I see people in RL and in mags with lovely eye make up the eye liner is lightly just under the lower lashes tried and tried to do this on myself and look terrible is there a special secret??

I do a smudgy one, too, with eyeshadow and the edge of a foam applicator (the one that comes in the eyeshadow compact, you know). As everyone says, the more you can work it into the lash roots the better. I make it thicker and darker towards the outer corner.

My eyes are really quite round and look weird with liner all the way along the bottom, but if I'm going for a very made-up look I will do the above with eye liner, starting almost invisible at the inner corner and massive on the outer.

Unfortunately that leaks into my wrinkles as the evening goes on, so I end up smudging it anyway, to soften the damage Wink

YY, Perry, that's a good trick! I do it with a pearly highlighter, right in the corner where it's squishy.

Devora · 26/07/2012 00:26

If you're going to do it, don't FGS use the same dark colour you'd use on your upper lid (unless you're going for a smokey eye or goth look). You need a much paler colour - a pearly grey or champagne or light olive.

PerryCombover · 26/07/2012 00:27

Hey garlic do you use an eyeshadow primer thingy?
Started using it and it's AMAZING
urban decay's one comes free sometimes...

garlicbutter · 26/07/2012 01:38

Ha, I would if I could spend any money on cosmetics, Perry! I have to make do with foundation, though.

Now you mention it, I've still got some Beauty Flash. It's not a fixative like the new products, but it might help. I'll give it a go ... thanks!

I always underline my eyes, if I don't I look piggy. It's not ageing if you do it very subtly. I use a soft brown/grey matt eye shadow, and with a flat angled brush, I line just the outer third of my eyes. That's all it needs.

Drywhiteplease · 26/07/2012 08:35

Thank you quinn. I'm 4535 and use shadow like you. After all Middleton eyeliner bashing on MN and comments on this thread (which i fully take on board) I have been wondering whether I'm making myself look older with my make up. But like you, my eyes disappear without it. I try to keep it soft though.

Gel or pencil liner on the waterline 'wet part' and then use a dark powder on a fine brush below the lash line. Use a fluffy brush or your finger to give the powder a bit of a smudge so that it's not too heavy.

I think you can only do under eye liner if you are very young.
I agree with SrirachaGirl.
It tends to be quite ageing and often highlights dark circles.
Upper flicky lids all the way.

Fourfingerkitkat · 27/07/2012 09:13

I used to line my whole bottom lid then saw myself in pictures and realised that it is pretty ageing and harsh looking.

I know only line the bottom outer third of my eye (iyswim) - from the outer corner to the side of my iris. Very fine line. I line my top lid too. I use Bourjois Clubbing eyeliner in brown. The brush it comes with is ultra fine - I think the thicker the line the more ageing it can look. I also line the inner bottom lid with a light pink eyeliner from Benefit called Mr Frosty...It's lasted ages...think I bought it about 2 yrs ago. Just as well I bought all this bloody makeup before I was made redundant !
Must look ok as I'm often complimented on my makeup

Oh and for the person asking for a good foundation, get a sample of Estee Lauder Double Wear....buffed into your skin with a foundation brush it is easily the best foundation out there.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2012 09:51

I use eyeshadow and put it on with a v fine lipbrush, which I dampen slightly first. I'm getting a bit old for black (but if I do want black I use Urban Decay Oil Slick and smudge it a lot with a cotton bud) so tend to use brown or grey, or a khaki or sable colour, depending on what I'm wearing.

darksideofthemooncup · 30/07/2012 13:45

Two words: Liz Jones.
I never ever use an actual eyeliner under my eye, but subscribe to the flat brush/ eyeshadow tip. Always start light and build up, it is easier to add than to take away although those special cotton buds for eye make up are brilliant for correcting mistakes

Ryoko · 30/07/2012 16:09

I use a pencil I can easily just pencil along under the upper lash and above the bottom one, I stroke my finger across the bottom to make sure the lines straight.

If I want more at the bottom I get a cotton bud and put three dabs of pencil along just under the lash then blend it with the bud and again wipe off excess thats gone to far with finger.

I absolutely hate gels and liquids can't use them, pencils are the best but it's a case of trial and error which ones actually have staying power and it's not simply the case of one brand being better then others, the colour plays a part too. For example the best black I've had is Rimmel but the other colours are rubbish and don't stay or go on your skin well, Bourjois blue is the best blue ever.

I'm still completely useless when it comes to putting a thick black line above my upper lashes, just can't get it right takes ages and then it all transfers off onto my brow area.

Eliza22 · 30/07/2012 16:22

I use a Coloursport product from larger Boots. In Brown. It has the finest felt tip applicator and I just dot dot dot dot, close to my lower lash line, from midway under my pupil, working outward.

I wouldn't draw a line as such, not for "everyday" but I find how I do it, emphasises my eye, without looking "Goth" Smile

The 24 eye liner lasts. Even whilst on hols in the pool. With the lightest (and I do mean lightest) of touches, I use the same pen on my brows. It's so very fine that you get a whisper of "ink". And that stays on too!

The Coloursport 24 Hour thingy was about £7.50, I think.

HeartsJandJ · 30/07/2012 16:27

I go for a thick kohl (Bad Gal I think it's called, from benefit) and put it under the lashes on the top eyelid. It then sort of transfers in a nice light line just where I want it to the bottom eyelid.

Really easy but makes the eye look "done" and then a curler and bit of mascara it lasts all day.

SolosGreatBritishOlympicGold · 30/07/2012 16:28

If you have small eyes, don't put it on the 'wet' part of the under lid. If you have lines under your eyes, don't use eye shadow, it will work into the creases and look awful.

SolosGreatBritishOlympicGold · 30/07/2012 16:29

Ooops!

liner on the outside of your lashes = bigger eyes. on the inner= smaller eyes.

Fuckitthatlldo · 30/07/2012 17:17

I am 36 with reddish hair and very fair skin, including fair eyebrows and eyelashes. If I don't get my eyebrows tinted and wear eyeliner and mascara, my eyes disappear and I look like a ghost.

I am, however, careful to do it very subtly.

I personally don't think eyeliner applied to the lower waterline is a very good idea on anyone over about the age of 25. Also, it makes the eyes look smaller, not to mention the fact that it can give you eye infections. But each to their own.

I use a soft kohl pencil in brown and apply in a very thin line on the outer half of my eyes, right in the lash roots on top. The idea is to make the roots of the lashes look thicker rather than have an obvious line. Then on the bottom, again just on the outer half, I apply it in very light small strokes (almost dots) at the lash root and use my finger to smudge it. It gives my eyes definition without looking like a 'line' IYSWIM.

If I'm going out in the evening and am wearing eyeshadow, then I'll run a little of that underneath my lashes too, using a flat eyeshadow brush.

Catsmamma · 30/07/2012 17:32

I tend to just do the outer third top and bottom for everyday, and only use a soft brown, grey or maybe a greeny sludge olive colour.

for a bit more drama I'll go inside the lower lashes and all the way across, still the same colours....if I go over the top lid I never go more than half way in.

Have also moved over to NOT black for mascara, just too ageing. I love love love the purple/burgundy bad gal, really brings out the green in my eyes.

Also for technique I favour a pencil but rather than draw the line under the lashes as you would normally I tuck the pencil tip under my lashes and go side ways out, using the edge of the "nib" rather than the point iyswim?

The dot technique is also good, and have also used the blob it all on, and tissue off the excess method.
