red dress

I have reached 39 and the realisation that I am no longer wearing clothes that make me happy. I don't want to be trendy or fashionable, or even appear to be two dress sizes smaller, really - I want clothes that enhance my life and make me happy. Like I spent most of the 90's wearing. My summer 'uniform' is: denim skirt (straight), leggings if chilly, plain t-shirt in cringing, don't-look-at-me neutral tones, like navy, dark blue, olive or brown. Sometimes I will crack out a (navy) shirtdress from Fat Face which is nice (but only if worn with Spanx). Sometimes, and against all better instincts, I wear several-seasons-old White Stuff-y tunics or tops or dresses and look like all the other preschool mummies, except two stone heavier.

Something clicked this morning and as I surveyed my mud-coloured wardrobe, I resolved to wear dresses a lot more. I like wearing dresses - they make me feel happy and swishy and I like them. I don't mind wearing Spanx underneath them but I draw the line at anything more punative. I used to wear bright colours and feel happy, and now I wear navy, brown, olive, taupe, dark blue, khaki, and feel sludgy and frumpy. I've decided I don't care if the yummies at the toddler music group make Hmm faces at me in bloody unison because I'm wearing a DRESS omg!, I just want to wear stuff that enhances my mood, every day.

For starters, I would very very much like a dress like the one Caitlin Moran is wearing here. I don't want to be told it is frumpy (I'm sure it is by someone's MN standards), or mumsy (I am a mum, I don't see a problem with being identified as such, and in any case it ought to be abundantly clear that I'm a mum because of my constant retinue of 4 yo, sticky 19 mo and nappies spilling out of my bag), or that the original dress cost a four-figure sum and was bought for the shoot. I would like a red dress like that. I think I'm quite similar in build to La Moran - we are both quite amply stacked and we're both a bit prone to slight lardiness. We also both seem to like a bit of a 50's vibe in clothing. (See, we could so be besties.) Suggestions for 50's stuff would also be fab, but not Vivien of Holloway. a) I can't afford it and b) she insists on sticking to authentic 50's proportions. Last time I checked, I would need a size 20 to accommodate my waist Blush and then need to take in the bust a lot. Sod that, for a £95 frock.

Please help. I just got a tax rebate GrinGrinGrin and though most of it will have to go into reducing my overdraft and spending money for our holiday, I would just like a couple of things to wear that didn't come from Sainsbury, a charity shop, or ebay. Thank you. Smile

(I'm a 16, have largeish boobs (36E/F), getting apple-fatness after DS2, and am a shortarse - 5'2".)

You just tweeted her? Grin Thanks! I was still getting up the courage (I don't twit much). Ok, I can always look on ebay. And continue looking at Fever online. Ta!

She used to be a MNer. Not sure if she still posts now though, but I remember when she did.

GotMyLittleLamb · 30/07/2012 18:58

BupcakesandCunting · 30/07/2012 19:06

Windsock, you must be a sleb as Caitlin Moran only replies to celeb tweets! Wink

ReshapeWhileDamp · 30/07/2012 19:17

The 1940's tea dress, GotMy? I'm dithering over the red one - love 40's style too, but hard to find for my girth. Grin

Windsock clearly a MN Ambassador. GrinWink

Windsock · 30/07/2012 20:19

Oh natch. ;)

BerylStreep · 30/07/2012 21:11

I am also curvey, norkish, and could benefit from a flatter tummy.

Dresses are definitely the way to go!

I really like phase eight, Hobbs can be ok but not always, and my latest finds are:

lovely red dress from Linea. Actually I bought this in black, and it is amazing. I may go back for the red one.

And this:

damsel in a dress

TK Maxx can also have some really good dresses.

Windsock · 30/07/2012 21:43

I have tits but slim
Elsewhere. Dresses a disaster

ReshapeWhileDamp · 30/07/2012 21:46

That sounds like a haiku, Windsock. Grin

Like Quicksie said, this thread is amazing! I spend ages looking for dresses like these and I've found three new suppliers thanks to the lovely MN hints. Hurrah MN!

Trills · 31/07/2012 13:05

That Linea dress is very LK Bennett-ish

Msarsebiscuit · 31/07/2012 16:08

Just look

Msarsebiscuit · 31/07/2012 16:11

Bastarding iPhone, as I was saying before I so rudely pressed the send button, I was just looking at the other dresses thread and thought this was quite similar to the original Caitlin Moran dress www.alliumb.com/products/Clara.html

ReshapeWhileDamp · 31/07/2012 21:42

Don't know if anyone is still watching this thread, but I had a window of opportunity to shop this afternoon, and I found my PERFECT retro, 40's/early 50's tea dress.

It is red. It has small polka dots. It has a very cute 40's collar. It FITS my boobs and skims my stomach, which is no mean feat these days. It's even the right length on me, which is amazing, given aforementioned shortarse status. I loved it so much I bought it on the spot, which is rare for me (tax rebate going to my head) but I knew I wasn't going to find one that fitted better.

And my source? Weeeelllll. This is mumsnet. Please do not mock me. Grin

here

Grin I was brainwashed liked it so much, I bought the cardigan that they were pushing to go with it. (can't find that on the site. It's a vintagey green one.)

I absolutely love that CK dress, her clothes are lovely especially if you avoid the heavily flower patterned stuff. We live not far from the factory shop and I love a good rummage in the sale baskets - you can often get dresses for £20 or £30 that just need a new zip or a button sewing on. Actually I should probably shut up about it or you will all be going there and snapping up the bargains...

JezzaKyle · 31/07/2012 21:51

I LOVE CK tea dresses! They are gorgeous! Don't let anyone tell you different. It's a beautiful frock.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 31/07/2012 22:51
Grin

I love it. Now I just have to make myself wear it and not keep it for a special occasion... it's getting quite far out of my comfort zone of denim skirt/jeans for all preschool-age activities. I'm just so fed up with wearing the same old.

PinkPenguin36 · 31/07/2012 23:14

I'm sure if you follow her on twitter and ask he she will tell you :)

Stevie77 · 31/07/2012 23:20

Ask her, @caitlinmoran on Twitter. I'm sure she'll oblige, she seems nice!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 31/07/2012 23:39

She is, I'm sure! Grin But someone already tweeted her and asked what the dress was. (Look up-thread.) It's Fever from a couple of years ago. Interestingly enough, someone linked to Fever dresses quite early on, so they were bang on the money!

Enjoying this thread and resolving to purchase only tailored dresses from now on. I wondered if you have seen Pepperberry as they are designed for those of us with an ample rack! Also the website gives some advice about what dresses suit different shapes.

I also like Silk and Sawdust for retro styling though can't afford any of their clothes except when they go on sale.

I look forward to finding out what you go for!

snapespeare · 01/08/2012 10:16

that CK dress is absolutely beautiful! :)

ClaudiaCutie · 01/08/2012 11:36

Every time I look in S&B, I learn a new useful thing. I did not know that CK even did clothes. I thought it was all floral teapots, which don't work in a bauhaus interior, so I had ignored her stuff. Now look! Adorable tea dress!! Thanks to ReShape for hint & link :-)

Mama - Pepperberry often dire fabric quality and mad inconsistent sizing, hence scorned by rackful women in the know. Check out the Hourglass thread for other stuff though.
