I looked like the childcatcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!! Don't have great skin so needed a certain amount of foundation but the woman couldn't understand why I was horrified. Don't normally wear foundation as I have a lot of open pores and it tends to 'sit' but I felt totally ridculous, got her to re-do it with less but still looked like a pantomine dame! She said that I would need this amount to give a good 'finish' and things like tinted moisturiser would work. Any ideas?

god they put it on with a trowel don't they? Which brand was it?

I have quite porey skin but I find a bit of light foundation only where needed and a bit of powder to set it is ok.

brimfull · 03/03/2006 11:41

no 7 intelligent foundation is great for evening out skin tone.

also clinique do an "almost there makeup" that's a tinted cream, its great too.

I always think makeup ladies at counters put far too much on.Good for you for saying so though!

Somanykiddies · 03/03/2006 11:42

Think it was Revlon. Girl doing it had trowelled over her spots so it should have been a warning. She kept saying that if you have your eyes and lips 'done' but leave the rest of the face more natural when it wouldn't look right but to be honest I couldn't go out looking like that, I'd scare animals and small children!

God knows what they see when they look in the mirror. It's scary.Less is definately more.

Somanykiddies · 03/03/2006 11:46

Thing is it was rehearsal for my wedding (not now going ahead, but that's another story) and she convinced me that to get the flawless look for photos this is what you have to do. I felt so uncomfortable with it all though. Anyone else been told this, or is it just me with grotty skin!

I think it's better to feel relaxed about how you look on the day and get the photographer to magically get rid of the spots. They can do wonders with digital these days.

I did get one of those awful makeover/photshoot things done years ago (it was a gift). She trowelled the makeup on then ,my skin was quite clear aswell.I had so much mascara on I could hardly open my eyes lol.

Somanykiddies · 03/03/2006 11:55

It took me three make up wipes to get just the foundation off! Hughely high maintenance in my book!

what a nightmare.. i used to work for virgin vie and we would offer a free one to one consultation and were taught NOT to trowel it on.. maybe try them? www.virgincosmetics.com

biglips · 03/03/2006 11:59

i had that happened to me when i went in the Body shop looking for a summer look foundation but i wasnt sure which one.. suddenly i ended up on the chair and the beautican shows me how to put a summer look on my face.. after she finished i was horrified as my face was so shiny and yucky!! and makeup was vile colour!!!

alliebaba · 03/03/2006 12:01

body shop made me look like a ghost..

schneebly · 03/03/2006 12:02

what about using one of those make up 'primers' to even out your skin before applying a small coat of foundation? I hear there are ones that fill out pores and lines etc but wont look as heavy as caked foundation. Will try to find a product.

Somanykiddies · 03/03/2006 12:04

Schneebly, not heard of those before. Any info would be much appreciated.

Somanykiddies · 03/03/2006 12:07

Anniemac, great advice thank you. How do you choose the colour though? Can you tell I'm bit of a make up novice!

schneebly, that looks fantastic thank you. Will have to venture into the big city to get it though so in the meantime might see if our little Boots has the L'oreal tinted moisturiser.

Also meant to say that she did a great job with my eyebrows, they are quite sparse but she made them look 'full' but I think she did it with eyeshadow, is this possible, if so, how?

schneebly · 03/03/2006 12:16

glad to help - should sort out my own 'slapped arse' face though! Grin

Somanykiddies · 03/03/2006 12:16

if you are going on a shopping expedition, I would go to a posher counter, maybe MAC or Bobbi Brown, and see if they can do a better job. You don't have to buy anything - just say you'll come back when you've decided what to get or whatever.

eyebrows can be filled in a bit with shadow, but you get better, more precise results with eyebrow pencils IME.

MrsBadger · 03/03/2006 12:24

I have sparse eyebrows too and normally I love them as it saves plucking, but I do fill them out if I'm ever wearing full makeup.
I use a fine brush (think it's really a lip brush), wet it, then wipe it across a brown eyeshadow block and use kind of light feathery strokes. Less harsh than a pencil and means it builds up gradually so you never get a crayon-like line.

Or Quick Brows (or Speed Brows or something) from BeneFit is v good - lightly tinted gel stuff that fills in and shapes. Pricey though.
