Mid-30s women - where do you buy your clothes??

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 19/07/2012 12:07

I am 34 - 35 in November - and find myself at a bit of a loss as to where to buy clothes.

I am a SAHM so only really need casual things, and as we only have one income I can't splash out too much - I'd happily spend £40 on a new pair of jeans but not £70.

I am normally a size 8 (pregnant at the minute though!) so theoretically it should be quite easy to find stuff to wear, but I feel too old for most shops and too young for the rest!

This is going to be my last baby and when I can go back to dressing normally I need some inspiration about where to go...

I am no longer in my thirties but love threads like this!

For casual, I currently live in M&S black or indigo skinnies, Oasis skinnies, Oasis Scarlet bootcuts or a Topshop maxi skirt or White Company jersey dresses, plus either leopard ballet flats (Clarks) or tan heeled ankle boots (Dune) or red ballet flats (Clarks) and either a cropped trench (M&S Autograph) or a biker jacket (Oasis) or an ancient denim jacket (not with denim though). I like t-shirts and vests from Hobbs or The White Company and silk tops and some t-shirts from Warehouse.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2012 19:52

I also like H&M for cheap cotton blazers, Hobbs sales for good quality blazers and Vivienne Westwood sales for general gorgeousness!

hippermiddleton · 19/07/2012 20:34

I seem to live in Gap or Joe's jeans and scoop neck tops, brightened up with interesting necklaces/scarves (I work from home, so no need for office wear); I spend a bit more in the sales for classic bits of Vivienne Westwood for formal occasions. Phase Eight isn't bad, although it can be a bit frumpy, and there are still one or two classic buys in the Marble Arch M&S each season. I also like to pick up vintage accessories/jackets where I can; they're great for disguising a black dress in high rotation!

Fortunately, or unfortunately, my chunky thighs have ruled out a lot of Fashion lately (so no skinnies, mini skirts, etc) so I've been forced into buying classic shapes that suit me rather than what's fashionable - in the long run, that's probably not a bad thing.

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 19/07/2012 20:51

I am smiling at the image of me browsing Vivienne Westwood for formal wear :)

Thanks everyone. There are loads of good suggestions here. I shall broaden my shopping horizons and maybe even give eBay a whirl...

Zara mainly with some Topshop, Primark and Tesco....

hippermiddleton · 19/07/2012 21:09

Hee! When I say 'formal occasions' I mean anything that I don't have to wear wellies/dog walking coat for. Sadly, they consist of about 3 hours of my usual year. VW does some nice skirts that are classically cut so they don't really date, and are often 70% off in the Question-Air sale. I find looking at Net-a-Porter/Question-Air websites keeps me reasonably abreast of what's meant to go with what, then I go and find it somewhere cheaper else.

BigBandwitch · 19/07/2012 21:15

good question. all the shops listed here, like zara or H&m, I don't like them any more, and otehr shops like Isabella Oliver would be too expensive for me.

Orla Kiely's clothes look all cool and retro on the website but I bet I would look like a librarian in them. Not a real librarian, a parody of a librarian.

DerbyNottsLeicsNightNanny · 19/07/2012 21:28

I'm 33 (and a half!) and due to having a toddler my shopping is almost all done online. I buy from Oasis, Warehouse(occasionally), White Stuff, The White Company, Fat Face, Debenhams, M&S, Monsoon. Also occasionally buy vest tops and other bits from supermarkets. I have bought a couple of things from Dorothy Perkins this year but have found them to look really shabby really quickly.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2012 21:53

I rather enjoy dressing like a parady of a librarian at times! :)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2012 21:54

parody even

FunnyLittleFrog · 20/07/2012 22:55

Just looked at the Orla Kiely stuff online and, my lord, it's expensive! I wouldn't pay that much (anything!) to look like my old primary school head-teacher.

VivaLeBeaver · 20/07/2012 22:59

Gap
Primark
H&m
Zara
TopShop
White stuff
Debenhams
Oasis
John Lewis

msrantsalot · 20/07/2012 23:05

asda/tesco its all i can afford, but LOVE monsoon

stressheaderic · 20/07/2012 23:07

I am 32.
Fave shops are Zara, Dorothy Perkins and Next.

MirandaWest · 20/07/2012 23:11

Am 36. I shop in H&M, Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda mostly. Bought a dress in Animal recently and did wibble a bit about how much it cost but have been wearing it a lot so is OK. I do have issues with spending much on clothes so end up with not many clothes that don't cost much Grin. Although I do have nice bras.

stayfree · 20/07/2012 23:16

I'm 32 and still shop in new Look< Primark, H and M, Topshop etc, find the 'older' shops too frumpy (sorry).

AlpinePony · 21/07/2012 07:03

Finally at the age of 38 I'm becoming a little more discerning.

Joules
Designers at debenhams
Anna scholz
Planet/Hobbs (workwear)
coast

"silk" scarves 99p from Hong Kong. Yes Hobbs, I love your scarves, but really? 55 quid for something I'm going to lose in the wind/rip/find in the toybox?

And am this close to anglomania and Michael kors because the sale prices are very attractive.

DonaAna · 21/07/2012 07:33

39, have almost given up on high street. Believe in buying quality items.
Shop at Matches, NAP, Outnet, Yoox (online).
Independent boutiques, outlets, charity shops.
Department stores at -60% sales twice a year.

Have an odd Hobbs, Topshop, Benetton and Zara piece.
Have accummulated a wardrobe that I really enjoy - lots of designer items that really flatter and feel good, but never bought at full price.

ifancyashandy · 21/07/2012 07:46

42 & shop all over:

Zara (lots)
Asos (lots)
French Connection
Cos
Whistles (lots)
Top Shop
Jaeger (recently lots)
Joseph (recent love affair)
Ghost
Occassionally H&M but usually crap quality.
Some Warehouse

AlpinePony · 21/07/2012 10:51

I forgot also:

Esprit
Mexx

I'm 32 this year, and mainly shop in topshop, gap, marks and spencer, zara, h and m, next. I never shopped in m and s before I had kids, but now I see more and more that I like in there. I like to think it's because their collections are getting better, but my dh says it's because I'm getting old!

spicelette · 02/04/2013 16:43

I get a lot of things from Joe Brown's. some of their stuff us horrifically frilly and over embellished but they also do some lovely more simple styles. their sales are good.
