .

Selks · 09/08/2012 20:30

Ha ha, me too (to the age/barefoot/beach hut thing)

Jane Birkin recommends rinsing your hair in coke.

AgentProvocateur · 09/08/2012 20:36

Hmm, mine is naturally quite...ungroomed, and a bit wavy anyway. But yes, I do like seaside hair. Does it change the colour? Mine goes lighter at the seaside.

headfairy · 09/08/2012 20:58

Um not sure it makes your hair lighter... the John Frieda one used to make it a lot shinier, because I think there was a dry oil component to it (a bit like Moroccan oil) so it really adds shine too. There was an oil layer on top which you shook up before spraying.

SchrodingersMew · 09/08/2012 21:13

Just let it dry naturally.

Tethers Would diet coke work? I might try that tonight...

headfairy · 09/08/2012 21:24

I suppose it could work Schrodingers after all the spray at the beach is just sea water isn't it?
