I see people in RL and in mags with lovely eye make up the eye liner is lightly just under the lower lashes tried and tried to do this on myself and look terrible is there a special secret??

No idea I'm afraid, but watching with interest.

pippop1 · 25/07/2012 16:32

I've seen people put eyeliner on the "wet" part of the bottom of their eyes i.e. above the actual eyelashes. I've tried that and it looks fab and how I want it to look except that in a few mins it has migrated onto my contact lenses and I can't see through the eyeline fog.

If you don't wear contact lenses and don't mind doing this (don't share eyeliner) then I expect this is the secret. You pull the skin down just under your eye and use the side of the pencil or brush full of gel inside the eye v v carefully.

I put on the eyeliner under my lower lashes (like a child would crayon), then with my finger in a tissue wipe off again, leaves a lovely straight line right close to the lower lashes. you can make the line as thick or as thin as you wish

Easier if you have a really really soft pencil though.

LurkeyLurkerson · 25/07/2012 17:26

I put it on the 'wet part' as pippop suggests. I also only apply it from the middle of my eye (under the pupil) outwards, because if I do the whole eye it makes them look small.

craftynclothy · 25/07/2012 17:28

I do this but I use eyeshadow not eyeliner. You can get cotton buts that are for eye make-up and I either use a damp one of those or a very slim flat eyeshadow brush dry.

craftynclothy · 25/07/2012 17:28

cotton buds

cocolepew · 25/07/2012 17:31

I like a 'heavy' line, I use eyeliner then my eyeshadow on top to soften it.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 25/07/2012 17:31

I have a pencil that has a smudger type thing on the end. I use that to blend and soften the line

HecateHarshPants · 25/07/2012 17:31

I sweep it along the lower lash line (not the wet part, the other side, but brushing the lashes) then I get some powder eyeshadow in a slightly lighter shade and use that to blend the eyeliner so it isn't such a harsh and obvious line, isywim. I do a triple colour on the eyelid, with light all over, then a middle shade from 1/3 down then dark at the bottom, sweeping out to meet the eyebrow at the bottom third of it, then blend it with a blusher brush

it gives this look

Now, if only I could actually look gorgeous like that, it would be perfect Grin

TacoLeBell · 25/07/2012 17:40

I do that on my lower lashes and use a grey shadow for daytime, done with an ultra fine brush with black eyeliner on the waterline. For evening I use black eyeliner and use a smudge thing to soften it. It took me a while to perfect the look though, I used to practice just before I took my make up off at night.

Pelicano · 25/07/2012 19:55

I keep trying this but maybe it has something to do with the shape of my eyes.

I'm sure I've also read a similar thread....but I end up looking like Angie from Eastenders '80s style, I think I have very round eyesHmm

Hassled · 25/07/2012 19:57

I go for the "wet" part and look like some refugee from the 80s. But then I look weird when I try for under the eyelash - wish I could suss it.

Drywhiteplease · 25/07/2012 23:29

I bought a fantastic liner brush from MAC about 8 yrs ago pricey but still going and I use it every day. I use their shadow called "brun" and sweep line in top and bottom lash line. It gives softer line than kohl or liquid liner. If I want a stronger line I wet brush a bit.

Brandnewbrighttomorrow · 25/07/2012 23:39

V. Similar to drywhiteplease I have some fab Laura mercier brushes and some nars dark grey eyeshadow that I use to do above and below my lashes.

crazy8 · 25/07/2012 23:40

You can get flat brushes. I dip man in black or brown eyeshadow and use tip of flat edge to dab under bottom lashes.

crazy8 · 25/07/2012 23:41

Mine not man. Oops!

Rooobs · 25/07/2012 23:46

try an eye liner brush like this one.

Like crazy8 says, you use eyeshadow and use the flat edge.

I wish I could do eyeliner on the upper lashes - now that's tricky!

brighthair · 25/07/2012 23:52

Ooh I love doing upper eyeliner, with flicks Grin
I use a gel liner (mac or maybelline) but use the brush that the maybelline one comes with. Like a pointy lip brush

brighthair · 25/07/2012 23:54

Can just about see liner in this pic

Rooobs · 26/07/2012 00:10

oh I WISH I could do those lovely flicks!

Devora · 26/07/2012 00:12

I have pretty much stopped using eyeliner under the eye because as I get older I find it ageing.

However, when I was youthful and cute I used to either:

  • use a flat brush and a neutral shadow, not too dark, kind of butt the brush edge upwards right into the bit where the lower lash meets skin, starting from halfway along the eye and working outwards; or
  • using a soft pencil, dot it between the lashes (this is less tricky than it sounds) then use the smudger end to soften the line.
SrirachaGirl · 26/07/2012 00:15

There is a secret:

Don't.

Upper lids only. Kate Middleton can only just get away with it.

Scarredbutnotbroken · 26/07/2012 00:18

If you want to do the flicks get some cotton buds. I have been wearing liquid eyeliner for years. Apply it with the brush then shape it with a damp cotton bud - easier than you think with practise. I wore maybelline liner express for about a hundred years but having some success with their master precise pen lately though you need to powder the eyelid or it smudges.
For under eye liner, soft eye pencil in a thickish line then similar coloured shadow over the top. I use a sponge applicator with the shadow on the narrow tip with quite a bit of pressure back and forth so quite a bit of the eyeliner comes off - this is how you soften it all. If its a dark grey liner I use a pewter coulured shadow on top that's jury a bit lighter to blend it. Even with black eyeliner a black powder shape on top can work but slightly lighter is better.

PerryCombover · 26/07/2012 00:21

I look like a boss eyed cleopatra when I do this
Step away from the undereyelining people
Step away

PerryCombover · 26/07/2012 00:23

I sometimes do the inner bit with a pinky eyeliner though
When I am a bit "tired" from the night before
