red dress

I have reached 39 and the realisation that I am no longer wearing clothes that make me happy. I don't want to be trendy or fashionable, or even appear to be two dress sizes smaller, really - I want clothes that enhance my life and make me happy. Like I spent most of the 90's wearing. My summer 'uniform' is: denim skirt (straight), leggings if chilly, plain t-shirt in cringing, don't-look-at-me neutral tones, like navy, dark blue, olive or brown. Sometimes I will crack out a (navy) shirtdress from Fat Face which is nice (but only if worn with Spanx). Sometimes, and against all better instincts, I wear several-seasons-old White Stuff-y tunics or tops or dresses and look like all the other preschool mummies, except two stone heavier.

Something clicked this morning and as I surveyed my mud-coloured wardrobe, I resolved to wear dresses a lot more. I like wearing dresses - they make me feel happy and swishy and I like them. I don't mind wearing Spanx underneath them but I draw the line at anything more punative. I used to wear bright colours and feel happy, and now I wear navy, brown, olive, taupe, dark blue, khaki, and feel sludgy and frumpy. I've decided I don't care if the yummies at the toddler music group make Hmm faces at me in bloody unison because I'm wearing a DRESS omg!, I just want to wear stuff that enhances my mood, every day.

For starters, I would very very much like a dress like the one Caitlin Moran is wearing here. I don't want to be told it is frumpy (I'm sure it is by someone's MN standards), or mumsy (I am a mum, I don't see a problem with being identified as such, and in any case it ought to be abundantly clear that I'm a mum because of my constant retinue of 4 yo, sticky 19 mo and nappies spilling out of my bag), or that the original dress cost a four-figure sum and was bought for the shoot. I would like a red dress like that. I think I'm quite similar in build to La Moran - we are both quite amply stacked and we're both a bit prone to slight lardiness. We also both seem to like a bit of a 50's vibe in clothing. (See, we could so be besties.) Suggestions for 50's stuff would also be fab, but not Vivien of Holloway. a) I can't afford it and b) she insists on sticking to authentic 50's proportions. Last time I checked, I would need a size 20 to accommodate my waist Blush and then need to take in the bust a lot. Sod that, for a £95 frock.

Please help. I just got a tax rebate GrinGrinGrin and though most of it will have to go into reducing my overdraft and spending money for our holiday, I would just like a couple of things to wear that didn't come from Sainsbury, a charity shop, or ebay. Thank you. Smile

(I'm a 16, have largeish boobs (36E/F), getting apple-fatness after DS2, and am a shortarse - 5'2".)

Hello reshape
I've been following this thread with great interest. I love the dress styles linked to and am a similar height/ size to you. But I just wanted to ask whether you wear or intend to wear tights every day in your new dress wearing life? My legs are horrible and much as I would love to wear dresses every day I would have to cover my legs!

thriftychic · 01/08/2012 15:03

I too have found this really interesting , have been wanting to become a dress wearer myself ! the cath kidston dress is gorgeous , love it !

but, can i ask what do all you dress wearers put on your feet ? and do you go bare legged ? what about when its raining (like today) what sort of coat would work with it ?

being 5ft 2 myself i wonder if flat shoes and a dress looks dumpy but really cant be doing with anything high.

MinnieBar · 01/08/2012 15:10

Right, what am I doing wrong? I am large of norkage and bulgy of stomach - should I always be wearing spanx or do I just need more 'structured' dresses??

Loved that blue-and-white polka-dot one you linked to. Gorgeous!

As a total aside, why is Caitlin Moran always, always raising her eyebrows to the max in pictures? Not being bitchy, just wondering....

thriftychic · 01/08/2012 15:27

lol we seem to have lots of questions !

hope someone will answer !!

LaBelleDamesansTurkey · 01/08/2012 15:30

I can't be doing with tights in hot weather. Leggings at a push, but mostly just holiday skin fake tan and bare legs.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 01/08/2012 15:32

Mamahotfoot - I tried a lovely 50's wrap dress in a Pepperberry once and it was such a disappointment - none of the sizes fitted me (one size would fit boobs but not waist, another waist but not back, etc) and I found the fabric pretty flimsy. It was lovely looking, though.

LOVE the Silk and Sawdust but not the prices! Grin

Ipotty - My legs are a bit sad-looking at the moment - an insect bite here, a bruise there - but below the knee they're essentially ok. I'm looking to buy dresses for autumn and winter though, and imagine I'll wear them with cardigans, black opaques or coloured tights, and boots or mary janes. Leggings or footless tights on a cool summer day? (god, I can't believe I'm holding forth - S&B is so not my natural habitat! Grin)

thriftychic, dunno if you like retro styling, but I've got a fab pair of black kitten-heel mary janes that add just enough lift, and look right with 40's tea dresses. (they are Footglove! Grin) I think People Wot Know More Than Me wear tea dresses with brogues, but I'm barely aware of what that constitutes for a laydeee. As far as I'm concerned, brogues are what my DH wears when he's in a Chappish mood and feeling spruce. Confused

Minniebar - dunno about the eyebrow lift thing, but it sort of fits the cover of How to be a Woman. I think I read her saying somewhere that her default 'photo expression' is Muppet Face, so maybe her publishers think the quizzical thang works better to sell books ... Wink

I love the tea dress links. But what does one do if one is also chunky of calf and cankly of ankles? Iam an hourglass but my legs are shockingly bad and I shy away from dresses because of them but I'm bored of trousers now.

thriftychic · 01/08/2012 16:20

thanks , yes , mary janes could be an answer . i have noticed brogues are very popular on some blogs i have looked at.

hush puppies do some but i suspect i may look more crazy school teacher ! www.soyoushoes.co.uk/Hush-Puppies-Fickle-Leather-Heeled-Brogue-Shoes/

dunno , what say you lot ?

BerylStreep · 01/08/2012 16:22

Who asked about preventing thighs from rubbing together?

You can get Body Glide from running shops and it likes like a stick deodorant. It's supposed to stop rubbing when running, but it works very well on chubby thighs too.

LaBelleDamesansTurkey · 01/08/2012 16:23

Flat brogues are very difficult to wear unless you have perfect pins.

DontmindifIdo · 01/08/2012 21:04

Not sure if this is really your thing but this is in the phase 8 sale, bright and ok for 'day' rather than just 'dressed up.

DontmindifIdo · 01/08/2012 21:06

£20 - every day dress

DontmindifIdo · 01/08/2012 21:07

Last one from phase 8 - I promise! nigh neck line so might not be nork flattering.

BerylStreep · 01/08/2012 22:07

Dontmind - the 1st one was really good.

bunjies · 01/08/2012 22:32

Great thread. Marking place.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 01/08/2012 22:59

Love the 50's dress (last link), Dontmind! I don't think it'd flatter me though and it's too fitted. Fantastic print. The first one's beautiful, especially if you're curvy rather than apple-shaped ahem but probably too formal for me to wear unless it was an event. It's stunning though.

I have to say, the 'Audrey' on the Aliumb site is very similar to the fever one CM is wearing, no ruching on the bodice though.

Loads of great links on here though- thanks to all!

PippiL · 03/08/2012 23:05

Uh oh!

I just bought the Salzburg and Quant dresses from Fever thanks to this post. Can't wait for winter now, just got to find boots to go with them.
